ESRI provides comprehensive, free preschool for thousands of children in Ethiopia and an  income generation program for Mothers.


*ESRI is a high quality, comprehensive, preschool program for disadvantaged Ethiopian children which gives them the tools to succeed at school.*  The *ESRI Mothers Empowerment Program provides vocational training for selected mothers and helps them establish businesses. The cost to support each mother is $350.*                                                                                                                   In addition to a full classroom cognitive learning program, ESRI's comprehensive program includes continuing teacher education, evaluation of children's progress, parenting education, social services, and access to physical and behavioral health services for the children and families..
Since inception in 2007 ESRI has opened 113 pre-schools in 8 Regions throughout Ethiopia including rural areas   Over 70,000 students have benefited from an ESRI preschool education. ESRI partners with the Regional Boards of Education to implement the program. The ESRI program includes a 3-year curriculum, intensive teacher training and rigorous quality control. Behavioral management and health screening with referrals as needed and a parenting education program are also part of the ESRI comprehensive program. ESRI has trained over 2,500 preschool teachers and primary caregivers of children.
Ethiopian children enter first grade at age 7, unprepared to learn. Many fall behind quickly, lose interest, and by the end of the first grade 25% have dropped out of school. Over 50% drop out by the end of fourth grade. The data indicates that the children who drop out are the children who fall behind.
The Mother’s Empowerment Program is an integral and vital part of ESRI’s Comprehensive program. Selected Mothers in each of the 8 Regions attend training in their chosen fields. When the mothers complete their training, they receive materials so they can set up businesses. Past business includes commercial poultry, tailoring, injera baking and restaurants.
ESRI collaborates with the respective Regional Women’s and Children’s Bureaus to arrange mentoring for the mothers as they establish their chosen business.
Mothers who have participated in this ESRI program report the impact on their lives includes decreased stress and increased self-esteem for themselves and better nutrition, improved housing, and a path out of poverty and a sense of hope for the future for the entire family.
ESRI’s expansion into the Regions of Ethiopia requires more preschool teachers. in the regions. To address this issue and to ensure the quality of preschool teachers for the future, ESRI has partnered with two universities in Ethiopia to develop new 3-year college training program for pre-school teachers.   This program is currently offered in 2 Universities in 2 Regions of Ethiopia.  As this program expands to additional universities, it will improve the quality of preschool education throughout the Country.

Founded in 1995, the AWC Scholarship Program provides rural, low income Thai girls with scholarships to complete high school.

The AWC Scholarship Program awards scholarships annually to female high school students in 28 schools across 21 provinces in central and northern Thailand. In the 2023/24 school year, our donors sponsored 250 students.

Each $180 USD scholarship allows a student to pay the extra, mandatory costs of high school that are not covered by the government (books, uniforms, supplies, meals and transportation). These costs can be prohibitive to low income families and often girls have to leave school because their families cannot pay them.

Eligibility criteria for young women in grades 10-12 (M4-M6) are good academic performance (> 2.5GPA), a low family income, good behavior and a commitment to education while building a sustainable community. ​

Empower leaders to transform education in Colombia, make Colombia a more equitable country through education.

Colombia faces enormous challenges of access, quality and permanency in education. 75% of boys and girls from 0 to 5 years do not receive early education (Wasserman 2020), just 42,8% of young people in the age range to be in 10th and 11th grade have a school to attend (Fundación Corona, 2019). Regarding quality, 33% of 15 year old students reach level 2 (out of 6) in the PISA tests (OECD 2018), and about the permanence of students, only 44% that start school finish 11th grade. This is exacerbated due to the armed conflict in Colombia, being the first country in LATAM where the first cause of death is violence. Displacement of millions of families has been a direct consequence of this, which added to the actual migration of Venezuelans, constitutes a big challenge to relocate and secure them job,health and educational opportunities.

In 2011, a group of 3 young men came together to create an organization to address educational challenges. Enseña por Colombia has a unique, locally rooted but globally informed model, which has been successful in 60 countries that currently implement it. Our strategy is based on our belief that to tackle the educational challenges in Colombia we need diverse leadership on different levels of the system, so that diverse professionals, experienced teachers, students and school principals connect with the mission of improving education and achieve transformative results in themselves and in their communities. These experiences are lived through programs, learning communities, meeting places, and special projects that foster transcendent leadership.

Helping Women Period provides menstrual products (mostly disposable pads & tampons, but sustainable products when available) to those who need them; we also offer menstrual health workshops, advocacy (let's eliminate period stigma!), and peace of mind.   Since we work with a local janitorial supplier, we can provide one person's menstrual needs for an entire year for only $35.

