Why LilyPads Was Started

Our founder's family has spent much time at UVA Children’s Hospital (and Boston Children's Hospital) when their daughter, Lily, was little and fighting for her life. That’s where the seed for LilyPads was planted.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971.

In over 70 countries around the world, MSF saves lives by providing medical aid where it is needed most—in armed conflicts, epidemics, natural disasters, and other crises.  The people who work for MSF are doctors, nurses, midwives, epidemiologists, water-and-sanitation experts and many others who combine their professional expertise with a commitment to the world’s most vulnerable people.  Each year, these medical teams run close to 470 projects where they care for millions of people.  

As an organization, MSF is neutral and operates independently of any political, military, or religious agendas. It does not take sides in armed conflicts, provides care based on needs alone, and advocates for increased independent access to victims of conflict and disaster as required under international humanitarian law. Medical teams conduct evaluations on the ground to determine a population's medical needs before opening programs, aiming to fill gaps that exist (rather than replicating services that are already offered) or reach communities that are not being assisted.  Over the years, the organization has been the recipient of several awards that recognize its work, including the 1998 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize, the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize, the 2012 J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding, the 2015 Lasker-Bloomberg Public Service Award, and the 2017 Pardes Humanitarian Prize for Mental Health.

-  **The organization’s funding gap**. Not all organizations are set up to scale programs and some may not be able to productively absorb large amounts of unsolicited funding at any given point. -  **Organizational strength**. Particularly with unrestricted funding, it’s important to have trust in the leadership and capacity of the organizations we support. Since our founding in 1986, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) has been the leading organization building the movement to foster evidence-based approaches to psychedelics and the people who use them. When used safely and responsibly, psychedelics have the potential to promote personal growth and well-being and treat various mental health conditions. The cultivation, use, and trade of psychoactive substances — including psychedelics — has been a consistent aspect of human history, but prohibition, criminalization, and militarization — and their inherent oppression — have led to drastic consequences. The ongoing, global War on Drugs has been justified by bad science, racism, and fear for too long: it has led to mass incarceration; erosion of civil liberties; ecological damage; economic waste; and the public health polycrisis of adulteration, poisoning, and overdose. Many of these harmful effects have disproportionately impacted the most historically exploited and oppressed communities. Consequently, we believe societies worldwide have an obligation to account for and repair those harms, to the extent possible.

We are a community-based, non-profit organization that serves the homeless and at-risk populations of the Mid-Peninsula. We establish environments and build relationships where community volunteers can provide food and clothing, as well as referrals for shelter, addiction recovery, and other personal support.

Street Life Ministries (or SLM) began in 2001 at the downtown Menlo Park train station. Today, due to the help of many people, it now serves over 35,000 meals a year, five nights a week, in Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Redwood City. For 20 years SLM gatherings have built a reputation as the one consistent place the homeless can count on. Whether it is a holiday, a cloudy or rainy day, SLM never varies from the set schedule, giving the homeless a stable option throughout the year.

SLM is an established 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a board of directors, and is very different from many “feeding ministries.” It serves a unique role in the way it cares for the homeless and the hungry in San Mateo/Santa Clara Counties. Hot, home cooked meals served in outdoor venues are less threatening for our homeless neighbors, fostering a safe environment for relational connections to develop with the SLM leaders and volunteers. These connections build trust for guiding homeless friends toward healthier decisions, medical assistance, detox, rehab, housing, mentorship and counseling. In addition to food and encouragement, SLM provides clothing, toiletry kits, sleeping bags, medical supplies, temporary shelter, recovery services and job assistance to those in need. 

SLM is also unique because it places its staff and its services “in the streets”, and “in the camps”, where the homeless live. It reaches more homeless people directly in those street locations than traditional professional service agencies. Additionally, no other homeless non-profit in the area provides local residents with the large number (over 6000 hours per year, estimated) of volunteer hours of opportunity to meet directly and be served on a face to face basis as we do. Homeless folks need love, care, trustworthy friends, and reliable, regular support to improve and/or recover. SLM is “in the trenches and on the street” every day, helping our homeless neighbors. SLM’s outreach can be accessed at all hours of the day and night.

Resilience1220 empowers young people to build resilience, strength, and the tools to master life's challenges.

Resilience1220 provides free counseling services to youth ages 12-20 in the mountain communities west of Denver. Through individual counseling, support groups and community outreach, we work to raise awareness of the social, emotional, and mental-health issues young adults face, and to provide the necessary life skills to create wellness and resiliency in their lives.

