CETI is a nonprofit org applying advanced machine learning and gentle robotics to listen to and translate whale communication. 

Founded in 2020 as a TED Audacious Project, the organization’s science team is made up of the world's leading artificial intelligence and natural language processing experts, marine biologists, cryptographers, linguists, roboticists and underwater acousticians. CETI’s research is taking place off of the island of Dominica in the Caribbean.

In the late 1960s, scientists, including Dr. Roger Payne, a principal advisor of CETI, discovered that whales sing to one another. His recordings, Songs of the Humpback Whale, sparked the “Save the Whales” movement, one of the most successful conservation initiatives in history. The campaign eventually led to the Marine Mammal Protection Act that marked the end of large-scale whaling and saved several whale populations from extinction. 

All this by just hearing the sounds of whales. Imagine what would happen if we could understand them?

WHY WHALES 
Sperm whales specifically share traits strikingly similar to humans. They live in matriarchal and multicultural societies and share dialects and strong multigenerational family bonds. Sperm whales have the largest brains of any species and have higher-level functions such as conscious thought and future planning, as well as speech and feelings of compassion, love, suffering and intuition. Their vocalizations, among the loudest animal sounds on the planet, have a Morse code-like structure that shares the hallmarks of a highly-evolved language. Our understanding of these animals and their dialects is still in its infancy. Only in the last fifteen years have we begun to learn how some of their vocalizations are used for communication.  
WHAT CETI IS DOING
CETI is:
-Developing non-invasive robotics to listen to a population of whales in the Caribbean and put their sounds into context.
-Deploying a “Core Whale Listening System,” an innovative hydrophone array, underwater robotic gliders, custom bioinspired whale tags and other technology to gently study the whales.
-Building on substantial data on the whales’ sounds, social lives, and behavior already obtained by the Dominica Sperm Whale Project. 
-Creating a bespoke, big-data pipeline to examine the recorded data and decode it using advanced machine learning, natural language processing and data science.
-Publishing a series of academic papers beginning with the CETI roadmap.
-Collaborating with the National Geographic Society, including their Exploration Technology Lab, and amplifying the project across National Geographic’s storytelling and education channels.
-Implementing community-based programs like the Dominica Marine Conservation Fellowship, a community-based 10-month multi- module training program for young Dominicans interested in marine science, that was developed in partnership with National Geographic.
-Launching various communications projects to tell CETI’s story including a public interface for the citizen science community, resources for educators and children and arts programs.

IMPACT
Now, for the first time in history, it’s possible to use artificial intelligence to identify and interpret deep structure within animal communication. Using these technologies, CETI is building on the legacy of the “Save the Whales” movement with the goal of having an impact by contributing the following:
Interspecies Communication - A new data set of unprecedented size to the rapidly expanding field of interspecies communication and a roadmap of how humans could translate the communication of any other species
Marine Biology - A substantive contribution to the field of whale research within marine biology that opens gateways for future research initiatives. 
Policy - New information about whales that can bolster policy efforts to protect marine mammals and ocean habitats. Policy advances in this area are crucial as six out of the 13 “great” whale species (the largest whales) are still endangered (World Wildlife Federation). To ensure impact in this area, CETI plans to build out policy campaigns and initiatives. 
Perspective - It is widely endorsed that connectivity with nature can improve mental health. By sharing its journey and findings with the public, CETI hopes to contribute to a feeling of increased wonder and connectedness to whales and the ocean that can inspire action. CETI will build out arts and childrens’ initiatives in support of this impact goal.
Conservation - CETI’s first phase of research is taking place in Dominica in the Caribbean, a region that is one of the world’s greatest centers of diversity. By carrying out its research in partnership with local stakeholders, CETI hopes to contribute to regionally-led research and conservation efforts.

HOW CETI IS SUPPORTING DOMINICA
-CETI’s capacity-building initiative, Dominica Marine Conservation Fellowship is a 10-month, nine module training program for young Dominicans interested in marine science) in partnership with National Geographic.  The program has three 2022/2023 fellows and partnerships with the Dominica National Youth Council, Dominica State College and Dominica’s Ministry of Education. The program’s curriculum (co-created with National Geographic) includes modules on marine science, scientific research/techniques, water and vessel skills and storytelling and leadership among other topics.
-All research and findings by CETI in Dominica are all open-source and will be available for Dominica. The organization’s sailing research vessel (CETI-1), a Rigid Inflatable Boat (CETI-2) and Dominican made boat (CETI-3) are in operation in Dominican waters; these boats along with other CETI equipment will be donated to the local entity at the completion of the project.
-A temporary field station has been established in Dominica and has the capacity to host 10-12 researchers, fellows and students. In the long-term, CETI plans to build a permanent field station in Dominica 
-In 2023, CETI will continue local engagement and presentations with primary and secondary schools, development of video content for use in classrooms, collaborations with local artists and collaborations with local stakeholders such as marine and dive operators, civil society organizations and schools.

Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest provides lifetime quality care for chimpanzees and works to educate the public about the plight of primates worldwide. The sanctuary is located on 90 acres of  farm and forested land in the Cascade mountains, 90 miles east of Seattle. CSNW is one of only a handful of sanctuaries in the country that cares for chimpanzees.

The organization was founded in 2003 to provide sanctuary for chimpanzees discarded from the entertainment and biomedical testing industries. On June 13, 2008, Annie, Burrito, Foxie, Jamie, Jody, Missy, and Negra arrived from a private biomedical facility in Pennsylvania. Some of the chimpanzees were kept as pets and used in entertainment when they were young. Some of them were captured in Africa as infants. All of them were used by the biomedical research industry to test hepatitis vaccines. Most of the females were also used as breeders during their years in labs and their babies were taken from them shortly after birth.

In 2019, three more chimpanzees, Honey B, Mave, and Willy B, were added to the sanctuary from Wildlife Waystation, a wild animal shelter outside of Los Angeles that closed its doors after more than 40 years. In 2021, we welcomed Cy, Dora, Gordo, Lucky, Rayne, and Terry (The Lucky Six) from Wildlife Waystation. All nine of the most recently added chimpanzees also began their lives in the biomedical research industry.

The sanctuary also cares for three rescued cows and a steer who provide grazing services in exchange for our affection and occasional treats.

Animal Ethics provides information and promote debate about issues in animal ethics, sentience, animal interests and speciesism.

Detailed information on the data regarding the situation of nonhuman animals as well as on the arguments to defend animals is not always available, and we intend to provide it to all those who want to help them. In addition, we do outreach work ourselves aimed not at stopping particular ways in which animals are harmed (which other organizations are already addressing), but at achieving a shift in attitudes towards speciesism.

Our work deals with the way nonhuman animals are considered in everyday life, as well as how they are considered in fields that affect human attitudes and activities that are relevant to animals. These include academia, scientific fields, and the law. We look at the way nonhuman animals are impacted by current human activities, and how they might be impacted by future planned or unplanned human activities. This involves not only the ways we might harm them, but also how we might help them even when the cause of their plight is not human action.

The field of animal ethics deals with why we should take nonhuman animals into consideration in our moral decisions, and the ways in which we should. This has tremendously relevant practical consequences. Many people currently have little regard for nonhuman animals. But more often, people do give some consideration to the interests of animals, but still have a discriminatory attitude towards them. We can morally consider someone but still discriminate against them in a way that harms them. We can also discriminate against them in ways that don’t harm them at all, such as by helping some individuals more than we help others, for reasons that are unfair. Animal ethics as a field addresses these questions, and it is our aim to deal with them.

Native Animal Rescue’s primary purpose is the rescue, treatment and rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned wildlife, with the ultimate goal being release back to the wild. Additionally, we are committed to educating the general public in the appreciation of and the regard for challenges created by the interaction between people and wildlife and wildlife’s decreasing habitat.

Pollinate minds and convey the importance of saving wild honey bees from extinction by integrating them into urban environments.

The mission to save honey bees from extinction–CEO Walter Schumacher’s professed goal–originated from a conversation in 2006. Walter, also known fondly as the “Bee-Czar”, was intrigued when a friend of his explained that the key to saving the world was to save the honey bee. From that point on, Walter took every step towards figuring out how to save bees from unwanted places without endangering their lives. 

In late 2006, Walter created the Central Texas Bee Rescue and personally opened his own property to the bees of local citizens seeking an eco-friendly solution to their unwanted honey bee infestation or swarm issues. Since Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) had not been diagnosed by that time, there were still many people baffled at why someone, such as Walter, would get in a bee suit in 110 index heat during the summer just to save some pesky wild bees. Yet, through working with wild bees, and beginning to understand the depth of their beauty, their intelligence, and their keystone role in our ecosystem, Walter developed an unbreakable bond with the honey bee. He even realized that the bee suits in the dead heat would kill him before bees did, so he eventually just stopped wearing one altogether! (Please note we do not advise that!).