Life Bloom Services International (LBSI) is a strength-based transformational program utilizing peer mentoring and healing relationships to invite women, girls and children into movement from victim to whole life health. LBSI has supported more than 13,800 women, girls, and children (and men too) who have experienced abuse, trafficking and exploitation to regain their dignity. Vision : LBSI sees a world where women, girls and children who have experienced abuse and exploitation transform to become dignified leaders. Mission : LBSI is a strength- based transformational program utilizing peer mentoring and healing relationships to invite women and girls into movement from victim to whole life health. Specifically, we find innovative new ways to allow collaborative access in these areas by enabling groups of scientists to work together to make these platforms as public goods that can scale up to be used by many.

Our Community program creates online-first scientific conferences and community events that focus on human interaction, allowing us to leverage the equitable nature of online work without significant sacrifices in the networking and connection aspect of these events. 

The NMDA program provides researchers with real on the job experience in internships, job matching, and career guidance. 

Our large buy in to these communities we serve provides us the ability to conquer problems in science dependent on large network effects, such as issues in academic publishing, job matching, and large research collaborations.

Through a 360 approach, the codeHive program that not only focuses on building technical skills but also on increasing young women’s agency, The program offers young women who did not have access to a well-rounded education the opportunity to develop the most sought-after tech skills, equipping them with the necessary tools to compete equally in the tech industry. 

We believe that the only ticket to decent work and economic prosperity is giving young women access to meaningful and well-paying jobs. With increased agency and that extra earning power, the young women are able to recognize their full potential in economic spaces and break gender norms; codeHive graduates in senior positions are playing a key role in creating more inclusive work spaces.

History of Toa Nafasi
"Nova was sexually abused as a child multiple times starting at the age of six. As a boy child, he had neither the comprehension nor the language to report to a parent or teacher. Growing up with the secret and shame, he learned child sexual abuse is common place in his community. And children with disabilities are twice susceptible to abuse and violence. Studies show 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 7 boys will experience sexual violence between the age of 2 and 17. Additionally, 1 in 3 students enrolled in grade 1 have a learning disability of some kind. With this knowledge, he went on to start Linda Community to address abuse and violence and later fold the organization with a learning disabilities project. This birthed Toa Nafasi Foundation – a locally led organization building the capacity of local young adults to support vulnerable children in public primary schools. 

Why Toa Nafasi
Tanzanian education doesn’t treat each child as an individual with diverse aptitudes and learning styles. The curriculum for primary schools barely encourages and supports children from early age and grade to develop strengths, overcome challenges, and cultivate creativity.  In 11 public primary schools in Moshi we have surveyed in 2020, we have learned 30 percent of grade 1 students have a learning disability. In a community where 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 7 boys are likely to experience sexual violence (According to a 2009 National Survey on Violence Against Children), children with disabilities are twice vulnerable to violence.

The goal of Toa Nafasi Foundation is therefore to enrich the classroom experience, create a linkage between school and home, unleash children self protective skills and offer a chance to succeed for both student and tutor.

Toa Nafasi addresses three major infrastructural challenges in Tanzania. The first problem is the lack of special education information and programming in the Tanzanian public school system. Nearly 30 percent of students have a learning difficulty don’t respond to standard educational methods. Without effective special education pedagogies in place, these students are often stigmatized as disobedient, lazy, or stupid. The second is the lack of comprehensive body safety education and support in the school system that help students build their ability to protect and prevent abuse and violence. 1 in 5 children experience violence before they are 18 years. And those with disabilities are twice vulnerable. Without taking drastic measures, the children will continue to experience violence with multiple short and long term impacts. The third problem Toa Nafasi addresses is widespread lack of opportunity for young adults. Tanzanian youth under 30 make up over 70 percent of the population yet unemployment rate is 11. 5 percent.

Our Approach

The Toa Nafasi model is a three-tiered approach of assessment, referral, and curriculum modification that build the asset of young adults and enhancing community relations. In assessment, our tutors observe all the children enrolled in grade 1 for social behaviors, adaptive abilities, and motor skills as well as test them for literacy, numeracy, and cognitive skills to get a full picture. In referrals, we work with health professionals and institutions to treat those pupils whom we have identified are struggling due to medical, psychological issues or experiences of trauma. In curriculum modification, tutors work with children who are struggling to reach their potential to help them complete the standard Tanzanian curriculum in a modified context. We've also modified the curriculum to include personal body safety curriculum for children.

Our programs

Toa Nafasi recruits young adults from the local community, and provide them professional development support on child protection and learning disabilities. The young adults work full time as tutors supporting public primary school students with learning difficulties and at risk of abuse and violence.

