Providing NYC Public Schools with Training and Resources to Start and Sustain Student Journalism Programs and Publications

Press Pass NYC equips under-resourced NYC public schools with free faculty training, student resources and program support to launch or revive a student news publication – and keep it running. Our goal is to level the playing field in a city where a 2022 Baruch College study found 93 of the 100 highest poverty high schools had no student newspaper. Working on a news team gives teens the opportunity to develop their curiosity and passion by writing about topics that interest them, developing critical thinking, teamwork and leadership along with media literacy.

Since 2021, we’ve helped 30 NYC public schools start or revive a student news publication, online or in print, with 14 more coming in the 2025-26 school year. Every donation goes toward supporting these budding news teams through fellowships for teachers and students.

The Rivanna Area Queer Center provides a safe refuge for all LGBTQIA+ people

LGBTQIA+ people need spaces of our own where we can take refuge, build resilient communities, and organize for our collective liberation. RAQC provides a safe and loving home for the queer community in Charlottesville and the surrounding counties. Programming at RAQC addresses multiple areas of need: support groups, peer counseling, and on-site mental health professionals contribute to the emotional wellbeing of our community. Classes and workshops on topics as diverse as screen printing, foraging, and self defense address our physical and creative needs. Social events like mixers, parties, and performances ensure that our region’s vibrant queer culture continues to flourish. In addition to our own programming, RAQC also serves as a safe and accessible space where all local queer organizations and individuals can host their own events.

PJI is a different kind of civil rights organization; we don’t follow any national agenda or framework. We confront issues and take on cases that, very often, no other organization will venture to challenge. Our work requires **deep investments of time, energy, creativity, and collaboration** with partner organizations, legal and community stakeholders, and those most directly impacted by the criminal legal system. Our work **blurs the traditional lines of litigation and advocacy** as we develop and execute novel legal and engagement strategies to attack seemingly intractable problems.

Our methodology is **client-centered and community-partnered**. We use power building, narrative construction, and storytelling as core vehicles. Hong Kong Watch defends human rights, freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Watch is a [UK registered charity](https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/charity-details/?regid=1180013&subid=0) founded in 2017, consisting of Hong Kongers and friends of Hong Kong, working closely with Hong Kong community groups in the diaspora.

We inform and educate legislators, policy-makers and the media, and raise awareness among the wider public, about the violations of human rights, basic freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong, and advocate for actions to assist Hong Kongers. We do this through a combination of in-depth research reports, regular topical briefings, opinion editorials, media briefings and interviews, and advocacy campaigns.

We also help integrate, support, welcome and strengthen the capacity of the Hong Kong diaspora, through a programme of civic and political education and community engagement.

PauseAI US is a grassroots organization demanding a pause on frontier AI development until it is safe to proceed. 

PauseAI US advocates for an [international treaty to pause frontier AI development](https://pauseai.info/proposal). But we don't need to achieve that treaty to have positive impact-- most of our positive impact will likely come from moving the Overton window and [making more moderate AI Safety measures more possible](https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/Y4SaFM5LfsZzbnymu/the-case-for-ai-safety-advocacy-to-the-public#How_AI_Pause_advocacy_can_effect_change). Advocating straightforwardly for what we consider the best solution is an excellent frame for educating the general public and elected officials on AI danger-- we don't know what we're doing building powerful AI, so we should wait until we do to proceed-- compared to tortured and confusing discussions of other solutions like alignment that have no clear associated actions for those outside the technical field.

To fulfill our goal of moving the Overton window in the direction of simply not building AGI while it is dangerous to do so, **PauseAI US has two major areas of programming: protesting and lobbying**.

**Protests** are the core of our volunteer organizing, local social community, and social media presence. Protests send the general overarching message to Pause frontier AI training, in line with the [PauseAI proposal](https://pauseai.info/proposal). Sometimes protests take issue with the AI industry and take place at AGI company offices like Meta, OpenAI, or Anthropic while others may be in support of international cooperative efforts. Protests get media attention which communicates not only that the protestors want to Pause AI, but shows in a visceral and easily understood way the stakes of this problem, filling the bizarre missing mood surrounding AI danger ("If AI companies are doing something so dangerous, how come there aren't people in the streets?"). Protests are a highly neglected angle in the AI Safety fight. Ultimately, the impact of protests is in moving the Overton window for the public, which in turn affects what elected officials think and do.