Knowing the magnitude of the role that wild honey bees play in our eco-system, Walter was baffled by why traditional beekeepers continued to kill off unwanted infestations or swarms rather than to remove and relocate the bees. It was this line of thinking that led Walter to the realization that the key to saving the wild bees, was to integrate bees, and beekeeping into urban environments. This epiphany directed him to do even more about the inevitable extinction of one of the worlds most important pollinators and in 2012, The American Honey Bee Protection Agency (AHBPA) was formed. 

That same year, AHBPA was instrumental, working alongside Texas lawmakers, in passing an ordinance to provide for the relocation of wild or abandoned bees that do not threaten human or animal health or interfere with the normal use or enjoyment of public or private property. Additionally, in 2015, AHBPA worked diligently during the legislative session to help pass the statewide resolution making the western honey bee the state pollinator of Texas, an overdue honor, which AHBPA hopes will bring more awareness to the importance of bees in the state.

The American Honey Bee Protection Agency has continued the work of bee rescue and relocation, providing wild bees to residential and commercial clientele, pushing for ordinances and legislation that better protect the precious honey bee, and developing programs that integrate wild bees in urban contexts.

Sweet Binks focuses on wildlife rehabilitation in northern Rhode Island.  We have a special facility equipped to handle most wildlife cases and are licensed by RI DEM (state) and hold a (federal) USFWS Migratory Bird Permit. Our goal is to help offset the number of human inflicted injured/orphaned wildlife (cars, lawnmowers, outdoor cats/dogs, glue traps etc.) or assist in natural incidents (wind storms, flooding, excessive heat, etc.) Sweet Binks is a long time rescue, established in 2002 and has assisted with thousands of animals and assists hundreds of animals every year.  We specialize with fawns, all bird species and skunks and assist approximately 90 species of wildlife each year.  We are often building new enclosures and pride ourselves on the best possibly care for best possible outcomes and successful releases.

Iwokrama Friends - USA supports the rainforest conservation work of the Iwokrama International Centre in Guyana, South America.

Iwokrama Friends USA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2004 in the USA to help protect the Iwokrama rainforest. We partner with individuals, foundations, and businesses to help support the Iwokrama International Centre in Guyana, South America – one of the four remaining intact rain forests in the world. 

The Iwokrama Forest is a unique reserve of 371,680 hectares (almost 1 million acres) of protected rainforest located in the center of Guyana in South America. It is one of the four remaining intact rainforests in the world. It is home to remarkable biodiversity, mitigates droughts and floods, and supports climate stabilization. The forest also provides food, shelter, timber, and materials for handicrafts and medicines. 

The Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development was established in 1996 by a joint agreement between the Government of Guyana and the Commonwealth Secretariat to manage the Iwokrama Forest, a unique reserve of 371,680 hectares of rainforest. Its mission is to promote the conservation and equitable use of tropical rainforests in a manner that will lead to lasting ecological, economic and social benefits to the people of Guyana and to the world in general, by undertaking research, training, and the development and dissemination of technologies.

We have a comprehensive approach to bonobo conservation. We're in this for the long haul.

--We rescue endangered bonobos that have been orphaned by the illegal trade in wildlife.
We give them essential care and sanctuary as long as needed, and then, when possible, release them back to the rainforest.

--We partner with and support Congolese communities near bonobo habitat to save rainforests. We manage and protect the forest preserve, ensuring wildlife and their rainforest home are protected for the long term.

​--We raise global and local awareness of endangered bonobos and the root causes that threaten their survival. We work with local and international authorities to uphold and strengthen the laws supporting endangered wildlife.

Advocates for Snake Preservation is a charity committed to changing how people view and treat snakes. Our mission: To use science, education, and advocacy to promote compassionate conservation and coexistence with snakes. As important predators and prey, snakes are an essential part of a vibrant, functioning planet, but negative attitudes about snakes may be the biggest barrier to their conservation. 

We provide solutions to everyday human-snake conflicts that sometimes end badly for people and often prove fatal for snakes. We make snakes more familiar and less scary by busting myths and misconceptions, illustrating lesser-known and appealing behaviors like parental care, and sharing stories of individual snakes to show what they’re really like. Often this information is enough for people to welcome their snake neighbors and appreciate, rather than fear, their encounters. But we also recommend yard and human behavior modifications to reduce human-snake conflicts and make coexistence with venomous snakes safer.

While education and changing attitudes are the heart of our work, we also take action and advocate on urgent issues. Since our founding in 2014, ASP:
•	Changed the international conversation on rattlesnake roundups;
•	Killed the Arizona snake-shooting bill;
•	Ensured conservation would be driven by science rather than fear in Massachusetts;
•	Reached tens of thousands of people online with our multimedia snake stories; and
•	Launched Living With Snakes: safe, sustainable solutions to human-snake conflict.

