Providing NYC Public Schools with Training and Resources to Start and Sustain Student Journalism Programs and Publications

Press Pass NYC equips under-resourced NYC public schools with free faculty training, student resources and program support to launch or revive a student news publication – and keep it running. Our goal is to level the playing field in a city where a 2022 Baruch College study found 93 of the 100 highest poverty high schools had no student newspaper. Working on a news team gives teens the opportunity to develop their curiosity and passion by writing about topics that interest them, developing critical thinking, teamwork and leadership along with media literacy.

Since 2021, we’ve helped 30 NYC public schools start or revive a student news publication, online or in print, with 14 more coming in the 2025-26 school year. Every donation goes toward supporting these budding news teams through fellowships for teachers and students.

The World Children’s Festival (WCF) offers a transformative experience, infusing creativity with empathy to give them hope. As empathy flourishes, divisions diminish, polarization lessens, consensus emerges, nations come together, and the world becomes more peaceful. The **Promise of Justice Initiative** (PJI) is a New Orleans-based decarceration organization that stands at the forefront of the fight for the dignity, freedom, and autonomy of those targeted and touched by the criminal legal system and mass incarceration.

Because racism and mass incarceration are entrenched and pervasive, PJI’s approach is multifaceted, including collective action, legislative advocacy, civil and criminal litigation, and reframing narrative discourse. PJI:

- Challenges the notion that prisons keep us safe and that people with convictions do not deserve basic rights.

PJI is a different kind of civil rights organization; we don’t follow any national agenda or framework. We confront issues and take on cases that, very often, no other organization will venture to challenge. Our work requires **deep investments of time, energy, creativity, and collaboration** with partner organizations, legal and community stakeholders, and those most directly impacted by the criminal legal system. Our work **blurs the traditional lines of litigation and advocacy** as we develop and execute novel legal and engagement strategies to attack seemingly intractable problems.

Our methodology is **client-centered and community-partnered**. We use power building, narrative construction, and storytelling as core vehicles. LGBTQIA+ people need spaces of our own where we can take refuge, build resilient communities, and organize for our collective liberation. RAQC provides a safe and loving home for the queer community in Charlottesville and the surrounding counties. Programming at RAQC addresses multiple areas of need: support groups, peer counseling, and on-site mental health professionals contribute to the emotional wellbeing of our community. Classes and workshops on topics as diverse as screen printing, foraging, and self defense address our physical and creative needs. Social events like mixers, parties, and performances ensure that our region’s vibrant queer culture continues to flourish. In addition to our own programming, RAQC also serves as a safe and accessible space where all local queer organizations and individuals can host their own events.

Despite Africa’s immense potential, entrepreneurs across the continent and in the diaspora continue to face high unemployment, limited access to capital, and systemic barriers to scaling their solutions.

The **African Diaspora Innovation Fund (AfDIF)** is a bold initiative by the **African Diaspora Network (ADN)** in partnership with **Myriad USA**. Together, we aim to **mobilize philanthropic capital** to support African and African-descendant social entrepreneurs with **grants of up to $25,000**.

AfDIF bridges the gap between remittances and long-term investment, transforming diaspora generosity into **scalable, sustainable impact** across Africa and its global diaspora.

PauseAI US is a grassroots organization demanding a pause on frontier AI development until it is safe to proceed. 

PauseAI US advocates for an [international treaty to pause frontier AI development](https://pauseai.info/proposal). But we don't need to achieve that treaty to have positive impact-- most of our positive impact will likely come from moving the Overton window and [making more moderate AI Safety measures more possible](https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/Y4SaFM5LfsZzbnymu/the-case-for-ai-safety-advocacy-to-the-public#How_AI_Pause_advocacy_can_effect_change). Advocating straightforwardly for what we consider the best solution is an excellent frame for educating the general public and elected officials on AI danger-- we don't know what we're doing building powerful AI, so we should wait until we do to proceed-- compared to tortured and confusing discussions of other solutions like alignment that have no clear associated actions for those outside the technical field.

To fulfill our goal of moving the Overton window in the direction of simply not building AGI while it is dangerous to do so, **PauseAI US has two major areas of programming: protesting and lobbying**.

