Science & Technology

For a decade, the Sena Institute of Technology Foundation (SITF) has been quietly transforming the research landscape of West Africa one discovery, one scholar, and one community at a time. As the fundraising and grant-making arm of Sena Institute of Technology Ghana, SITF has mobilized over $1.5 million in direct grants, laboratory equipment, and infrastructure, enabling researchers to document more than 812 species across marine, plant, and insect ecosystems, identify two promising antimicrobial plant compounds with drug discovery potential, and lay the groundwork for a women's health biobank by documenting uterine fibroids.

Through a powerful train-the-trainer model, our investments have reached over 3,150 people including 100+ undergraduate researchers, 20 university lecturers, 30 high school tutors, and 3,000+ secondary school students now inspired to pursue STEM careers. Every gift to SITF is not simply a donation, it is a multiplier, rippling outward through classrooms, laboratories, and communities across Ghana and beyond. As we look to the next decade, we invite visionary donors and philanthropists to stand with us in building Sena Institute of Technology Ghana into the leading research and innovation hub of West Africa and a voice for African science on the world stage.

Raising funds for SIT institutional accreditation process

The Sena Institute of Technology (SIT) has spent over a decade establishing itself as a research-first institution, dedicating approximately 80% of its efforts to research and 20% to training. This intentional focus has enabled the institute to build strong expertise in areas such as biodiversity, marine science, fibroid research, and drug discovery, making it one of the few institutions in Ghana actively translating scientific research into practical solutions. Over time, SIT has become a hub for experimentation and applied innovation, attracting students from across the country for hands-on training. However, a structural gap persists: many students are unable to continue their research after leaving SIT due to limited resources and mentorship in their home institutions, leading to abandoned ideas and stalled discoveries. Accreditation is positioned as a critical solution to provide continuity and sustain research development. The transition to an accredited institution will preserve SIT’s research-driven identity while introducing structured pathways for growth and impact. The institute will maintain its 80/20 research-to-teaching balance and continue focusing on its core scientific areas. At the same time, it will begin offering four-year degree programs in fields such as biotechnology, pharmaceutical sciences, and bioengineering, supported by a lean faculty structure and phased infrastructure development. SIT’s unique position as a private, research-focused biotechnology center in Ghana allows it to operate with agility while maintaining strong connections to both national priorities and global scientific networks. Through partnerships with leading universities and research institutions, as well as support from international funders, SIT has built a model that combines global expertise with local capacity building. Accreditation represents a significant step toward scaling SIT’s impact and strengthening Ghana’s scientific ecosystem. With a practical and achievable pathway to accreditation, the institute can expand without excessive capital investment while maintaining financial sustainability through diversified revenue streams such as tuition, grants, and research services. This transition will enable SIT to retain talent, support continuous research development, and accelerate the translation of ideas into real-world applications. Ultimately, the institute aims to evolve into a national center for biotechnology and a continental model for research-driven education, building on a decade of proven success to create a sustainable system for innovation, talent development, and scientific advancement.
