This approach has earned ALI widespread recognition, including a 2024 Top Charity recommendation from Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE). This endorsement solidifies ALI’s position as one of the most effective organizations in the world advancing aquatic animal welfare.

CETI is a nonprofit org applying advanced machine learning and gentle robotics to listen to and translate whale communication. 

Founded in 2020 as a TED Audacious Project, the organization’s science team is made up of the world's leading artificial intelligence and natural language processing experts, marine biologists, cryptographers, linguists, roboticists and underwater acousticians. CETI’s research is taking place off of the island of Dominica in the Caribbean.

In the late 1960s, scientists, including Dr. Roger Payne, a principal advisor of CETI, discovered that whales sing to one another. His recordings, Songs of the Humpback Whale, sparked the “Save the Whales” movement, one of the most successful conservation initiatives in history. The campaign eventually led to the Marine Mammal Protection Act that marked the end of large-scale whaling and saved several whale populations from extinction. 

All this by just hearing the sounds of whales. Imagine what would happen if we could understand them?

WHY WHALES 
Sperm whales specifically share traits strikingly similar to humans. They live in matriarchal and multicultural societies and share dialects and strong multigenerational family bonds. Sperm whales have the largest brains of any species and have higher-level functions such as conscious thought and future planning, as well as speech and feelings of compassion, love, suffering and intuition. Their vocalizations, among the loudest animal sounds on the planet, have a Morse code-like structure that shares the hallmarks of a highly-evolved language. Our understanding of these animals and their dialects is still in its infancy. Only in the last fifteen years have we begun to learn how some of their vocalizations are used for communication.  
WHAT CETI IS DOING
CETI is:
-Developing non-invasive robotics to listen to a population of whales in the Caribbean and put their sounds into context.
-Deploying a “Core Whale Listening System,” an innovative hydrophone array, underwater robotic gliders, custom bioinspired whale tags and other technology to gently study the whales.
-Building on substantial data on the whales’ sounds, social lives, and behavior already obtained by the Dominica Sperm Whale Project. 
-Creating a bespoke, big-data pipeline to examine the recorded data and decode it using advanced machine learning, natural language processing and data science.
-Publishing a series of academic papers beginning with the CETI roadmap.
-Collaborating with the National Geographic Society, including their Exploration Technology Lab, and amplifying the project across National Geographic’s storytelling and education channels.
-Implementing community-based programs like the Dominica Marine Conservation Fellowship, a community-based 10-month multi- module training program for young Dominicans interested in marine science, that was developed in partnership with National Geographic.
-Launching various communications projects to tell CETI’s story including a public interface for the citizen science community, resources for educators and children and arts programs.

IMPACT
Now, for the first time in history, it’s possible to use artificial intelligence to identify and interpret deep structure within animal communication. Using these technologies, CETI is building on the legacy of the “Save the Whales” movement with the goal of having an impact by contributing the following:
Interspecies Communication - A new data set of unprecedented size to the rapidly expanding field of interspecies communication and a roadmap of how humans could translate the communication of any other species
Marine Biology - A substantive contribution to the field of whale research within marine biology that opens gateways for future research initiatives. 
Policy - New information about whales that can bolster policy efforts to protect marine mammals and ocean habitats. Policy advances in this area are crucial as six out of the 13 “great” whale species (the largest whales) are still endangered (World Wildlife Federation). To ensure impact in this area, CETI plans to build out policy campaigns and initiatives. 
Perspective - It is widely endorsed that connectivity with nature can improve mental health. By sharing its journey and findings with the public, CETI hopes to contribute to a feeling of increased wonder and connectedness to whales and the ocean that can inspire action. CETI will build out arts and childrens’ initiatives in support of this impact goal.
Conservation - CETI’s first phase of research is taking place in Dominica in the Caribbean, a region that is one of the world’s greatest centers of diversity. By carrying out its research in partnership with local stakeholders, CETI hopes to contribute to regionally-led research and conservation efforts.