**Protests** are the core of our volunteer organizing, local social community, and social media presence. Protests send the general overarching message to Pause frontier AI training, in line with the [PauseAI proposal](https://pauseai.info/proposal). Sometimes protests take issue with the AI industry and take place at AGI company offices like Meta, OpenAI, or Anthropic while others may be in support of international cooperative efforts. Protests get media attention which communicates not only that the protestors want to Pause AI, but shows in a visceral and easily understood way the stakes of this problem, filling the bizarre missing mood surrounding AI danger ("If AI companies are doing something so dangerous, how come there aren't people in the streets?"). Protests are a highly neglected angle in the AI Safety fight. Ultimately, the impact of protests is in moving the Overton window for the public, which in turn affects what elected officials think and do.

Organizing Director Felix De Simone is based in DC and does **direct lobbying** on the Hill as well as connecting constituents to their representatives for **grassroots lobbying**. Felix holds regular email-writing and letter-writing workshops for the general public on the PauseAI US Discord ([please join!](https://discord.gg/TmpmYejE3e)) aimed at specific events, such as emailing and calling the California Assembly and Senate during the SB-1047 hearings and workshops coordinating supportive emails expressing hope about the possibility of a global treaty to pause frontier AI development. We work with SAG-AFTRA representatives to coordinate with their initiatives and add an x-risk dimension to their primarily digital identity and provenance-related concerns. 

PauseAI US is part of a number of other more speculative legal interventions to Pause AI, such as working with Gabriel Weil to develop a strict liability ballot initiative version of SB-1047 and locate funders to get it on the 2026 ballot. We are members of [Coalition for a Baruch Plan for AI](https://www.cbpai.org/) and Felix attended the UN Summit for the Future Activist Days. We hope to be able to serve as a plaintiff in lawsuits against AI companies that our attorney allies are developing, a role which very few others would be willing or able to fill. Lobbying is more of a nitty gritty approach, but **the goal of our lobbying is the same as our protesting**: to show our elected officials that cooperation to not build AGI is possible, because the will and the ways are there.

[DemocracyNext](https://demnext.org) is an international research and action institute dedicated to scaling high quality, empowered, and permanent citizens’ assemblies. Our programmes aim to achieve this through building or creating new infrastructure, institutions, innovation, impactful storytelling, and systemic change.

Across the globe, people lack agency to shape their destinies. Governance systems are failing to address hard, complex issues. And those in power are not accountable to their citizens. We want to change this.

**At DemocracyNext, we believe in a more just, joyful, and collaborative future, where everyone has meaningful power to shape their societies. We work to shift *who* has power and *how* we take decisions in government and in institutions of daily life like workplaces, schools, and museums.**

Citizens’ assemblies are brave spaces for creative problem solving, designed for exercising our collective intelligence, engaging with complexity, and finding common ground.

At their heart are three key ideas – *sortition* (selecting decision makers by lottery), *deliberation* (collectively weighing evidence for shared decisions), and *rotation* (taking turns representing, and being represented by others).

Our hypothesis is that if people have greater agency in decision making, the ripple effects contribute to a thriving, resilient society of active citizens, where people have stronger trust in one another, a meaningful sense of belonging, and are less polarised. Citizens’ assemblies lead to more legitimate and informed decisions, policies, and resource allocations.

Our three focus areas are democratic infrastructure, institutions, and innovations:

1. **Infrastructure - Building the field**: We serve as a connector of knowledge and people to help the field of democratic innovation to grow and thrive. We collect data and good practices, create resources - including our seminal 'how to' guide[Assembling an Assembly](https://assemblyguide.demnext.org/), frameworks, and guidelines, and we convene networks. We work to seed and strengthen the democratic infrastructure necessary for sustainable change, scaling the number of people and organisations with the know-how to implement and facilitate deliberative assemblies through our learning programmes and capacity building activities. 
2. **Institutions - Scaling systemic change**: We provide technical advice and expertise on the design of institutionalised Assemblies that are more than one-offs and provide support for the relational and political work to ensure change is sustainable. To us, Citizens’ Assemblies are not just ‘tools’ that should complement elections. Our work is about building new institutions. We think the architecture of democracy needs to expand to include Assemblies with real weight and power. We want to see empowered, decision-making Assemblies next. 
3. **Innovations - Enabling experimentation**: While we have evidence of ‘what works’, there are still many unanswered research questions and many innovations to be tried and tested. We are prototyping tech-enhanced deliberative assemblies. We are exploring more-than-human governance approaches. And we are expanding the core ideas of Citizens’ Assemblies into other domains beyond government.