Our core values include leave no trace, waste reduction, and responsible waste management. Education is key for a better tomorrow!

Litter Clean-ups: Our community clean-ups provide participants the resources needed to safely remove litter from urban, suburban, and rural areas around Chattanooga on a monthly basis. Since beginning our program in 2017, we've removed 1.6 pounds of litter from the region!  

Education: Presentations and interactive activities can be scheduled for all age groups that focus on waste reduction, responsible waste diversion, and sustainable living tips. 

Litter Stations: Over 50 litter stations are located around Chattanooga, stocked with biodegradable dog waste and litter bags, enabling community members to remove litter while recreating.

One Rake At A Time Inc is a nonprofit organization focused on preserving, protecting, and improving environment. It is based in Dunnellon, FL. It received its nonprofit status in 2015.

Hydrilla has invaded the beautiful Rainbow river.

Hydrilla is destroying the habitat where the otters live.

Hydrilla is here because of us, it is a plant from south east Asia that was brought in to be used in small aquarium tanks years ago. Hydrilla escaped and is now invading our lakes, springs, and rivers.

Hydrilla grows so fast that it crowds out and suffocates all the other native plants.

Hydrilla is very invasive and wants to dominate the entire ecosystems in our lakes rivers and springs we cant let it win.

The Beautiful Rainbow river was invaded by hydrilla years ago. Hydrilla can grow up to 2 inches a day in the summer months. Otters, people and other aquatic animals can not swim thru the big massive dense mats of Hydrilla.

Every year there is more Hydrilla and less native eelgrass. We want native eelgrass, it is good, growing on the bottom it create a great home for not only otters, but everything else.

The Hydrilla becomes so dense that it slows down the water. Less current means better environment for toxic Lyngbya algae to grow. We are seeing Lyngbya in parts to the river already.

Every year Hydrilla becomes so bad that the State has no choice but to spray the Hydrilla with herbicide, or it will choke the river to death with in a years time. The state has been spraying Hydrilla for at least the last 30 years on a regular basis.

After the Hydrilla is treated with the herbicide Endothol it starts to die back slowly over the next 30 to 60 days. It sheds its leaves slowly creating silt that sinks to the bottom. As the hydrilla dies it covers the bottom helping suffocate any eel grass struggling to survive.

The next generation of Hydrilla will emerge after about 6 months and feed on all this left over silt, muck, and debris growing again. It is a viscous cycle, and after 30 years, the rivers needs a good cleaning.

As a good farmer will first prepare their field before planting, so must we prepare the bottom of the river before planting. We need to remove the Hydrilla, vacuum up the silt and muck so we can see the natural bottom again, and then we can replant eel grass.

If given a fair chance, the eel grass will once again become the dominate SAV on the bottom of the river. When eel grass gets it roots down deep into the natural bottom it will grow and prosper, crowding out the Hydrilla by shading it from sunlight with its thick blades of grass.

This has been proven to work by the results of the Kings Bay Restoration project in Crystal River. This will bring back the stories of yesteryear, crystal clear water with fields of eel grasses blowing in the currents and a river full of happy people and otters.

This is the beginning of a 5 year project to clean up and restore the Rainbow river and with a vow to maintain it once it is restored again so herbicide use is no longer needed.

Please help us, we have a proven plan and just need money to hire an experienced contractor to vacuum up all the silt and muck and plant eel grass.

The Bronze Chapter is a Black woman founded and led 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for underrepresented communities of color experience nature and the natural world in ways that lead to curiosity, joy, deep listening, and life-long learning about wild spaces and environment. 

Through cultivating connections with nature and outdoor spaces, we hope to instigate discovery, imagination, creativity, and wonder that may inspire some to be future environmental scientists, outdoor industry educators, climate researchers, teachers, rangers, artists, trip leaders, wildlife or marine biologists, musicians, and compassionate policy makers committed to protecting where the wild things are.

The construct of racism limited access to land, parks, pools, and beaches. Limited access means limited opportunities for learning. Our programs support the movement towards a more racially-just outdoors and help Community get back outside to rest, play, and learn. Community is centered in outdoor skill sharing, knowledge sharing, and recreation. Every program supports another, creating layers of opportunity to learn how to be safe and responsible friends of nature.

We view camping as a gateway activity that opens doors to the outdoors. Learning to camp well in a variety of seasons and terrain allows us to safely sustain ourselves outside overnight. When we’re able to do that, we can travel and experience the world in nearly infinite ways. Basic camping skills easily translate to backpacking, kayak camping, bicycle and motorcycle camping, etc.