Four years ago, our mountain communities faced the reality of three teen suicides. We were made painfully aware of the mental health issues that young people face and the lack of life saving resources accessible to them. Resilience1220 was founded by a group of local therapists and community members. They worked tirelessly to break down barriers to neighborhood mental health resources and the social stigmas around seeking care. We provide confidential counseling services to youth ages 12 to 20 years old at no cost. Our service area includes Evergreen, Conifer, Bailey, Clear Creek, Gilpin, and Park counties.

Counseling sessions with Resilience1220 teach stress-reduction techniques, tools to ask for and provide help, validation, a place to sort through belief systems, and a non-judgmental place to share their feelings.

Resilience1220 fosters an environment of mutual respect in which our staff, clients, and volunteers can feel valued. We seek to serve all members of our community, without regard to gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, age, sexual orientation or identity, abilities, political affiliation, or education. We are open to all and see diversity as a source of strength.

StrongMinds provides life-changing mental health services to women in Africa using innovative community-based group therapy.

According to the WHO, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and is a major contributor to the global burden of disease. In Africa, an estimated 66M women have depression and 85% have no access to treatment. Since 2014, StrongMinds has treated over 200,000 individuals for depression symptoms, with 80% measuring as depression-free after therapy. When a woman recovers from depression, she is more engaged in the community and her economic activity increases. Her family eats more meals and her children go to school more often. When you invest in mental health, you invest in the future of an individual, their family, and their community.

The organizations we have chosen to support with this campaign are doing the work that BUB believes in: Sycamore Land Trust for land preservation, Power of Zero to prevent bullying in schools and online, Milo's Sanctuary for the care of homeless pets with special needs, and our own Lil BUB's Big FUND, whose mission is to bring these causes together.

Lil BUB's Better World Fundraiser

Closegap is a 501(c)(3) non-profit technology company on a mission to improve the emotional and mental health of K-12 students.

Closegap is a nonprofit tech startup that’s created a free daily mental health check-in for K-12 students. Each day, students complete a developmentally appropriate and interactive check-in, which asks a series of questions about their emotions, energy level, physical needs and more. Students then have the option to request to speak with a trusted adult or choose from a library of self-guided, social-emotional learning activities on the digital platform. School staff receive alerts, a daily triaged list of their students, and data visualizations to spot trends over time. Founded on the idea that every kid needs at least one trusted adult and self-regulation skills to navigate tough circumstances, we’re working to transform the way kids are cared for and supported within schools. 

THE PROBLEM 
Closegap is addressing the youth mental health crisis, and schools’ inability to meet student mental and emotional health needs. Youth anxiety, depression and suicide have been on the rise for the past decade. In 2019, one in three high school students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, an increase of 40% from 2009. The pandemic exacerbated the crisis. In 2020, there was a 30% increase in emergency room visits for mental health reasons for youth ages 12-17. Today, suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds. 

Schools are on the frontlines of this crisis, and represent an enormous opportunity to strengthen our mental health safety net—most students (and BIPOC students, disproportionately) receive mental health services at schools. Yet, schools are often understaffed and under-resourced. When something is wrong, we don’t have mechanisms in place to catch it. Nationally, there are over 415 students for every 1 school counselor, almost double the recommended ratio. School staff are largely unequipped to monitor the needs of all their students or intervene in real time; it’s unrealistic that they can check-in with each student, and implicit bias can cloud judgment. Additionally, not all students feel comfortable asking for help. For this reason, many students slip through the cracks. Schools desperately need a way to gauge the mental health needs of their students both in real-time (for immediate individual support) and over time (for systemic support) to adequately address the youth mental health crisis. 

THE SOLUTION 
Closegap equips schools with the technology and data to more effectively support the mental health of K-12 students. 

The check-in is developmentally appropriate and backed by research from mental health experts and leading institutions, enabling schools to ask the right questions early and often. It first asks students about their feelings, needs, and challenges. Then the more foundational questions. Are they eating enough? Sleeping well? Is everything okay in their peer group? At the end, students are given the opportunity to privately ask for help from an adult or choose from a library of self-guided, evidence-based social-emotional learning activities, such as box breathing, shaking out parts of their body and making a gratitude list. Students learn to label, understand and regulate their emotions, and are provided with a new, direct line to school staff to express their emotional needs; this is particularly important for students who may not feel comfortable walking to the counselor’s office.

Check-in data enables school staff to monitor and intervene on student needs in real time and at scale; they receive alerts, a daily triaged list of students, and data visualizations to spot trends over time.  Schools move from a disjointed, reactive approach when serious crises occur to a proactive approach to care. 