Each year, the tutors assess students enrolled in grade one to identify children with experience of trauma and with learning difficulties. Then follows a Referral stage where students identified with medical and psychological challenges are taken to care and treatment facilities. The young adults then provide tutoring and psychosocial support in child friendly spaces, and through play.

An important component of the program is community engagement, where the tutors work with families of the vulnerable children, school administrators, justice system, and community development and education offices to better support the vulnerable children, to promote safety, wellbeing and address the stigma often surrounding abuse, violence and learning differences.

Toa Nafasi provides the students with the education and holistic support services, and the young adults that run the program with employment. The impact is not only empowering individual students with age appropriate knowledge and support, but also giving the young adults a meaningful role in the community.

Through a gold-standard system of accountability to the young people and communities we serve, we have created a model that radically improves girls’ prospects of becoming independent, influential women. Our impact increases exponentially through the Association of young women educated with CAMFED’s support. Together, we multiply the number of girls in school and accelerate their path to livelihoods and leadership.

CAMFED supports girls in government primary and secondary schools across Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, Tanzania and Malawi to access school, succeed, and become leaders of change in their communities.

PERIOD is a youth-fueled nonprofit that strives to eradicate period poverty and stigma through service, education, and advocacy. 

PERIOD. works to end period poverty and stigma through service, advocacy, and education. PERIOD. does this by providing free menstrual products to menstruators in need by partnering with community organizations through our global network of hundreds of partner non-profit organizations, community groups and 400 global PERIOD. chapters each month. Our chapters and partners help us distribute period products to menstruators in need in their own communities, host product drives, conduct educational trainings and discuss healthy menstruation to destigmatize periods. PERIOD. has active chapters in over 40 states and over 30 countries. 

In order to truly end period poverty, we must end the systemic roots of period poverty. PERIOD. works to help draft, pass and implement policies and legislation to mandate period product in workplaces and schools, as well as repeal the discriminatory tampon tax, which adds to the expensive cost of menstrual products. PERIOD. knows that this new generation of youth leaders will solve period poverty in their lifetime!

The PERIOD Chapter network is the core of our organization. Made up of youth activists, chapters are mostly based in middle schools, high schools, college campuses and young adult community groups. PERIOD believes in the importance of centering youth leadership and activism in the pursuit of menstrual equity, and therefore utilizes resources to empower chapters in their local service, education and advocacy planning. Chapters receive leadership development and advocacy training, helping to focus their efforts on providing access to menstrual products to menstruators experiencing homelessness. They also advocate for equitable policies, working with local institutions such as school districts and local government, to provide access to products for those experiencing need.

WAW was founded in April 2001 to advocate for women then living under Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Since its inception, WAW has become the largest organization for Afghan women and girls globally, and the largest women’s organization in Afghanistan. To date, WAW has served over 30,000 clients and trained more than 330,000 individuals on women’s rights. WAW provides life-saving and life-changing services, education, and advocacy for women and children across Afghanistan and NY who have endured human rights violations. WAW’s capacity has grown from being volunteer-run when it was founded to now employing over 750 staff members, the vast majority of whom are Afghan and female.

NAPAWF is the only organization focused on building power with AAPI women and girls to influence critical decisions that affect our lives, our families and our communities. Using a reproductive justice framework, we elevate AAPI women and girls to impact policy and drive systemic change in the United States. 

NAPAWF was founded in 1996 to realize the vision of 100 AAPI women who recognized the need for an organization that would amplify AAPI women’s stories and experiences. Being seen and heard in the public narrative gives us the power to shape the policy and cultural change needed to gain agency over our lives, families, and communities.

Today, we are mobilizing and building power in 14 cities across the United States to create social, political, and economic change for AAPI women and girls. We also show up in solidarity for other women of color who are experiencing injustice and harms of oppression and marginalization.

National Asian Pacific American Womens Forum

We connect and support a network of women, trans people of any gender, and non-binary people interested in Effective Altruism.

Effective Altruism is about answering the question, "How can we use our resources to help others the most?" We believe that to solve this question, we need incredible people with a diversity of skills and perspectives.

We started WANBAM because we identified an opportunity for a high-leverage, positive impact. In 2019, 71% of respondents to the EA Survey reported their gender as male. Additionally, the survey found women twice as likely to cite a lack of diversity or welcomingness as a barrier to greater involvement in EA. Personal contact was overwhelmingly the most important factor for retention, especially for women. This pointed toward the value of mentorship to complement and support EA community-building efforts in attracting and retaining dedicated, talented people.

WANBAM was founded with the aim of inspiring and supporting women, trans people of any gender, and non-binary people pursuing high-impact career paths. Since late 2019, we have matched and facilitated the mentoring of over 230 people. Our mentor base has quickly grown to over 90 people from a diversity of organizations.