Organizing Director Felix De Simone is based in DC and does **direct lobbying** on the Hill as well as connecting constituents to their representatives for **grassroots lobbying**. Felix holds regular email-writing and letter-writing workshops for the general public on the PauseAI US Discord ([please join!](https://discord.gg/TmpmYejE3e)) aimed at specific events, such as emailing and calling the California Assembly and Senate during the SB-1047 hearings and workshops coordinating supportive emails expressing hope about the possibility of a global treaty to pause frontier AI development. We work with SAG-AFTRA representatives to coordinate with their initiatives and add an x-risk dimension to their primarily digital identity and provenance-related concerns. 

PauseAI US is part of a number of other more speculative legal interventions to Pause AI, such as working with Gabriel Weil to develop a strict liability ballot initiative version of SB-1047 and locate funders to get it on the 2026 ballot. We are members of [Coalition for a Baruch Plan for AI](https://www.cbpai.org/) and Felix attended the UN Summit for the Future Activist Days. We hope to be able to serve as a plaintiff in lawsuits against AI companies that our attorney allies are developing, a role which very few others would be willing or able to fill. Lobbying is more of a nitty gritty approach, but **the goal of our lobbying is the same as our protesting**: to show our elected officials that cooperation to not build AGI is possible, because the will and the ways are there.

Psst… addresses the threat to whistleblowing by shifting it from an individual pursuit to ***collective action***. Collective action diffuses the risks associated with whistleblowing while also increasing the impact of disclosures.

The mechanism for doing so is the Psst Safe, a secure repository where insiders can record their concerns, whether big or small, in a repository while protecting their identities. Individual deposits in the repository are vetted for authenticity and analyzed to uncover patterns among deposits. Patterns are used to create complete stories and/or legal cases; depositors are given the option to be part of the collective, always with legal and safety measures in place.

2. **Institutions - Scaling systemic change**: We provide technical advice and expertise on the design of institutionalised Assemblies that are more than one-offs and provide support for the relational and political work to ensure change is sustainable. To us, Citizens’ Assemblies are not just ‘tools’ that should complement elections. Our work is about building new institutions. We think the architecture of democracy needs to expand to include Assemblies with real weight and power. We want to see empowered, decision-making Assemblies next. 
3. **Innovations - Enabling experimentation**: While we have evidence of ‘what works’, there are still many unanswered research questions and many innovations to be tried and tested. We are prototyping tech-enhanced deliberative assemblies. We are exploring more-than-human governance approaches. And we are expanding the core ideas of Citizens’ Assemblies into other domains beyond government.

CANVAS (Center for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies) was founded in 2005 by Slobodan Djinovic and Srdja Popovic to advocate for the use of nonviolent resistance in the promotion of human rights and democracy. Since then, they have worked with pro-democracy activists from more than 50 countries. From CANVAS' headquarters in Belgrade, Serbia, they operate a network of international trainers and consultants with expertise in building and running successful non-violent movements. Their work is focused to build more just, democratic, and responsible society. CANVAS’ offices in Washington DC, Tbilisi, Manila Johannesburg and Belgrade aim to provide maximum support to the activists on the ground, and they serve as a hub for local and regional initiatives that rely on principals of nonviolent struggle and creative activism. Their organization disseminates knowledge through a variety of media, including workshops, books, videos, and specialized courses and all for free. CANVAS has produced several publications on nonviolent resistance over the years, based on intensive research and our members’ decades of experience in the field. CANVAS Citizens Association 

Uses technology to simplify political engagement, increase voter turnout, and strengthen American democracy.

The largest nonprofit, non-partisan voting registration and get out the vote (GOTV) technology platform in America. It has registered more than 3.3 million new voters, verified 8.2 million voters’ registration status, and has helped over 30 million website users by providing registration links and deadlines, polling location details, and other essential voting information for each state. Vote.org also leverages its SMS-based GOTV program each year, targeting low-propensity voters in regularly scheduled and special elections.