Claudia and Ieva co-ordinated the OECD Innovative Citizen Participation Network, edited the OECD blog Participo, advised on institutionalising deliberative democracy in the Basque Country in collaboration with Arantzazulab, managed five pilot projects of citizen participation in cohesion policy supported by the European Commission, and they designed deliberative processes in Finland and Lebanon.

Hong Kong Watch defends human rights, freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Watch is a [UK registered charity](https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/charity-details/?regid=1180013&subid=0) founded in 2017, consisting of Hong Kongers and friends of Hong Kong, working closely with Hong Kong community groups in the diaspora.

We inform and educate legislators, policy-makers and the media, and raise awareness among the wider public, about the violations of human rights, basic freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong, and advocate for actions to assist Hong Kongers. ROC-DC has been building power with restaurant workers since 2009. We are a small worker-led organization that utilizes base-building, organizing and worker-led advocacy to move our mission forward. ROC-DC has been specifically equipped to support workers during crises, and have provided systems of support, training and mutual aid during the threats of Trump's first presidency, during the COVID-19 pandemic and currently under the federal occupation of Washington, DC that is putting so many of our members and restaurant workers at risk. We as a society must re-think and re-engineer whistleblowing to keep up with a world where society's power brokers in Silicon Valley and Washington, DC face little to no oversight and wield dangerous weapons against individual whistleblowers and journalists.

Psst… addresses the threat to whistleblowing by shifting it from an individual pursuit to ***collective action***. Collective action diffuses the risks associated with whistleblowing while also increasing the impact of disclosures.

The mechanism for doing so is the Psst Safe, a secure repository where insiders can record their concerns, whether big or small, in a repository while protecting their identities. Individual deposits in the repository are vetted for authenticity and analyzed to uncover patterns among deposits. Patterns are used to create complete stories and/or legal cases; depositors are given the option to be part of the collective, always with legal and safety measures in place.

ATNJ Education Fund is the premier organization in New Jersey leading the expansion of Vote By Mail and voter education.

ATNJ Education Fund’s main purpose is to provide education and awareness of the twice yearly statewide elections in New Jersey, an existing gap in public outreach to communities that both the county election boards and the state Division of Elections do not provide. We focus on the communities and groups of people living in geographic areas designated as “Hard to Count" (HTC) by the Census Bureau:  **African-American/Black, Asian, and Hispanic/Latino**. We also focus on **high school students** ages 17-18 who are automatically registered to vote upon earning their driver’s permit with the Motor Vehicle Commission. Where there are gaps in voter outreach by government agencies, we are intentional in finding solutions to fill those gaps and amplify where necessary.

But our top newsroom leaders have seen no need for a course change. In particular, they have failed to respond to the growing asymmetry between the political parties, even as one became overtly counter-majoritarian, anti-democratic, and unmoored to reality.

Press Watch agitates for change. It encourages reporters to fight disinformation more enthusiastically and effectively, especially when our democracy and people’s lives are at stake. It identifies best practices that others can emulate. It urges the reality-based parts of the industry to  explicitly condemn Fox News and other far-right propaganda outlets as disinformation operations.

Uses technology to simplify political engagement, increase voter turnout, and strengthen American democracy.

The largest nonprofit, non-partisan voting registration and get out the vote (GOTV) technology platform in America. It has registered more than 3.3 million new voters, verified 8.2 million voters’ registration status, and has helped over 30 million website users by providing registration links and deadlines, polling location details, and other essential voting information for each state. Vote.org also leverages its SMS-based GOTV program each year, targeting low-propensity voters in regularly scheduled and special elections.

To turn out the vote among young people and people of color, Vote.org partners with corporations and other organizations in the civic space, including Gannett Media Group's USA Today, Vote Save America, and The Andrew Goodman Foundation. Vote.org has also launched exciting new partnerships in 2020 with The Webby Awards, NAACP Youth Coalition, GLSEN, wikiHow, and Young Entertainment Activists. Many of their corporate partners have signed on to Vote.org's Election Day campaign, launched in 2018, which commits them to giving their employees paid time off to vote on Election Day. To date, 500 companies have signed the pledge.

Vote.org was originally founded as Long Distance Voter (LDV), which served as a comprehensive online resource for absentee ballot information. LDV had 500,000 viewers within six months of its 2008 launch, and in 2014, it was the official source of data for Google's "How to Vote" project, which received over 30 million views.