HOW CETI IS SUPPORTING DOMINICA
-CETI’s capacity-building initiative, Dominica Marine Conservation Fellowship is a 10-month, nine module training program for young Dominicans interested in marine science) in partnership with National Geographic.  The program has three 2022/2023 fellows and partnerships with the Dominica National Youth Council, Dominica State College and Dominica’s Ministry of Education. The program’s curriculum (co-created with National Geographic) includes modules on marine science, scientific research/techniques, water and vessel skills and storytelling and leadership among other topics.
-All research and findings by CETI in Dominica are all open-source and will be available for Dominica. The organization’s sailing research vessel (CETI-1), a Rigid Inflatable Boat (CETI-2) and Dominican made boat (CETI-3) are in operation in Dominican waters; these boats along with other CETI equipment will be donated to the local entity at the completion of the project.
-A temporary field station has been established in Dominica and has the capacity to host 10-12 researchers, fellows and students. In the long-term, CETI plans to build a permanent field station in Dominica 
-In 2023, CETI will continue local engagement and presentations with primary and secondary schools, development of video content for use in classrooms, collaborations with local artists and collaborations with local stakeholders such as marine and dive operators, civil society organizations and schools.

We develop community-led, circular solutions to end plastic pollution in remote coastal areas, grounded in local heritage.

We are an East African circular economy movement that in 2018 built the world’s first 100% recycled plastic sailing dhow.  Built from 10 tonnes of beach plastic, it was covered in 30,000 pieces of discarded flipflops collected from Kenyas beaches, hence its name 'The Flipflopi'. 

We employ a “full-systems” approach to beating plastic pollution through 

(1) education and awareness campaigns, 

(2) waste-plastic innovation rooted in heritage, and 

(3) influencing legislative change to ban single-use plastics.

](https://youtu.be/RjVd7RR\_vPs?si=5XrC37OrODfvgnZJ)The 2019 Lamu to Zanzibar expedition, conducted in partnership with UN Environment, brought international media attention - 890 million people saw our message, we hosted the presidents and government ministers on the boat, and played a central role in national plastic bag bans that came into effect in both Kenya and Tanzania shortly after our campaign.

In 2020 Flipflopi Co-founder was awarded Kenya’s highest civilian honour for his contribution to preserving Kenya's Swahili culture and his environmental campaigning.  

In 2022, Flipflopi was awarded the FCDO’s prestigious SMEP Grant to tackle marine ecosystem health challenges which led to the creation of an innovative community-centered programme that is ‘closing the loop’ on waste plastic in the Lamu Archipelago (on the coast of northern Kenya) by combining indigenous knowledge of boatbuilding with modern innovation.  In a 24 month perirod we have collected 288 tonnes of plastic from the enviroment within the Lamu region. 

In 2022 we set up a Heritage Boat Building centre that runs pioneering classes teaching Dhow building and traditional craftsmanship to mixed gender classes of young people from Lamu County.  Students on these 12 week courses have built everything from ornately carved traditional Lamu chairs to Swahili Dhows – all from recycled plastic lumber instead of wood.  

In 2023, The Flipflopi team met UK Monarch King Charles whilst on a visit to Kenya, presenting him with an elegant traditional Swahili throne made entirely from recycled beach plastic.  It made headlines around the world. 

To date Flipflopi activity has principally taken place within Kenya, and to a lesser extent, in neighbouring countries Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda.  In 2025 we are turning our attention to globally scaling the many valuable lessons we have learned about how to create a circular economy for plastic waste.

In 2025 we begin our most ambitious campaign yet – first we will construct a 120 tonne, 24 metre long traditional Lamu Dhow (again, built entirely from recycled plastic) and then we embark on a global expedition that will convene the action we need globally to see a WORLD WITHOUT SINGLE USE PLASTIC.