IMPACT
Schools using Closegap have prevented suicides and uncovered cases of self-harm, sexual assault, bullying and trouble at home that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. The check-in leverages technology to bolster the current support system in schools—meeting kids right where they are, fostering more genuine connection between school staff and students, and increasing empathy and understanding. We’ve served over 200,000 students across all 50 states, with over 5.8 million check-ins completed to date.

Our mission is to lower the suicide rate and prevent homelessness in the veteran population.  

Formerly known as Operation Combat Bikesaver. Our flagship program is what we call "Hotrod Therapy," which teaches veterans the skills and techniques to rebuild an old beat up motorcycle and create the bike of their dreams.  Through this distractive therapy veterans also get to work through their problems and end up "rebuilding" themselves as well.  We have seen some great men and women go through incredible changes in this program.  The veteran then gets to keep their project at no cost, and they usually end up sticking around to help mentor the next veteran through the process.  
While we are most known for our Hotrod Therapy program, we offer a variety of programs to improve the lives of veterans that served their country.  The "On Your Feet" program helps veterans going through hard times.  Our weekly veteran peer support group "Lima Charlie" meets every Thursday and gives veterans a safe space to workshop their problems with like-minded individuals who have been through similar experiences.  Our F.A.T. Program, or "Fitness and Tranquility" helps veterans to live a healthy, active, and peaceful lifestyle, which can be an adjustment to some.  Just to name a few.
100% of your donation goes to helping veterans, whether that be a part for their motorcycle build, getting them a safe ride to work in the morning, or enabling them to make positive impact in their community.  
We do not believe in just "raising awareness."  People are definitely aware.  We are making a positive impact.

The Rosalynn Carter Institute For Caregivers drives transformative systems change to improve the strength, health, and resilience of family caregivers. People of all identities provide care to their family members, **but the experience falls disproportionately on women and girls**, with serious effects on their mental, physical, and economic health.

- 3 out of 5 caregivers in the US are women, and a significant number are women over 50.
- Caregiving disproportionately impacts women’s health. Female caregivers report higher levels of stress at every age, and also report that their health is negatively impacted. 
- More than half of all women caregivers in the US feel they did not have a choice in taking on their role.

Nonprofit organization dedicated to inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the Muslim community of Houston

Dar-us-Sakina is a safe space for people of all abilities and their caregivers.  We inspire the community to abandon stigmas and embrace individuals with disabilities with empathy and respect.  Together, we are better!

We are dedicated to providing inclusive opportunities for individuals with disabilities, while empowering the affected and their caregivers with social support and access to local resources.  We envision a Muslim community where individuals with disabilities are fully accepted and included, and both they and their caregivers have adequate access to support.

Dar-us-Sakina offers its services to all special needs individuals and their caregivers within the Houston community, but reserves its Zakat fund for Muslim families who are in financial need or crisis. Our mission is achieved through three key service areas: Education, Support, and Community Awareness.

Education:

Special Needs Weekend Islamic School Programs: At four locations across Houston, children with special needs come weekly to the masjid to learn about their faith using an adapted curriculum and to be included in the community.

Teen Adult Program (TAP): This program helps individuals with special needs take the first step to adulthood by teaching them independent life skills in a supportive social environment.

Support:

Caregiver Support Groups: This allows mothers, fathers, and siblings of individuals with special needs to connect with others with similar life circumstances.

Events: From inclusive family events that make all accommodations to caregiver training events, Dar-us-Sakina engages the local special needs population on a monthly basis.

Zakat Services: For special needs families in crisis, we are committed to providing comprehensive support through our Zakat Fund, including funding of emergency respite care, counseling, necessary evaluations, advocacy and durable medical equipment.

Community Awareness:

Youth Inclusion Training: We visit local Islamic schools, masaajid, and Scouts to train typical youth on accepting and including their brothers and sisters with disabilities.

Community Education: We conduct awareness events and workshops to educate the general community on disability awareness and early childhood intervention.

Sakina Internship: This is a one year commitment for college age students who dedicate one day of the week serving individuals with special needs while learning about related topics.

Volunteer Enrichment Program: This is a volunteer buddy program for High School students.

As youth continue with YTB they experience co-production -- a model in which each person contributes to the design and delivery of projects or services.

YTB is a system of service exchange that leverages the talents, capabilities, and energies of youth so that they are viewed as partners and co-producers to achieve shared goals and work towards shared visions in our communities.

