I'm new to following Ella Baker Center, and I'm inspired by the excellence, commitment, and reach, of this organization.

Our latest business initiative in Kenya is Beehives. We have started two apiaries with 25 hives each in two separate villages. The beehives are a long term investment that we expect to pay big dividends in self reliance for these communities. A purchase of 25 Beehives is about a $4000 investment. Gabriel, Caroline and Emmanuel, 3 of our students live with their widowed mother, Meleon, in this mud hut that has reached the point of collapse. Funding of $500 has been provided. We need to raise an additional $500-$1000 to build a new home with solar lighting and a water tank to store rain water off the roof. This will provide a clean, dry and safe environment with adequate lighting to do studies. It gets dark at 6:00 pm in Kenya year round.  The water tank will eliminate long treks to fetch water for cooking and drinking.

Projects range from raising chickens for eggs, meat and market, goats and cows for milk, meat or market. We establish gardens in communities for the production of food for consumption and market.

*Clean, safe, dry and adequate living accommodations are essential for families to thrive. We provide solar power for homes where electricity is not available. Students achieve better results in school when basic home lighting is available in the evening hours so they can study and read. 

Money raised through fund raisers and direct individual donations go directly to No End to Love’s humanitarian and charitable purposes. Administration costs are self funded and supplemented with 5% from proceeds from our Savers Clothing Drives. We have no staff or rent to pay but there are always some expenses involved when running an organization.

FWI reduces the suffering of farmed fish by researching and executing evidence-based interventions in high-priority contexts.

The mission of Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI) is to reduce the suffering of farmed fish as much as possible. We do that specifically by researching and testing evidence-based welfare interventions, and then implementing them in high priority contexts. Our main implementation program right now focuses on collaborative farmer outreach in India to improve water quality and reduce stocking densities. The Founders Pledge Climate Fund exists to leverage each dollar and fund the most effective, neglected climate solutions.

Climate change is an incredibly complex problem borne out of how we produce and consume energy; it's intertwined with challenges of economic development, energy poverty, and emissions-fueled air pollution. It is an environmental and humanitarian crisis we must urgently address.

We aim to take a holistic approach that recognizes the global nature of this challenge and the fact that, despite its urgency, we are still in the early days of climate action. We address the worst-case scenarios of climate damage, and look for solutions that can reduce current carbon emissions and accelerate the transition to clean energy to meet global demand, especially in developing countries. Through the Fund, we:

- Accelerate innovation in neglected technologies
- Catalytically grow the most effective climate organizations
- Promote policy leadership and paradigm shaping

### Our Approach to Grantmaking
When evaluating potential grants, we consider several key points:

- **Counterfactual impact.** Our grants are designed to create a meaningful outcome that would not otherwise have happened. This means that you can rely on the Funds to create meaningful, real change, rather than just maintaining the status quo.
- **Impact-driven philanthropy.** This fund prioritizes the highest-impact solutions to challenges. We assess where the gaps are, which opportunities may be neglected by other funders, and where the biggest wins are in terms of making the biggest difference.
- **The organization’s funding gap.** Not all organizations are set up to scale up their programming and many can’t productively absorb large amounts of unsolicited funding. We evaluate all potential grantees’ capacity for growth and consider how much money they could put to good use.
- **Organizational strength.** Particularly with unrestricted funding, it’s important to have trust in the leadership and capacity of the organizations we support. We look at their track record of success and their transparency about failures as well as successes, and we only support those organizations which are exceptionally well run.
- **Time-critical opportunities and funding certainty.** While Founders Pledge members give to our top climate charities regularly, sometimes there are time-critical opportunities which require fast decisions. We will use the Fund to make grants that enable such short-term opportunities and stability for high-impact funding opportunities thereby increasing the impact compared to individual giving to specific organizations.
- **Portfolio approach.** Because most climate damage comes from particular severe outcomes – with a world of 4 degrees of warming being much worse than twice as bad as a world with 2 degrees – and because every particular strategy – such as energy innovation – might underdeliver, we pursue a portfolio approach to maximize positive impact. This means we will diversify our bets in ways that, when one approach fails (such as energy innovation), the others we promote (such as carbon removal) can be expected to be particularly important and still available.