Indigenous people are all too often faced with the dilemma of choosing between protecting their precious natural resources, and economic development. Seacology searches for win-win situations where both the local environment is protected and islanders receive some tangible benefit for doing so.   In Falealupo, Samoa, Seacology built a critically needed school in exchange for the establishment of a 30,000-acre forest reserve. In Vuna Village, Fiji, Seacology is constructing a kindergarten in exchange for the establishment of a 4,752-acre forest preserve and two marine protected areas totaling 3,010 acres.   Because we work closely with islanders right from the beginning, our projects enjoy strong local support and consequently lead to long-term benefits. Our ever-expanding list of projects shows that we are truly making a difference in protecting threatened island biodiversity throughout the world.

Working on improving the lives of farmed fish, a neglected problem with enormous scale, in the Philippines and Vietnam

Around **4,000 fish are killed in industrial farms every second** and 73-180 billion fish are being farmed at any given time. There’s an [abundence of evidence](https://www.canva.com/link?target=https%3A%2F%2Fpmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2Farticles%2FPMC9100576%2F&design=DAGj7Qj3OhY&utl=h29e626b61a&accessRole=owner&linkSource=document) that fish are sentient and experience pain, meaning that farmed fish are suffering at an unfathomable scale, particularly in Asia which farms 90% of the world’s farmed fish. This is [twice the number of fish](https://https://animalcharityevaluators.org/charity-reviews/causes-we-consider/#farmed-animals) as there are land-based farmed animals worldwide. 

Despite this enormous scale of suffering, **farmed fish welfare receives virtually no attention or resources**—especially in Asia where conditions are often severe and regulations minimal.

**Scale Welfare is working to find solutions that actually work.** We're conducting rigorous field studies in the Philippines and Vietnam to test multiple intervention approaches and identify the most scalable and cost-effective ways to improve farmed fish welfare.

Scale Welfare was **incubated through Ambitious Impact's Charity Incubation Program**, which helped us develop our evidence-based approach to this neglected cause area.

Our research will determine which interventions- whether farmer training, improved systems, or policy changes—can create the greatest impact. **Once we identify what works, we'll pilot and scale these solutions** to improve conditions for millions, potentially billions, of farmed fish.

The International Conservation Fund of Canada (ICFC) was founded in 2007 to support conservation in the tropics and other priority areas in Latin America, Asia and Africa.  Our mission is to conserve the world's irreplaceable biodiversity.  Our work provides striking co-benefits in climate mitigation and adaptation and benefits for local and Indigenous communities (livelihoods, environmental, and social benefits).

ICFC finds opportunities for outstanding conservation returns and partners with capable local conservation organizations.  Our field partners know best what needs doing and how to go about it.  They excel at engaging local communities and government relations.  Our work is science based, and the collective experience of our small staff adds value.

ICFC has the capacity to quickly expand its work to take advantage of excellent opportunities in the more than 30 countries in which we work.  With your help, we can do more. In one of the world’s most important conservation efforts, ICFC works with the Kayapo Indigenous people to protect an area of the Brazilian Amazon larger than almost half the world’s countries.  We conserve large (hundreds/thousands of square kilometers) protected areas in Peru, Costa Rica, Kenya and elsewhere and have participated in land acquisitions for more than a dozen private reserves of high conservation value.  In Cambodia we have shown that marine protected areas can restore fisheries and the marine ecosystem.  We have been instrumental in securing a future for several endangered species; our projects protect hundreds of officially threatened species; and we’re safeguarding important wintering sites of Canada’s shorebirds.

**Why the tropics?**  Tropical nature has astonishing biodiversity—the Amazon alone is home to 7,000 tree species (vs. 180 species indigenous to Canada) and a single rainforest reserve in Peru has more bird species than the entire United States. Tropical forests are crucial for addressing climate change, and they generate rainfall and supply water for agriculture and other human needs.  Coastal ecosystems prevent storm damage and are vital to fisheries.  Canada's migratory species depend on tropical wintering areas.  Yet tropical ecosystems are being lost and degraded (95% of deforestation is happening in the tropics).  Conservation works but it is under-funded.