To turn out the vote among young people and people of color, Vote.org partners with corporations and other organizations in the civic space, including Gannett Media Group's USA Today, Vote Save America, and The Andrew Goodman Foundation. Vote.org has also launched exciting new partnerships in 2020 with The Webby Awards, NAACP Youth Coalition, GLSEN, wikiHow, and Young Entertainment Activists. Many of their corporate partners have signed on to Vote.org's Election Day campaign, launched in 2018, which commits them to giving their employees paid time off to vote on Election Day. To date, 500 companies have signed the pledge.

Vote.org was originally founded as Long Distance Voter (LDV), which served as a comprehensive online resource for absentee ballot information. LDV had 500,000 viewers within six months of its 2008 launch, and in 2014, it was the official source of data for Google's "How to Vote" project, which received over 30 million views.

In 2016, LDV rebranded itself as Vote.org, with funding and support from the Y Combinator. That fall, Vote.org ran its first-in-nation SMS peer-to-peer voter registration drive, and on Election Day 2016, Vote.org ran the single largest non-partisan SMS GOTV drive in America, providing polling location information to over 1 million low-propensity voters.

With the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic in America, Vote.org recently added a page to its website, offering regularly updated, state-by-state information for voters whose primaries have been postponed or otherwise delayed. As the pandemic creates new barriers to safe and fair elections, Vote.org is working to keep voters engaged in the democratic process and prevent misinformation from dissuading them from participating in the 2020 election.

Vote.org's mission is to use technology to simplify political engagement, increase voter turnout, and strengthen American democracy. With its new leadership team, led by CEO Andrea Hailey, Vote.org is on track to serve 12 times the number of people it served in 2018. The Transformative Justice Center

Empowering vulnerable children in India with 18 years of holistic support to break the cycle of poverty in a single generation.

MAD delivers a 18-year-long intervention to Children in Need of Care & Protection (CNCP) in India that has the proven capability to enable them to break the cycle of poverty in a single generation. MAD has pioneered a community-powered social protection system that mobilises the community to provide high-touch and highly scalable, age-appropriate progression mentoring.


**History:** Started in 2006 in 1 city with 70 volunteers & 120 beneficiaries, today, Make A Difference (MAD) is a network of over 2,000 volunteers mentoring 3200 children & youth across 18 cities, annually.

Over the last 18 years, we’ve mobilised over 20,000 volunteers who have played their part in helping India’s most vulnerable children succeed academically, socially, and professionally.

 **Vision:** Children born into intergenerational poverty are able to break the cycle in a single generation.

**Mission:** Empower communities to take radical responsibility for their most vulnerable children and ensure they get the care & support needed to break the cycle of poverty permanently in a single-generation



**Goal:**

Our goal is to eradicate poverty in our lifetime. We achieve this by building a nationwide network of empowered communities that act as safety nets and springboards for children in need of care and protection. 

Through our proven **Progression Mentoring Program**, communities can provide step-by-step guidance, empowering children to cross the life-changing **empowerment threshold of $360 (INR. 30,000) per month** and leave poverty behind, permanently.

 

**Activities:**

[Progression Mentoring](https://coda.io/d/_dyxrQBYH4VG/_sutVO) is MAD’s award-winning **18-year-long high-touch intervention** model for children born into intergenerational poverty. It is a **community-powered, volunteer-driven program** for age-appropriate growth & development that enables a group of young people in the community to self organise to provide the required care, skill building and resource to the most vulnerable children in the community.

**One-on-one mentoring** by young individuals, guiding children through critical life stages, has the highest success rate in healing from **ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences)** and bridging the gap left by struggling parents.

 It’s also the fastest way for India’s vulnerable children to break free from poverty permanently. While it typically takes **7 generations** for a family to escape poverty in India, with personalised mentoring, it can be achieved in just **one generation.**



**Program Delivery:**

MAD delivers Progression Mentoring through a **Community Organising model,** empowering young leaders to mobilize community members into active citizens. Community Organisers do this by forming chapters of 200 volunteers and children. Each chapter provides weekly mentoring to 200 vulnerable children from the **age of 10 to 28 at no cost to the child.**

 Our **service-based leadership development curriculum**, led by Community Organisers (CO), guides chapter leaders in sourcing, recruiting, onboarding, managing, and retaining mentors.

Humans On The Loop is a transdisciplinary inquiry into the nature of agency in our age of automation.