YTB is Timebanking customized for youth, a program of giving and receiving where youth earn YTB time credits for their service contributions. YTB time credits earn youth resources-services-opportunities, such as cell phone minutes, refurbished technology, sports gear, school supplies, arts-crafts supplies, books, coaching sessions, digital inclusion, lessons, etc. YTB is a youth-adult partnership in which youth develop strengths, make community connections, and experience something bigger than themselves. Marshall ROC -  Restoring Our Community  is a coalition of community organizations, funders, and government agencies bound together by the common interest: Helping our neighbors, particularly those who are most in need, recover from the Devastating Marshall Fire & Windstorms which destroyed over 1000K homes.  

Marshall ROC is led by its members, who are a dedicated community of volunteers and organizations, in collaboration with government representatives. Many organizations in the surrounding communities offered their help after the Marshall Fire. Coordinating these efforts is challenging, but important. Marshall ROC is structured as a Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG), which is a nationally recognized, tried-and-true method for coordinating limited money, muscle, and materials among multiple organizations, on behalf of individuals and communities impacted by disaster. The Marshall ROC Mission is to support and empower individuals and households affected by the Marshall Fire and windstorm to lead their own recoveries by identifying needs and coordinating assistance on their behalf

The Marshall ROC Mission – Restoring Our Community
The mission of Marshall ROC is to support and empower individuals and households affected by the Marshall Fire and windstorm to lead their own recoveries by identifying needs and coordinating assistance on their behalf. Marshall ROC is a collaborative coalition of existing agencies and all Marshall ROC related services will be provided without regard to race, creed, color, gender, disability, religious or political affiliation, documentation status, or sexual orientation. 

Disasters are, by their nature, overwhelming. If it wasn’t overwhelming, we’d call it an “inconvenience,” not a “disaster.” The Marshall Fire and Windstorm is overwhelming. Our neighbors lost hundreds of millions of dollars worth of property and belongings. So many individuals and organizations have rallied to help and it is inspiring to see how engaged and supportive the communities responding to this disaster have been. However, it is now clear the need is greater than the available resources. Marshall ROC and its members will work to help as many people as possible, while managing community expectations.
One of the most important efforts of Marshall ROC is the launch and opening of the Marshall Fire Recovery Center, which is a centralized Louisville, CO location dedicated to expediting the access and delivery of disaster related support, services and resources to fire survivors in Superior, Louisville and Unincorporated Boulder County as they navigate the complexity of their recovery. The Marshall Fire Recovery Center will house the Marshall ROC office and provide spaces for mental health, rebuilding and technical programs, and the network of professionals who are all helping to support the impacted community as well as to facilitate coordination and collaboration among local, national and governmental organizations. The Navigating Disaster for Boulder County program, operated by Lutheran Family Services – Rocky Mountains, will also be located at the Center. 
The Marshall ROC Marshall Fire Recovery Center is a testament to the power of community and our coalition of organizations. We / Marshall ROC felt it was important the financing of this Marshall Fire Recovery Center effort should be separate from donations previously collected so as to not detract from funds raised for the direct support of fire families, and we’re exceedingly grateful to the many organizations who have contributed so far to  help us launch the Recovery Center and effort:

Self Enquiry Life Fellowship is a nonprofit organization with worldwide outreach guided by the monastic wisdom of the Hansavedas Mission. The Nonprofit, with its headquarters in California, preserves indigenous knowledge from the Sanskrit heritage, including: extant literature on spiritual philosophy that is meaningful to modern inquiry; spiritual practices of Vedic antiquity that bring about peace in our communities through mindful participation; Himalayan yoga-vinyāsa and Ayurveda that promote wellness and mindfulness in daily living; and Himalayan meditation techniques of unbroken lineages which bring about mental clarity and compassion through self-empowerment, ultimately guiding the meditator to liberation.

The organization is enriched with extraordinary guidance from several Vedic monks of ancient monastic orders. It is rare for reclusive Himalayan monks, who have penanced in Himalaya, to become available to seekers or devotees and serve by disseminating precious streams of knowledge. His Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda, who is one such ordained Vedic monk of the Giri monastic order, is the spiritual head of the Hansavedas Mission and the spiritual founder of the Nonprofit.