**AWARDS & RECOGNITION**:  ICFC was the top ranked conservation charity in Canada in the Financial Post’s 2017 charity ratings (the last done by FP); is rated five out of five stars by Charity Intelligence Canada; and was a winner of the Canadian Museum of Nature’s 2020 Nature Inspiration Awards.  Our Mali Elephant Project was awarded the prestigious Equator Prize in 2017 by the United Nations. Sea otters hold deep cultural significance for Oregon’s coastal tribes, a legacy disrupted by their elimination during the 19th-century fur trade. It’s time to right this historical wrong and honor their place in tribal heritage.

Coral Gardeners began as a small band of young Tahitian surfers and divers who witnessed firsthand the rapid degradation of their local reef in Mo’orea, French Polynesia. Today, under the leadership of talented visionary and founder Titouan Bernicot, we are now an organization of more than 80 scientists, engineers, creators, entrepreneurs, and advocates dedicated to protecting the world’s coral from our rapidly changing climate. To date we have planted more than 166,000 corals and engaged with millions of people around the world. The cornerstone of our work takes place underwater, where we nurture the growth of coral fragments in nurseries that are then planted back onto the reef. **Our mission is to save the world's coral reefs.**

Coral reefs support over 500 million people around the world by providing food, income, coastal protection, and more. They provide over $375 billion per year in goods and services. And despite only covering 0.1% of the earth’s surface, they contain the highest number of species of any ecosystem besides rainforests.

We work at local, regional, and global levels to keep coral reefs healthy, so they can adapt to climate change and survive for generations to come. As one of the largest global NGOs focused exclusively on protecting coral reefs, the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) has used cutting-edge science and community engagement for more than 30 years to reduce direct threats to reefs and to promote scalable and effective solutions for their protection.

**Our Programs**

***Western Caribbean***: We partner with local communities to reduce local threats to reefs, including overfishing and wastewater pollution, and build regional collaborations.

***Hawaiian Islands***: We demonstrate how to use native species to stabilize sediment on land before it enters the ocean, and we support the state’s goal to transition away from ineffective wastewater treatment systems.

***Global Conservation Science***: We develop conservation resources based on innovative science and give conservation practitioners around the world easy ways to incorporate evolution into MPA network planning.

To create the conditions in which corals can adapt to climate change, we work at three different scales:

**Local**
We keep corals healthy so they can adapt to their changing environment by partnering with communities who depend on coral reefs for food and income, and working with them to effectively address local stressors, such as overfishing and land-based pollution.

**Regional**
We protect connected areas of reef to allow evolutionary adaptation to occur through the movement of coral larvae by ensuring that marine spatial planning efforts protect the diversity required to fuel evolution, and by establishing collaborations to build momentum to address key threats.

**Global**
We ensure conservation planning around the world protects the diversity of corals required for evolutionary adaptation by building alliances across the conservation community and providing tools and guidance that can help others implement adaptation-smart conservation.







Coral Reef Alliance

Clean Oceans International is a nonprofit organization focused on science, education, and technology based in Santa Cruz, CA. 

COI is a California 501c3 environmental non-profit with a mission of reducing ocean plastic pollution through Research, Innovation, and Direct Action. Through our Environmental Pollution Assessment Program (EPAP), communities learn a simple process to track changes in local plastic pollution. This data serves as a benchmark to evaluate the impact of mitigation initiatives and effect policy change. Additionally, we are actively engaged in introducing affordable and customized Portable Plastic Waste Conversion (PPWC) systems as part of our global initiative to provide local communities with effective plastic recycling solutions. Our current project is setting up a demonstration PPWC system for Santa Cruz, CA to illustrate PPWC capabilities to Silicon Valley tech and philanthropic communities.