### Frequently-Asked Questions

**Can charities apply for money from the Fund?**
The Funds do not generally accept applications from charities, and we request that charities do not send unsolicited applications for funding. If the Fund Managers choose to open up an application round, this will be publicized.

**How frequently will you make grants from the Fund?**
In general, Fund Managers will review grantmaking decisions on a quarterly basis. Decisions will be made based on the value of Funds and the available options for high-impact grantmaking. We may disburse funds outside of quarterly review dates if we become aware of a particularly promising and time-sensitive funding.

**How will my contribution be used?**
All funds are granted out. The Fund is not an investment vehicle. The Fund does not use any percentage of contributions to cover staff time or other overhead costs. Every dollar contributed to the Fund will be used to make grants directly to end-user organizations creating a real difference.

EBC builds power with systems-impacted people to drive systems-change. Over its 27-year history, the families and communities EBC organizes with have collectively transformed the criminal justice system in California, from closing  abusive youth prisons to passing first-of-its-kind legislation to challenge racial discrimination in trials and sentencing. Building on the organizing approach of civil rights leader Ella Baker, EBC invests in the leadership of the people most impacted by racial oppression. EBC is led by systems-impacted people and implements solutions created from lived expertise. Recent California victories like the Racial Justice Act for All, the RISE Act, and the Access to Programming Act were pioneered at EBC and are poised to bring thousands home to their families. EBC also invests in leadership in its core base. For example, currently incarcerated people are most impacted – but least included – in policies for decarceration. Through EBC’s 9,000+ inside member network, currently incarcerated people weigh in on policy solutions, organize with their peers, speak out on issues impacting their lives, and get support to advocate for their freedom. Locally, in the Bay Area, EBC builds credible alternatives to prisons. Restore Oakland, EBC’s community center, models investments that return opportunity to over-criminalized neighborhoods. Here, EBC and partners offer resources like restorative justice circles, re-entry support, tenants rights tools, job training, and entrepreneurship funding that build a vibrant, prosperous community. ProPublica is an independent, non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest. Investigative journalism is at risk. Many news organizations have increasingly come to see it as a luxury. Providing low-income uninsured neighbors with free medical, dental, and mental health care as an expression of Jesus Christ's love

34,000 low-income uninsured neighbors in Idaho's Treasure Valley can't afford healthcare. 

Genesis Community Health is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit clinic providing them with free medical dental and mental health care as an expression of the love of Jesus Christ.

We are a grassroots organization supported by over 200 active volunteers as well as donors, businesses, churches, and foundations throughout the Treasure Valley.

SACS is a centre of teaching, cultural and sporting excellence that promotes critical thinking and social responsibility.  

To promote excellence within an all-round education, to prepare boys to play a constructive role as compassionate, thinking individuals in society. 
 
SACS is the oldest high school in South Africa, founded in September 1829. It is arguably the most magnificent setting at the foot of Table Mountain and Devils peak. The school prides itself on the balanced education it provides, the world-class facilities on offer, the fact that SACS men strive for excellence in all spheres of school life and that it places a strong emphasis on high moral values. 

Far from resting contentedly on its 186 year-old record of growth and excellence, SACS in the 1980s and early 90s, led the Open Schools' Movement, making it possible, without the formal sanction of the Nationalist Government, for the integration of South African schools. Boys 'of colour,' Muslim and Christian, had been enrolled at SACS throughout the 19th century but, segregated for 85 odd years by the Cape School Board's Act of 1905 and the subsequent blight of apartheid, the school had the unusual satisfaction of  re-opening  its doors in 1992 to boys of all races. One of only four schools world-wide privileged enough to possess its own Rhodes Scholarship, SACS has attracted to itself pupils possessing the calibre, academically, culturally and in the sporting sphere to qualify for consideration for this, 'our greatest prize.'

