Waterkeepers Iraq

Waterkeepers Iraq is an independent environmental organization based in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, dedicated to protecting rivers, wetlands, and freshwater ecosystems through science, community action, education, and advocacy.
Since becoming an independent NGO in 2014, we have worked across the Tigris basin to document environmental threats, improve water-quality monitoring, strengthen environmental governance, and empower communities to become active stewards of their local waterways. Our approach combines scientific research, citizen science, youth engagement, environmental journalism, public art, and partnerships with government institutions, universities, and civil society. We train young environmental leaders, support local volunteers in monitoring rivers and reporting pollution, organize clean-up campaigns and educational events, and produce documentaries, exhibitions, and media campaigns that raise public awareness and encourage action. By connecting local knowledge with evidence-based advocacy, Waterkeepers Iraq helps communities build resilience to climate change while protecting biodiversity and freshwater resources. Our vision is a future where healthy rivers sustain both people and nature, and where communities play a central role in safeguarding Iraq’s water heritage for future generations.