Clean Oceans International

Pure Ocean  is an NGO based in France acting at the international level. Pure Ocean mobilizes civil society in order to support ambitious and innovative projects to  protect and restore biodiversity and degraded marine ecosystems. The ocean represents 97% of the earth's spaces available to life. A true blue lung of the planet, it produces 50% of the earth's oxygen, more than all forests combined. It absorbs 25% of CO2 emissions. The ocean faces the greatest dangers: climate change, acidification, pollution, destruction of habitats and biodiversity, overfishing, etc.  There is an urgent need to act. INNOVATING FOR THE OCEAN Pure Ocean supports innovative applied research projects all over the world.

Combining art and science to foster a deeper relationship to the Ocean  

TBA21–Academy is a contemporary art organization and cultural ecosystem fostering a deeper relationship to the Ocean through the lens of art to inspire care and action. For a decade, we have been an incubator for collaborative research, artistic production, and new forms of knowledge by combining art and science, resulting in exhibitions, research, and policy interventions. Established in 2011, the nonprofit's program is informed by a belief in the power of exchange between disciplines and in the ability of the arts as a vessel for communication, change, and action. Since its inception TBA21–Academy has launched groundbreaking projects combining artistic, sociopolitical, scientific, economic and especially environmental concerns.  These initiatives include Treasure of Lima: A Buried Exhibition, a site-specific exhibition including works by leading contemporary artists including Marina Abramovic, Ed Ruscha, Olafur Eliasson, Doug Aitken, and many more. It was buried in a secret location on the Isla del Coco, Costa Rica. The Academy developed the Alligator Head Marine Lab in collaboration with the University of the West Indies, which resulted in the establishment of the largest privately backed fish sanctuary in Jamaica that is managed by the Alligator Head Foundation. During an expedition to the Solomon Islands TBA21–Academy Director Markus Reymann and Dr. David Gruber discovered on a night dive the biofluorescent properties in the endangered Hawksbill Turtles. The sensational discovery exploded onto the global stage with over a million hits on the National Geographic website. In 2019 , the Academy has launched two initiatives to share its research and practice with the wider public: the physical venue Ocean Space in Venice, and the digital platform Ocean Archive. In 2020 , the Academy introduced a new funded research opportunity, the Ocean Fellowship Program, and Ocean / Uni, a curriculum providing students, researchers, and the public with wide-ranging and accessible explorations of the changes taking place throughout the oceans at a high level of expertise. 

Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Foundation

CTC promotes the conservation of marine biodiversity and the sustainable management of marine and coastal resources across the Coral Triangle.

Coral Triangle Center (CTC) is a foundation based in Indonesia with regional scope and global impact. Established in 2010, CTC works closely with local communities, private sector, governments, and partners to strengthen marine resource management in the Coral Triangle to protect coral reef ecosystems, ensure sustainable livelihoods and food security.

We support on-the-ground conservation in Bali, Maluku, as well as in Timor-Leste. We lead learning networks of women leaders, local government executives and marine protected area practitioners in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste.

We are developing our Center for Marine Conservation in Bali as an integrated learning space for training programs, outreach activities, interactive exhibits, and artistic and cultural performances to influence millions of people to care for our oceans and those who depend on it.

We at CTC continue to work towards our aim to inspire people to care for the oceans. Since our establishment in 2010 until 2023, we have protected   more than 435,000 hectares of critical marine habitat. We have trained more than 7,600 people to support marine protected areas and sustainable fisheries management throughout the Coral Triangle region. More than 20,000 people have visited our Center for Marine Conservation, many of whom have been inspired to take direct action to protect our oceans. In the last three years, we reach an average of 200,000 people annually to care for our seas via our social media channels. We started our monthly children’s education program and engaged more than 600 school children in Indonesia to become future stewards of our planet.

Plastics even accumulate in our bodies, risking our very health. Unfortunately, even with the number of alarming studies and reports over the past few years on this issue, there continues to be an increase in plastic production. With direct links between the plastic crisis and the climate crisis, addressing plastic pollution globally must be a major environmental priority. 5 Gyres continues to lead with scientific research to drive upstream solutions through education, advocacy, and community building.