In 2016, LDV rebranded itself as Vote.org, with funding and support from the Y Combinator. That fall, Vote.org ran its first-in-nation SMS peer-to-peer voter registration drive, and on Election Day 2016, Vote.org ran the single largest non-partisan SMS GOTV drive in America, providing polling location information to over 1 million low-propensity voters.

With the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic in America, Vote.org recently added a page to its website, offering regularly updated, state-by-state information for voters whose primaries have been postponed or otherwise delayed. As the pandemic creates new barriers to safe and fair elections, Vote.org is working to keep voters engaged in the democratic process and prevent misinformation from dissuading them from participating in the 2020 election.

Vote.org's mission is to use technology to simplify political engagement, increase voter turnout, and strengthen American democracy. With its new leadership team, led by CEO Andrea Hailey, Vote.org is on track to serve 12 times the number of people it served in 2018. The organization plans to turn out more than 5 million low-propensity voters in this fall's presidential election.

**History:** Started in 2006 in 1 city with 70 volunteers & 120 beneficiaries, today, Make A Difference (MAD) is a network of over 2,000 volunteers mentoring 3200 children & youth across 18 cities, annually.

Over the last 18 years, we’ve mobilised over 20,000 volunteers who have played their part in helping India’s most vulnerable children succeed academically, socially, and professionally.

 **Vision:** Children born into intergenerational poverty are able to break the cycle in a single generation.

**Mission:** Empower communities to take radical responsibility for their most vulnerable children and ensure they get the care & support needed to break the cycle of poverty permanently in a single-generation



**Goal:**

Our goal is to eradicate poverty in our lifetime. We achieve this by building a nationwide network of empowered communities that act as safety nets and springboards for children in need of care and protection. 

Through our proven **Progression Mentoring Program**, communities can provide step-by-step guidance, empowering children to cross the life-changing **empowerment threshold of $360 (INR. 30,000) per month** and leave poverty behind, permanently.

It is a **community-powered, volunteer-driven program** for age-appropriate growth & development that enables a group of young people in the community to self organise to provide the required care, skill building and resource to the most vulnerable children in the community.

**One-on-one mentoring** by young individuals, guiding children through critical life stages, has the highest success rate in healing from **ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences)** and bridging the gap left by struggling parents.

 It’s also the fastest way for India’s vulnerable children to break free from poverty permanently. While it typically takes **7 generations** for a family to escape poverty in India, with personalised mentoring, it can be achieved in just **one generation.**



**Program Delivery:**

MAD delivers Progression Mentoring through a **Community Organising model,** empowering young leaders to mobilize community members into active citizens. Community Organisers do this by forming chapters of 200 volunteers and children. Each chapter provides weekly mentoring to 200 vulnerable children from the **age of 10 to 28 at no cost to the child.**

 Our **service-based leadership development curriculum**, led by Community Organisers (CO), guides chapter leaders in sourcing, recruiting, onboarding, managing, and retaining mentors.

MADapp is an Experiential leadership Development tool that enables a young person to pick up high value skills by setting up and running a MAD chapter.

**For over 30 years, Voices for Racial Justice's multiracial training and organizing programs have been instrumental in building a strong racial justice movement in Minnesota.** We are committed to centering BIPOC leadership, breaking down silos across social change and policy work, and creating lasting, ecosystem-wide support for racial justice organizing. Humans On The Loop is a transdisciplinary inquiry into the nature of agency in our age of automation.

In our AI-infused society, the gap between imagination and “reality” is smaller than it’s ever been — and now it’s time for humankind to graduate from asking if our dreams are possible to asking how we can dream better. This means cultivating deeper self-awareness, more discipline and humility, and a better metaphysics of technology to help us wield these new superpowers. But decades into a period of rapid information scaling, our grasp of consensus reality and executive function have eroded, causing an epistemic crisis. The wicked problems of this century require coordination at unprecedented scale, but our greatest natural resource — attention — has worn even thinner than our topsoil. How do we regenerate it and restore the faculties we need to be good stewards of this new ecology of minds?

Navigating the challenges that come with new information technologies is a group exercise and demands inherently plural approaches. The right response to tools that amplify our biases is to lean in with curiosity and play, not fearI have spent two decades studying and synthesizing  perspectives on intelligence and technology, innovation, and human-technology co-evolution…as well as testing bleeding-edge creative tools in public, helping cultivate systems literacies for navigating transformation, and fostering a massive network of mentors and collaborators with whom I share a devotion to the cultivation of a healthy Biosphere and Technosphere. As AI comes of age, this is the moment to recruit as many of them as we can into a multimodal public inquiry on wisdom and technology, power and responsibility, holistic practices for cultivating saner futures…and how we can keep Humans On The Loop and at the wheel.

