The World Future Council (WFC) works towards safeguarding the rights of future generations and nature by embedding future-just governance principles at all levels of decision making. We are committed to creating a healthy and sustainable planet with just and peaceful societies – now and in the future. To achieve this, we find and disseminate effective solutions for climate protection, sustainable ecosystems, the renewable energy transition, agroecology, and much more. The World Future Council (WFC) was launched in 2007 by Jakob von Uexküll in Hamburg, Germany.
The WFC is guided by a key belief that solutions exist to the shared challenges faced by the global community. We ensure that intergenerational exchanges and “future-just” thinking are at the heart of our work, which is also informed by up to 50 Councillors, who are globally recognised thought leaders and changemakers - across sectors, regions and generations.
Some of our work includes:
World Future Policy Award - the world’s leading prize for pioneering, future-just laws, spotlighting transformative policies for a better world and a more sustainable future.
Future Justice Hub - dynamic network platform designed to empower policy makers and institutions to shape a fairer future for all generations. Serving as a strategic partner and knowledge platform for decision makers, the Hub equips leaders with tools and insights needed to embed intergenerational justice into the heart of policy making.
Just Energy Transition - through work such as the Global Renewables Congress and the 100%RE MAP projects, the WFC works with all relevant stakeholders across groups and geographies, including NGOs, the private sector, development actors and Parliamentarians, to build local capacities, and enable and further the just energy transition in the Global North and South. Topics addressed include for example skills building, green jobs, and climate finance.
Peace, Democracy and Future Generations - the Women and Youth Agents of Peace (WYAP) project focuses on establishing democratic norms and a culture of peacebuilding and trust in post-conflict societies. We focus on empowering and including women, youth and displaced persons - internal or cross-border in rural and urban areas to ensure they are able to fully partake in economic and social life.
Resilient Agro-Food Systems - the Himalayan Agroecology Initiative is a strategic partnership working with renowned partners and Himalayan governments to support the emergence of multi-stakeholder processes that develop and build capacities to facilitate the implementation of roadmaps for resilient food systems.