Pasadena Humane is more than an animal shelter; we are a community-supported animal resource center providing compassion and care for all animals. Since 1903, Pasadena Humane has offered lifesaving programs and services for animals and the people who love them in the Greater Los Angeles Area. At our Pasadena campus, we provide shelter, dedicated care and new beginnings for thousands of our community’s most vulnerable animals every year. In addition to pet adoptions and foster, we focus on programs and services aimed at helping people care for and keep their pets, such as free and low-cost spay/neuter and vaccines, a pet food pantry, and an animal support call center. In 2022, Pasadena Humane helped nearly 40,000 animals through adoptions, wildlife rehabilitation, lost & found, veterinary services, and surrender prevention assistance.

Since 1996, Amazon Watch has defended the Amazon rainforest and our climate in solidarity with Indigenous peoples. Long-term, trusted partnerships with Indigenous peoples — the best stewards of the rainforest — are the foundation for Amazon Watch’s campaigns for climate justice, corporate accountability, and the permanent protection of the rainforest.

The Amazon is home to more than 511 distinct Indigenous peoples. As our planet’s largest tropical rainforest, it stabilizes our global climate and an immense amount of Earth’s biodiversity and flowing freshwater can be found there. This vital ecosystem and the Indigenous peoples who have stewarded it for centuries face grave threats from deforestation, resource extraction, land grabs, and destructive development projects. The Amazon is facing a tipping point and won't be able to sustain itself as a rainforest if we remain on our current path of destruction.

To move to a turning point, Amazon Watch is carrying out campaigns in partnership with Indigenous peoples to secure Indigenous rights to ancestral territories, halt oil drilling and mining in the biome, and mobilize solidarity funds directly to Amazonian peoples at their request. Their work combines on-the-ground legal, advocacy, and communications expertise and long-term trusted partnerships with Indigenous peoples and organizations.

The Good Food Institute (GFI) is a global network of nonprofit organizations developing the roadmap for a sustainable, secure, and just protein supply. Industry alone will not meet this challenge at the scale or speed we need. GFI is accelerating the transformation of the food system by identifying solutions and mobilizing resources to make alternative proteins the default way meat is made.

GFI is a network of nonprofits around the world strategically based in the most critical economies for alternative protein advancement. For more than 65 years, ITBA - Instituto Tecnólogico de Buenos Aires  has contributed to solving the challenges of humanity through a university education recognized for its excellence, the production of scientific knowledge and international collaboration, and outstanding levels of excellence among its graduates.

Thanks to the financial contribution of companies and individuals, scholarships are obtained so that young people  with talent, passion and determination, can study at ITBA.

Delivering unconditional cash directly to the world's poorest households via secure mobile transfers. 

Since 2009, GiveDirectly has delivered more than $580 million in unconditional cash transfers to families in need. These one-time cash transfers allow recipients to invest in what they need most and have been shown to improve their earnings, children’s school attendance, health, nutrition, and mental well-being.
 
GiveDirectly uses government data to target villages where most or all residents are living in extreme poverty, defined by the World Bank as earning under $2.15/day. In-country GiveDirectly staff enroll one member of each household in the entire village to receive a one-time transfer of about $1,000 USD sent in two installments using mobile money. Recipients can then withdraw the mobile funds as cash with local agents and use the funds to invest in what they need – whether it’s on starting a business, education, making their home safer/sturdier, healthcare, or livestock.
 
GiveDirectly uses rigorous experimental research (randomized controlled trials) to measure the impact of their unconditional cash programs and answer public policy questions, generating evidence on key design and implementation questions across varied contexts. PEN is enabling every African child to learn by doing. 

In the Upper East Region of Ghana, there was a young boy named Issifu, living in a humble home – his dad was a mechanic and his mom sold goods in the market. 

As he went through elementary school, one of his least favorite subjects was math. One year, his grade in that class was 20%. He dreamed of being a doctor, but with grades like that, it wasn't going to happen. Then in his last year of junior high school, he had a math teacher who used a very different approach in class - he used activities, he made it interesting....even fun! That point marked a 180 degree turn in Issifu's life. He began loving the subject, excelling in it, reaching the top of his class across all the subjects, and today he is studying computer engineering at one of the best universities in Ghana.