It's going to be a trip — how can we make sure that it’s a good one?

This project exists to foster a renaissance of collaboration and the conditions for new ways of knowing. Its goals include to:

– Boost public discourse at the intersection of technology and wisdom
– Create a legacy of public goods that help train instruments for deepening our understanding
– Prototype and demonstrate experimental tools for thought
– Promote the adoption of reflexive AI for both private and public good
– Help map the emergent ecosystem of changemaking orgs and wise innovators
– Fertilize new narratives and strategies for navigating "wicked problems"
– Bridge domains and cultures in positive-sum collaboration

When News Decoder began in 2015, our founding belief was that young people could transcend the role of passive information consumers to become powerful knowledge producers and agents of change ready to meet these challenges. 

Over the past decade, we have demonstrated not only that this vision is possible but how it can be achieved. Our combination of journalism skills training and cross-border virtual exchange empowers young people to be informed, engaged citizens capable of reporting on their local communities and sharing their perspectives on a global stage.

Advancing racial and economic justice to ensure dignity and opportunity for low-income people and people of color.

EBC builds power with systems-impacted people to drive systems-change. Over its 27-year history, the families and communities EBC organizes with have collectively transformed the criminal justice system in California, from closing  abusive youth prisons to passing first-of-its-kind legislation to challenge racial discrimination in trials and sentencing. Building on the organizing approach of civil rights leader Ella Baker, EBC invests in the leadership of the people most impacted by racial oppression. EBC is led by systems-impacted people and implements solutions created from lived expertise. Recent California victories like the Racial Justice Act for All, the RISE Act, and the Access to Programming Act were pioneered at EBC and are poised to bring thousands home to their families. EBC also invests in leadership in its core base. For example, currently incarcerated people are most impacted – but least included – in policies for decarceration. Through EBC’s 9,000+ inside member network, currently incarcerated people weigh in on policy solutions, organize with their peers, speak out on issues impacting their lives, and get support to advocate for their freedom. Locally, in the Bay Area, EBC builds credible alternatives to prisons. Restore Oakland, EBC’s community center, models investments that return opportunity to over-criminalized neighborhoods. Here, EBC and partners offer resources like restorative justice circles, re-entry support, tenants rights tools, job training, and entrepreneurship funding that build a vibrant, prosperous community. Organizing for safety, power, freedom, and opportunity, EBC advances the self-determination of the people most impacted by the criminal justice system.

21st century movements for justice, equity and progress are fighting uphill battles — and the tech they use shouldn’t be one of them. But our organizers have not been equipped to make critical tech decisions, leaving the movement vulnerable to security threats, costly decisions and unstable tools. 

Trestle is here to help bridge the gap. 

We’re here to help get tech projects on track, protect teams and tools from threats, and ensure technology is never a barrier to victory — in ways that are accessible, culturally specific and sustainable.

Trestle Collaborative is the place for front line organizations to secure free-tech services. Since our start in 2021, we’ve worked on some of the most critical high impact issues by providing over $1.6 million in free tech services through our community of over 130+ mission-driven technologists who provide hands-on guidance to front-line organizations.

We are the women we serve. Now, GirlTrek is mobilizing this constituency for its boldest mission yet: a Care Crusade to extend Black women’s life expectancy by 10 years in a decade. These bold campaigns—scaling to 5 million members, establishing community wellness hubs “Care Villages”, training a Blue Brigade of health responders, and advancing policies to dismantle systemic barriers—will build lasting systems of care and inspire future generations.

 The Fund for Congolese Women (FFC)   supports women's grassroots organizations through financial and technical assistance.  FFC is unique - the only women-led grant-giving NGO in the entire DRC. We provide grants to local women-led organizations that are often in the most remote, difficult to reach areas.   Why? We are unshakable believers in local solutions to local issues.  We know that the brave women and girls working at the grassroots level have the solutions. We know that when women become agents of change, they benefit, their families benefit, their communities benefit. Since its inception in 2007, FFC has funded more than 386 projects throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo. We support projects focusing on eliminating sexual violence against women, delivering empowerment programs for women and girls, educating women about HIV/AIDS and reproductive health, and advocating for environmental justice and access to resources and land for women.