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) develops and delivers collaborative solutions to global ocean challenges. 

This independent, objective nonprofit organization is dedicated to the resilience of the Gulf of Maine ecosystem and the communities that depend on it. GMRI collaborates with stakeholders to support healthy ocean ecosystems, a thriving blue economy, sustainable seafood, and climate-resilient coastal communities.

The organization’s evidence-based, transparent, and nonpartisan perspective allows them to convene diverse and often competing stakeholders to solve complex problems. Their unique, interdisciplinary approach combines five key capacities: 

•	Science: Research that deepens our scientific understanding of the Gulf of Maine ecosystem and economy 
•	Education: Hands-on science learning experiences for students and educators as an investment in the next generation of ecosystem stewards

In recent years, they have also deepened their role as a primary owner of waterfront property in Portland, taking on the responsibility to protect and preserve working waterfront access and demonstrating a model of low-carbon, climate-resilient solutions for this key infrastructure. 

Scientists at GMRI were the first to publish research revealing rapid warming in the Gulf of Maine. As of 2021 — the hottest year on record for the Gulf of Maine — this body of water has warmed faster than ~98% of the world’s ocean. As they help coastal communities in their own region mitigate and adapt to the impacts of rapid warming, GMRI leverages the Gulf of Maine as a testbed to develop solutions that are relevant around the world. 

GMRI has grown rapidly over the past two decades, emerging as one of the region’s most respected institutions due to its program impact and the exceptional caliber and commitment of its board, management team, and staff. The organization has a proven track record of recruiting and empowering their thoughtful, entrepreneurial, and persistent staff. This commitment to excellence is reflected in their long history of impact and achievement, with some recent examples including: 
•	Hiring and supporting leading experts on climate and fisheries, who have served at the highest levels including roles and relationships with NOAA, NASA, two presidential administrations, and multiple international fisheries management groups;

We offer over 60 events annually, and our Giving Circles are a signature program loved by new and old members alike. Our mission is to advance tools and technologies that rehabilitate coral reefs as whole ecosystems, using location-specific, ecologically-sound principles that support the way they naturally function and adapt. 

Our approach is focused on whole ecosystem restoration, including organisms, relationships between organisms, and the environment. We develop novel technologies through laboratory and field trials, and apply these in combination with the best existing methods for a given reef area, based on local ecology and in collaboration with local communities. 

Emergent Reefs is deeply committed to open source technology, knowledge sharing, and networking efforts around the world to achieve scale through collaboration.

Luminocean is an environmental organization based in Indonesia, dedicated to preserving and restoring marine ecosystems. Established in 2014 as a social enterprise and in 2018 as a foundation by a Marine Biologist and a Conservation Volunteer, Luminocean has become a respected name in marine conservation and sustainable development.

1. History

-Formation and Early Years (2014- 2018)

Luminocean was founded in response to the increasing threats facing Indonesia's rich marine biodiversity, including overfishing, pollution, and coral reef destruction. The founders, driven by a shared vision of a sustainable and thriving underwater world, launched the organization with an initial focus on getting tourists in Banda Naira to participate in small-scale coral reef restoration projects.

-Expansion and Partnerships (2018- 2022)

Through persistent efforts and growing support from local communities and international organizations, Luminocean expanded its initiatives to include comprehensive community-based conservation programs. Strategic partnerships with academic institutions and governmental bodies further enhanced the scope and impact of Luminocean's projects.

-Recognized Impact (2022- Present)

With a series of successful projects and robust scientific research, Luminocean has established itself as a leader in marine conservation in the eastern region of Indonesia. The organization now operates multiple programs across Banda islands (Maluku Province), addressing both the ecological and socio-economic aspects of marine conservation.

LUMINOCEAN (Yayasan Cahaya Samudera Indonesia)

Our multisectoral, community-driven approach not only restores ecosystems but also empowers biodiversity champions.