Providing medical and psychological care for Bali's most vulnerable

The island of Bali, home to four and a half million people, is one of the world's most desired destinations. With its remarkable spiritual energy, generous hospitality, tropical gardens, swaying palms, balmy weather, white sandy beaches, and premier accommodations, Bali has become a favored international destination. This is the Bali that is known and loved.


However, Bali has a somewhat hidden side. This is not the Bali you imagine. Often overlooked and not visible to tourists, many locals are desperately poor, in poor health, and in need of help.


Despite the provincial government doing what it can, the social system is overwhelmed, and as a result, locals must turn elsewhere to find a helping hand. Privately funded non-profits such as SoleFamily Bali are essential in addressing the growing social needs of the local population. Eleven years ago, Robert Epstone and Sarah Chapman formed their outreach program as a privately funded non-profit to address those growing needs.



Solefamily Bali is changing the lives in Bali through the provision of medical and psychological care for the most vulnerable individuals; the provision of basic dried food staples and fresh produce; the facilitation of care and advocacy for children and adults; and offering a safe haven in a comfortable recovery center.





Many of the villages that SoleFamily Bali serves are in the remote corners of the island. As such, their always-at-the-ready, rapid-response teams provide care and emergency medical attention to the sick, the poor, and the destitute. When treatments are unavailable in Bali, they provide crucial access for children to receive complex cardiac treatment in Jakarta. Furthermore, their ten-bedroom care and recovery center provides a safe and comfortable haven in which to heal.


In 2023, the foundation rebranded from Soleman Indonesia to SoleFamily Bali, a name that more accurately reflects their work. To date, they treat and assist more than 800 families on the island. This work includes treatment and vital support for Bali's most physically vulnerable and mentally impaired residents.

Women of Color Unite (WOCU) is a social action non-profit organization focusing on fair access, fair treatment and fair pay for women of color in all aspects of the entertainment and media industries.  This organization works towards these goals by creating self-sustaining long-term programs for:  Facilitating fair hiring practices; Fostering a more inclusive and diverse workplace environment; Promoting access for excluded content creators; Expanding audiences represented by those excluded content creators; Raise funds for WOCU to produce their own content; Hold events, seminars, workshops, panels and summits to get more women of color hired, fund their projects and distribute their content; Work with additional organizations to develop analytics of under-represented marginalized groups to better identify their needs; and, Help companies incubate talent and integrate them into their work force.

The Climate Solutions Accelerator’s mission is to build a healthier, more equitable, and environmentally sustainable community by catalyzing local efforts to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and address the impacts of climate change.

Given the urgency and complexity of climate change, the Accelerator firmly believes that everyone has a role to play in addressing climate change. The Accelerator’s constituents, therefore, include any person or organization in the nine-county Genesee-Finger Lakes Region who is willing to work toward solving climate change, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, and language. Furthermore, we are committed to centering equity in our work and prioritize climate solutions that accelerate emissions reductions while also addressing other key community concerns (e.g., health disparities, access to jobs, affordable housing). We are firmly committed to ensuring that ALL members of our community have opportunities to benefit from, and participate in, climate action at the local level. Building a powerfully diverse climate movement across the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region that bridges political, economic, geographic, and racial divides is therefore a critical goal of our work. 

One of the Accelerator’s primary roles in the community is to facilitate collaboration between entities that are working to address climate change and related concerns. By coordinating and aligning the efforts of many local organizations, the Accelerator increases the effectiveness and efficiency of our regional climate movement by bringing together cross-sector stakeholders to work toward equitable, intersectional climate solutions.