**About Neurotherapeutic Pediatric Therapies**

A source of shared community and healing since 1985, "Neuro" is a place where everyone belongs. We are ***the only nonprofit outpatient clinic group in Oregon that provides pediatric occupational, physical, and speech therapy. For both pediatric clients and adults, we also offer mental health and naturopathic care***. Neuro programs are designed to honor the whole person, celebrate their victories, and seek growth in challenge. By using Nature-based therapy, Play therapy, Feeding therapy, and much much more, we incorporate the most effective and innovative treatments and techniques to empower our young clients with new skills and understanding about themselves and the world. Most of our clients are living with multiple diagnoses and many require long-term or even lifelong therapies. We provide supports for parents, foster parents, and guardians to help them help their children to live their best lives. Annually, more than 1500 families are supported by our 50 specialty providers and 25 dedicated staff.

As a majority of our clients receive Medicaid, the removal of financial barriers to therapy is vital to ensuring our families can thrive. Neuro is a trusted resource in each of our seven communities.  We're also the first organization of our kind designated as a Culturally Specific Services provider by the Oregon Health Authority--as we primarily serve neurodiverse people living with disabilities.

Concerning data reveals that 23% of Asian New Yorkers live in poverty, significantly higher than the citywide average of 16% of all New Yorkers. And a staggering 28% of Asian American older adults 65+ live in poverty. As the American Bar Association reveals, Asian elders, especially those from immigrant backgrounds, endure more social isolation and mental health struggles than their peers due to linguistics, financial, and cultural barriers. These factors combined significantly impact the mental and emotional well-being of Asian American older adults in a city where depression and suicide among older adult immigrants are on the rise.

**Heart of Dinner addresses these critical community needs by home-delivering to Elders with Heart of Dinner's signature nourishing care packages of culturally thoughtful and nutrient-dense food, bundled inside lovingly hand-illustrated bags, attached with uplifting handwritten notes in the Elder's native language.**

**A Note from Our Founders about Heart of Dinner & Our Evolution from 2020-2024:**

Dear Cherished Supporter,

Thank you for taking a moment to connect with our mission. We are so grateful for the opportunity to share our journey with you—a journey born from a deep, instinctive need to care for our Elders. **In March 2020, at the onset of the global pandemic, we leapt into action to support our Asian American elder community, who were facing devastating food insecurity, isolation, and loneliness.**

While many believe the urgency that defined the pandemic has passed, **the reality for our Elders remains critical. Even now, 1 in 3 Asian American older adults live below the poverty line.** These challenges are not new. For decades, this community has been overlooked, its struggles masked by the harmful “model minority” myth, which conceals the deep inequities faced by Asian American Elders. This, combined with language barriers, technology gaps, and economic hardship, means that many continue to lack access to the resources and care they deserve.

Out of a guttural instinct to protect and uplift our Elders, we **transformed our 300 square-foot apartment on the cusp of Chinatown and the Lower East Side into a sanctuary of cultural resonance and care.** We hyperfocused on those in the most critical state, providing emergency food relief and addressing their emotional needs through handwritten notes in their native languages, making sure our Elders felt seen, valued, and dignified.

**These care packages are more than just food—they are a lifeline.** Filled with culturally meaningful lunchboxes and fresh groceries beloved in Asian immigrant households like bok choy, rice, mung beans (and more!), all lovingly bundled inside decorated bags, attached with notes of love & joy that deliver warmth, connection, and belonging.

As our work evolved beyond emergency relief, we **built Heart of Dinner into a nonprofit focused on sustainable care.** Thanks to our incredible community of donors, partners, volunteers, and small team of staff, we have transformed into a **501(c)(3) public charity that continues to nourish and uplift our Elders, week after week.**

By Summer 2024, **we have delivered over 200,000 meals to beloved Elders living in significantly under-resourced and underinvested communities across New York City.** And our work is far from over. The challenges our Elders face didn’t begin with the pandemic, and they certainly won’t end with it. **These hardships are rooted in long-standing societal and governmental neglect, where policies and systems have historically overlooked the needs of this community.**

**Looking forward, we have plans to build Heart of Dinner's own delivery infrastructure with a fleet of electric vehicles, hire a dedicated team of drivers trained in our protocols—which emphasize cultural respect and thoughtful care when serving our Elders—and we aim to increase our care package distribution by 25%.** **These efforts will build upon our ongoing commitment to delivering care packages to our Elders and existing beneficiaries with the same high level of deep care and compassion.**

**Behind the scenes, we are strengthening systems to support Heart of Dinner’s sustainable growth,** so that we can continue to serve with deep care for years to come. **With these steps, we aim to cover all five boroughs of NYC—and even dream of extending our love and care to California.**

My Dog Is My Home's mission is to increase access to shelter and housing for people experiencing homelessness with animals.

