About Solidlinks Initiative for Development
Solidlinks Initiative for Development is a female-led, community-based organization rooted in the heart of Kasese District, Western Uganda. Our mission is to empower women and girls to lead dignified, productive, and resilient lives by addressing the structural barriers that limit their potential. Established on the foundational belief that true development must be inclusive, participatory, and community-driven, Solidlinks works to create sustainable pathways out of poverty for women and girls, particularly in under-served rural communities.
At Solidlinks, we believe in the power of women and girls to be the agents of transformation in their households, communities, and beyond. We understand that empowering women and girls is not just about addressing immediate needs. It is about tackling the systemic issues of inequality, dis-empowerment, and exclusion that perpetuate poverty and vulnerability across generations. Our work focuses on four core thematic areas: livelihoods and food security, education and life skills, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and climate resilience and environmental sustainability. These areas are interlinked, and we take a holistic, rights-based approach to ensure that every woman and girl we serve has access to the resources, knowledge, and support she needs to thrive.
Our Approach
Solidlinks applies a community-driven, gender-responsive, and integrated development model. We work closely with community members, local authorities, and development partners to ensure our programs respond to actual needs on the ground and are culturally relevant, inclusive, and sustainable. We are proud of our strong local roots, our committed team of female leaders and field staff, and our growing network of trained community volunteers who help deliver services and monitor impact.
We aim not only to meet the immediate needs of vulnerable populations but to build resilience, agency, and self-reliance among the people we serve. In all our interventions, we promote inclusive participation, particularly of women, youth, and marginalized groups, in decision-making processes that affect their lives.
What We Do
- Empowering women through livelihoods and food security.
In our communities, the majority of women depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. However, they often lack access to land, quality inputs, training, and markets. This always hinder their productivity and keep them in poverty. At Solidlinks, we address this gap by equipping women with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to become entrepreneurial farmers and income earners. Our flagship program on climate-smart agriculture empowers women with training in sustainable farming practices, provision of drought-resistant seeds, soil conservation techniques, water harvesting, and post-harvest handling. We support women to increase food crop production, diversify incomes, and access local and regional markets.
We also promote agribusiness and support women to engage in small-scale trade and micro-enterprises. Through mentorship, group savings and loans associations (VSLAs), and financial literacy training, we help women build financial independence, invest in their families, and become leaders in local economies.
- Promoting Girls’ Education and Life Skills
We believe that every girl deserves a chance to learn, grow, and realize her full potential. Yet in our communities, girls often face barriers to education such as poverty, child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and cultural practices that devalue their education. Our programs focus on keeping girls in school, improving learning outcomes, and building their confidence and life skills. We provide school materials, sanitary pads, and mentorship to adolescent girls to reduce school absenteeism and dropout rates. We also work with parents, teachers, and community leaders to change negative attitudes and social norms that limit girls’ education.
For out-of-school youth, we run vocational training and apprenticeship programs that equip them with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship, with a special focus on girls and young mothers who need a second chance at life and livelihood.
- Improving Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)
Solidlinks emerged in part due to the alarming impact of the COVID-19 lock-down on adolescent girls, marked by rising cases of teenage pregnancies, increased sexual violence, and limited access to sexual and reproductive health services.
We respond by offering comprehensive SRHR education and services tailored to the needs of young people, especially girls and young women. Our interventions include:
• Providing accurate information on contraception, menstrual health, pregnancy prevention, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
• Facilitating access to SRH services including pregnancy testing, HIV testing and counseling, and referrals to health facilities.
• Offering psycho-social support and counseling for survivors of gender-based violence.
• Organizing community dialogues and school outreaches to promote open discussion, reduce stigma, and improve service uptake.
Our SRHR work is anchored in rights-based and youth-friendly approaches, ensuring young people can make informed choices about their bodies, health, and futures.
- Building Climate Resilience and Sustainable Communities
We integrate climate resilience into all our programs, particularly agriculture, livelihoods, and water resource management. This is because climate change disproportionately affects women and girls, especially in rural areas where agriculture and natural resources are their main sources of livelihood. Through our Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) initiatives, we build the capacity of smallholder farmers, especially women to adapt to changing weather patterns, manage climate risks, and reduce environmental degradation. We support tree planting, promote agro-ecological practices, and educate communities about climate justice and sustainability.
Our approach to climate resilience goes beyond agriculture. We advocate for environmental conservation, clean energy use, and disaster preparedness at the community level. Our goal is to ensure that women and girls are not only protected from climate risks, but are active leaders in creating climate solutions.
- Advocacy, Community Engagement, and Systems Strengthening
We believe in the power of community voice and collective action. We conduct targeted advocacy to challenge harmful norms, push for better policies, and hold duty bearers accountable. Our advocacy focuses on:
• Gender equality and women’s rights
• Access to education and SRHR services
• Ending gender-based violence
• Youth inclusion in decision-making
• Climate justice and environmental protection
We empower young people especially girls to become advocates and change-makers in their own communities. Through peer mentorship, training, and support, we amplify their voices and build their leadership. We also collaborate with sub-county and parish structures to strengthen local systems for service delivery, working in alignment with government priorities in education, health, agriculture, and social development.
Our Vision
A world where women and girls live in dignity, with capacity to overcome poverty and influence decisions affecting them.
Our Mission
To inspire and empower women, girls, and young people to acquire skills, knowledge, and opportunities needed to unlock their full potential while nurturing a dignified and inclusive society where they can thrive and lead.
Our 3-Year Focus Statement (2025–2028)
Over the next three years, Solidlinks Initiative for Development will focus on deepening our impact in empowering women and girls through expanded access to climate-resilient livelihoods, education, sexual and reproductive health services, and leadership opportunities. We will prioritize scaling our proven community-driven approaches to reach more under-served households, strengthen local systems, and influence policy for gender equality and sustainable development.
Our desired impact by 2028 includes:
• Empowering 5,000 women with knowledge, tools, and resources to increase income, food security, and climate resilience.
• Keeping 2,000 girls in school through mentorship, life skills education, and protection from early marriage and pregnancy.
• Expanding access to SRHR services to reach at least 7,500 adolescents and youth, equipping them with accurate information, agency, and safe choices.
• Strengthening community leadership, with at least 500 women and youth taking active roles in advocacy, local governance, and development processes.
• Building climate-smart and economically resilient communities, where women and girls lead in transforming household well-being, environmental protection, and inter-generational progress.
Through strategic partnerships and community ownership, Solidlinks will continue to drive grassroots change, unlock potential, and shape a future where every woman and girl thrives with dignity and purpose.