A Collective Impact Initiative brings together a wide and diverse group of stakeholders to tackle an urgent, yet complex problem (like climate change) that cannot be solved with a single solution or from within a single organization or sector, e.g., non-profit or government. The Accelerator has convened a steering committee for this initiative, made up of key decision-makers from a wide range of sectors, including government, business, health, housing, transportation, and agriculture. This steering committee is working with consultants from the Stockholm Environment Institute to develop a climate action plan for the nine-county Genesee Finger Lakes region, and a shared measurement system to assess progress toward achieving the plan’s goals. The Collective Impact steering committee and issue-based working groups will coordinate mutually reinforcing activities to reduce redundancies, break down silos, and maximize the efficient use of resources.

The Collective Impact process will allow our region to move quickly towards carbon neutrality, through coordinated, collaborative action to end our dependence on fossil fuels.​​These efforts to implement systems-level climate solutions will enhance the quality of life for our region’s residents in a variety of ways, such as improved public health, energy affordability, opportunities for green job development, sustainable transportation options, access to public greenspace, neighborhood stability/resilience, and home comfort.

Beyond the Accelerator’s primary collective impact initiative, other current programs include:

- Amped: a collaboration with nearly 20 prominent local institutions to promote beneficial electrification (the use of cleanly-generated electricity to meet energy needs) and encourage organizational leaders to electrify their buildings and vehicle fleets.

- Color Your Community Green: a volunteer-driven initiative that connects and organizes concerned individuals, by municipality or neighborhood, to form a network of climate-focused citizen action teams that (1) identify locally-relevant, high-impact climate solutions and develop implementation strategies using the CYCG “Toolkit,” and (2) advocate for environmental justice and equitable climate solutions to be implemented at the municipal level and in schools.

- HeatSmart Monroe: an initiative that educates, encourages, and incentivizes homeowners to transition from gas and oil heating systems to cleaner, greener heat pump heating and cooling systems.

- Connected Communities Resident Ambassador Program: outreach and education initiative in partnership with Connected Communities to help tenants, landlords and homeowners in the City of Rochester’s EMMA and Beechwood neighborhoods reduce their energy usage—and energy bills—by making weatherization improvements using NY State home energy efficiency grants.

Climate Solutions Accelerator

Our mission is to inspire and empower youth to take control of their academic success through peer tutoring and mentoring.

Peer Power Foundation is a youth development organization that seeks to close equity gaps that exist within the public education system. Since 2004, we have created opportunities for Memphis students to grow into productive adults who contribute to the city and nation in accordance with their passion. 

Peer Power recruits, hires, trains and deploys college-aged students into high school classrooms to decrease the student to teacher ratio and meet the individualized needs of students. We also hire and train 11th and 12th grade students to tutor students in lower grades, helping to close literacy gaps during crucial academic development stages. In addition, Peer Power partners with external organizations to train tutors within for their programming needs. 

In 2015, Peer Power Foundation created the “Memphis Model” in partnership with Memphis- Shelby County Schools (MSCS) and University of Memphis. The program employs more than 150 University of Memphis tutors called “Success Coaches” who are trained and placed within high school classrooms. This unique configuration reduces the student-to-adult ratio from about 30-to-1 down to roughly 10-to-1. Success Coaches are paid, earn college credit, gain professional experience and help MSCS students, while classroom teachers experience higher job satisfaction and retention.

TUTOR + MENTOR = SUCCESS COACH
Success Coaches are trained in subject content knowledge as well as social emotional learning. They are equipped to hone in on the holistic needs of scholars. 

Students with a Success Coach in their class are 3X more likely to show up for school.

Students who participate in ACT Prep University are 1.9X more likely to improve their score.

Students who participate in ACT Prep University are 1.5X more likely to obtain an academic scholarship. 

Students who participate in Peer Power’s ACT Prep University see their composite scores increase by 3.4 points on average and have earned and qualified for more than $3 Million in TN Hope Lottery Scholarships.

We also hire and train 11th and 12th grade students to tutor students in lower grades, helping to close literacy gaps during crucial academic development stages.

More than tutoring. Peer Power specializes in developing creative programs that link school aged students with college students who serve as mentors, tutors and role models for them. Our flexible peer-to-peer model allows us to meet needs and serve students in unorthodox but proven ways.