In our AI-infused society, the gap between imagination and “reality” is smaller than it’s ever been — and now it’s time for humankind to graduate from asking if our dreams are possible to asking how we can dream better. This means cultivating deeper self-awareness, more discipline and humility, and a better metaphysics of technology to help us wield these new superpowers. But decades into a period of rapid information scaling, our grasp of consensus reality and executive function have eroded, causing an epistemic crisis. The wicked problems of this century require coordination at unprecedented scale, but our greatest natural resource — attention — has worn even thinner than our topsoil. How do we regenerate it and restore the faculties we need to be good stewards of this new ecology of minds?

Navigating the challenges that come with new information technologies is a group exercise and demands inherently plural approaches. The right response to tools that amplify our biases is to lean in with curiosity and play, not fearI have spent two decades studying and synthesizing  perspectives on intelligence and technology, innovation, and human-technology co-evolution…as well as testing bleeding-edge creative tools in public, helping cultivate systems literacies for navigating transformation, and fostering a massive network of mentors and collaborators with whom I share a devotion to the cultivation of a healthy Biosphere and Technosphere. As AI comes of age, this is the moment to recruit as many of them as we can into a multimodal public inquiry on wisdom and technology, power and responsibility, holistic practices for cultivating saner futures…and how we can keep Humans On The Loop and at the wheel.

It's going to be a trip — how can we make sure that it’s a good one?

This project exists to foster a renaissance of collaboration and the conditions for new ways of knowing. Its goals include to:

– Boost public discourse at the intersection of technology and wisdom
– Create a legacy of public goods that help train instruments for deepening our understanding
– Prototype and demonstrate experimental tools for thought
– Promote the adoption of reflexive AI for both private and public good
– Help map the emergent ecosystem of changemaking orgs and wise innovators
– Fertilize new narratives and strategies for navigating "wicked problems"
– Bridge domains and cultures in positive-sum collaboration

Advancing racial and economic justice to ensure dignity and opportunity for low-income people and people of color.

EBC builds power with systems-impacted people to drive systems-change. Over its 27-year history, the families and communities EBC organizes with have collectively transformed the criminal justice system in California, from closing  abusive youth prisons to passing first-of-its-kind legislation to challenge racial discrimination in trials and sentencing. Building on the organizing approach of civil rights leader Ella Baker, EBC invests in the leadership of the people most impacted by racial oppression. EBC is led by systems-impacted people and implements solutions created from lived expertise. Recent California victories like the Racial Justice Act for All, the RISE Act, and the Access to Programming Act were pioneered at EBC and are poised to bring thousands home to their families. EBC also invests in leadership in its core base. For example, currently incarcerated people are most impacted – but least included – in policies for decarceration. Through EBC’s 9,000+ inside member network, currently incarcerated people weigh in on policy solutions, organize with their peers, speak out on issues impacting their lives, and get support to advocate for their freedom. Locally, in the Bay Area, EBC builds credible alternatives to prisons. Restore Oakland, EBC’s community center, models investments that return opportunity to over-criminalized neighborhoods. Here, EBC and partners offer resources like restorative justice circles, re-entry support, tenants rights tools, job training, and entrepreneurship funding that build a vibrant, prosperous community. Organizing for safety, power, freedom, and opportunity, EBC advances the self-determination of the people most impacted by the criminal justice system.

We’re here to help get tech projects on track, protect teams and tools from threats, and ensure technology is never a barrier to victory — in ways that are accessible, culturally specific and sustainable.

Trestle Collaborative is the place for front line organizations to secure free-tech services. Since our start in 2021, we’ve worked on some of the most critical high impact issues by providing over $1.6 million in free tech services through our community of over 130+ mission-driven technologists who provide hands-on guidance to front-line organizations.

 The Fund for Congolese Women (FFC)   supports women's grassroots organizations through financial and technical assistance.  FFC is unique - the only women-led grant-giving NGO in the entire DRC. We provide grants to local women-led organizations that are often in the most remote, difficult to reach areas.   Why? We are unshakable believers in local solutions to local issues.  We know that the brave women and girls working at the grassroots level have the solutions. We know that when women become agents of change, they benefit, their families benefit, their communities benefit. Since its inception in 2007, FFC has funded more than 386 projects throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo. We support projects focusing on eliminating sexual violence against women, delivering empowerment programs for women and girls, educating women about HIV/AIDS and reproductive health, and advocating for environmental justice and access to resources and land for women.