My Dog Is My Home is a national nonprofit dedicated to increasing access to shelter and housing for people experiencing homelessness with companion animals. By securing their ability to maintain their most important relationships and find adequate shelter, we ensure every family’s right to build a home.

We assist service providers like homeless shelters in expanding their programming to allow humans and their companion animals to remain together. My Dog Is My Home’s programs currently fall into three categories: storytelling, community building, and technical assistance.

STORYTELLING
Storytelling is at the foundation of our work. We believe that people who are impacted by the problem are necessarily close to the solution. My Dog Is My Home provides a platform for people with actual lived experience of homelessness and animal companionship to share in their own words how co-sheltering people and animals together contributes to ending homelessness. Through exhibitions, speaking events, and video or narrated images, we are able to educate members of the public, program administrators, and policymakers about preserving the human-animal bond in circumstances of homelessness.

COMMUNITY BUILDING
We believe in the mantra that we are “stronger together.” My Dog Is My Home holds space for members of the homeless services and animal welfare communities to come together to connect, learn from one another, and solve mutual problems. Most notably, our community building efforts have created two related but distinct stakeholder watering holes: 

1) Annual Co-Sheltering Conference
Since 2021, My Dog Is My Home’s annual conference has drawn 400-500 people together from across disciplines to hear from homeless shelter programs about co-
sheltering models in practice, latest research in homelessness and animal companionship, and relevant policy efforts across the US and globally.

2) Co-Sheltering Collaborative
The Co-Sheltering Collaborative is a peer-to-peer learning network with membership that
spans across animal welfare and homeless services. This Collaborative meets as a large group on a quarterly basis to exchange resources, troubleshoot, and hear presentations from members on the progress of their work. In between large group meetings, working groups meet to produce deliverables that work towards collectively developed goals. The Collaborative also provides a sustained community for attendees of the annual conference.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE
My Dog Is My Home also works with homeless shelters that need more hands-on assistance with developing or implementing co-sheltering. We provide customized training, consultation on policies, and resource coordination to ensure a successful co-sheltering program.

About Alma Institute: 

Our mission is to strengthen and diversify the network of legal psychedelic service providers by offering prioritized enrollment and certification opportunities to people from marginalized communities. We seek to increase benefits and prevent harms by creating pathways to apprenticeship, employment, and ongoing peer support for facilitators in this growing field.

Launching in Oregon in 2023, our social justice-rooted training program practicum to prepare students for licensure under the nation’s first legal psilocybin services program. We seek to raise industry standards so people from all backgrounds can find belonging and thrive in psychedelic work. This requires anchoring in trauma-informed care, cultural humility, feedback, accountability, and meaningful practices of sacred reciprocity. 

We exist so psychedelic healing work can not only be available to our communities, but relevant to our ancestral and lived experiences and impactful for generations to come.

Our Approach:

We hold a strong focus on continued support and skill building for new graduates, and are weaving a culture of engagement, mentorship and accountability into our programming. We will support this by hosting in person and digital integration circles for new and experienced facilitators, supporting networks of student pods to continue learning together, and leading industry-wide conversations about ethical standards and care. 

Oregon ranks among the worst for mental health conditions and is dismal in access to therapy and psychiatric services. The numbers are even worse for people from marginalized social locations. These community members experience higher rates of the very mental health conditions that psilocybin can help address. However, psilocybin is not a cure-all. Wellbeing is systemic and depends on the harmony of a variety of factors. The success of psilocybin services will depend largely on the trust and rapport established between client and facilitator, the client's sense of safety and belonging, the environment in which services occur, and importantly, the follow-up care and support provided.

As in talk therapy, it is critical that patients have the option of working with someone who has shared identifiers and can relate to their lived experience. This is especially important when working with racial and gender-based trauma and deep healing processes. 

Additionally, the lasting benefits of psilocybin will rely on external factors, such as access to healthcare, safe and consistent housing, healthy food, community support, and gainful employment. It is essential that individuals working in this new industry understand and are engaged with the intersectional approach to wellbeing and community health; if they don't, the industry will be peddling a short-term band-aid solution, with service sites overwhelmed by high-paying experience seekers and fail to deliver on the promises of lasting change and healing promoted by the Psilocybin Services Act. 

Alma Institute seeks to bring a deeper inquiry to psychedelic therapies and help raise standards for the field at large. If we are successful, we can shift the conversation from one laser focused on mental health, to one about the historical roots of our suffering and the systemic shifts needed for collective healing.