We view safety as an essential element of outdoor recreation. Offering wilderness first aid certification and self-defense for the outdoors and beyond help us keep ourselves safe and provide aid to others who may need assistance.

We support families and increase access to the health, physical, cultural, and inspirational benefits of the outdoors by decreasing barriers that block us from it.

Although Black and brown people helped build much of the infrastructure of parks and public lands, outdoor leisure was not made or meant for our use or enjoyment. Until the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, Black people in many states were legally barred and/or subject to segregation at state and national parks and on other public lands. That was just 55 years ago. This is current history.

RSCF employs the "Flagship Species" concept to identify and conserve high-profile, priority species in order to leverage protection for the ecosystems they represent.

RSCF's South Florida facility houses critically endangered species. We specialize in creating breeding and recovery strategies for some of the world's most vulnerable species and ecosystems. From captive breeding and reintroduction to land management and environmental policy, RSCF's teams of biologists, students and animal care specialists create targeted strategies and solutions to protect and preserve wildlife and wild places. Our current main mission is supporting Upemba National Park in DRC. This is one of the oldest and largest African wilderness at 13.000 KM2 (1.3 M ha) with an outstanding biodiversity that has lived in harmony for millions of years, until now. 

The park is facing some critical challenges:

• The DRC Government launched a oil and gas exploration rights auction in August 2022 (https://wapo.st/3zV59Bw) that covers most of the park! Check the "Upemba" block here: https://bit.ly/oilblocks. This activity would undoubtedly destroy its ecosystem and pollute the waters of the lufira basin (https://bit.ly/lufirabasin) an internationally recognized wetland and river with endemic species that supply water to most DRC and Africa! 

• The DRC Government approved in July 2022 a project for the construction of the Sombwe Dam (https://bit.ly/articledam) in the park itself. This also constitutes a major threat to the park's ecosystem.

• Predatory poaching, illegal mining and lodging. These activities are carried out by multiple actors that include armed militias, local communities for subsistence and organized mafias from abroad. Their goal is to finance their criminal activities obtaining ivory from the elephants, coltan (that mineral on your phone), Copper, Tin and many other minerals.

• Generalised corruption from the political class further difficult the labor done on the field.

Our plans include:

• Launch and fund regenerative finance (ReFi) communities and projects based on web3 that provide a sustainable income for the stedwards of nature.

• Run awareness campaigns that involve the international, national and local communities and advocate from the top (diplomacy) and the bottom (grassroots movements).

• Run sustainable development projects that allow supporting the local communities that live in poverty.

• Fund to a proper level all the conservation activities that are already taking place.

• Provide a decent income to the hundreds of rangers that protect the park and risk their lives for nature.

Safe In Austin Rescue Ranch is a sanctuary that rescues animals from severe abuse or neglect.

Our animals provide healing and hope to trauma, at-risk, and/or special needs people, these are the animals who triumph and inspire world-wide.

Safe in Austin's story began with a Great Pyrenees appropriately named, "Angel". 

Our family had always loved animals, but it wasn't until a discounted service dog Angel joined our family, that we would see just how magically an animal could transform lives.

WMEAC is a nonprofit environmental organization based in West Michigan.  It received its nonprofit status in 1971.

WMEAC’s mission is to work collaboratively alongside our diverse community to educate, engage, and advocate for environmental values, environmental and climate justice, and a healthy and resilient community for all. Our service area includes the eight-county West Michigan region: Allegan, Barry, Ionia, Kent, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo and Ottawa, with primary emphasis on the Grand Rapids, Holland and Muskegon metropolitan areas.

WMEAC's solutions lie in student and community environmental education - particularly around water, zero waste and energy; helping community members and municipalities achieve more sustainable practices around energy and water; engaging communities in climate education and action; and in supporting clean water for all.

Water is particularly important in the Great Lakes State. We are stewards of 20% of the earth's surface fresh water.  WMEAC works to minimize stormwater pollution (the biggest single factor in water pollution), advocate for the identification and cleanup of PFAs and other water pollutants, and work with environmental organizations from across the Great Lakes Basin to work to close down oil pipelines, such as Line 5 and to stop water theft by large bottling companies.

WMEAC also acknowledges that the environmental movement has traditionally been an exclusive movement that has caused harm to people of color. Our goals is to build a diverse, inclusive, and robust community prepared to tackle current environmental issues that resonate with all of our community. This includes WMEAC’s work with water protection and climate resilience, which intersect directly with environmental justice.