The Haribon Foundation began as a birdwatching society in 1972, and later became the country's first environmental conservation organization. While initially focused on the critically endangered Philippine Eagle (Haring Ibon), our conservation efforts have since expanded not only to include other species, but also to engage in habitat restoration and community development. Haribon's multisectoral approach is guided by our four pillars: conserving sites and habitats, saving species, encouraging sustainability, and empowering people. As the Philippines' pioneering environmental conservation organization, we are dedicated to advancing participatory sustainable solutions; solutions that are not only science-based but that place people at their core. Local communities are often the most vulnerable to natural disasters and the effects of climate change, but they also have the capacity to become staunch environmental defenders and biodiversity champions. Placing community development and capacity building at the heart of our programs ensures the sustainability of our efforts, so that future generations can enjoy the rewards of a healthy ecosystem.



Through our Species of Hope project, we contribute to the conservation of other endemic bird species, most notably the Negros Bleeding Heart Pigeon and Rufous-headed Hornbill. In addition to conservation research on the ecology and biology of these species, we also empower local stakeholders and communities through ecology, natural resource management, and forest warden (Bantay Gubat) training, and provide technical guidance for species conservation plans.



Through our flagship reforestation project, the Forests For Life (FFL) Movement, we restore Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) using rainforestation technology developed by our foresters, which makes use of native tree species. Since the beginning of this project, we have planted over 1 million native tree seedlings in reforestation sites across Luzon, with survival rates of 92% and above during our 3-year monitoring periods. FFL also includes rainforestation training for our partner Peoples Organizations (POs), and a community livelihood fund that supports their biodiversity-friendly livelihood alternatives. By establishing strong relationships and capacity building among our partner communities and relevant government units, we ensure the longevity of our reforestation efforts, even long after the initial agreement.

The denuded areas in our 2023 sites (in the provinces of Rizal, Quezon, and Laguna) have been fully replanted and now only require maintenance. As of 2024, agreements are already underway as we prepare to implement FFL in new Protected Areas in Quezon, Zambales, Rizal, and Nueva Ecija.



Future projects include the Blue Carbon Forest Program (BCFP), a mangrove forest restoration program, and the relaunching of Biodiversity On Wheels (BOW), a multimedia van that would visit different schools with Haribon volunteers and environmental education materials, teaching children of all ages about vital ecological principles in order to shape a new generation of environmental defenders.

Microplastics threaten our health and planet. We need to turn off the plastic tap at the source: towards a plastic free future.

Mission The mission of Plastic Soup Foundation is: 'Closing the plastic tap: Towards a plastic free future!'  

We do not take plastic out of the water; instead, we want to put an end to the increasing amount of plastic polluting the ocean by tackling the issue at its sources. Think of microplastics in cosmetics or synthetic fibres from clothing. These all end up in the ocean one way or another. We have been working towards this goal since 2011. According to the international press, we are now  'One of the leading advocacy groups to tackle plastic pollution.'  

Vision 
 With a devoted Amsterdam-based team we work with a firm approach: Be aware:  The Plastic Soup Foundation constantly draws attention to plastic soup through campaigns, news articles and social media. Get educated:  Anyone who wants to find out more about plastic soup is in the right place when they come to us. The Plastic Soup Foundation has developed educational programs for primary and secondary schools since 2016, and in 2018 we launched a new digital education program for primary schools. In addition we work together with experts, politicians, organizations, universities and companies which have similar missions or visions. Find solutions:  

The Plastic Soup Foundation stimulates all possible (innovative) solutions which help tackle the causes of plastic soup at source. Measures which prevent plastic entering the environment, water and possibly ending up in the sea have the greatest impact in our opinion. This includes reducing the amount of single-use consumer plastics, the development of a plastic footprint for companies as well as smart devices which collect plastic in waterways. 

Global sustainability goals and plastic soup In September 2015, the United Nations determined the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development . This agenda comprises the seventeen well-known  Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All Member States have an effort obligation to adjust their policies so that these goals will indeed be achieved in 2030. Many organizations and companies have now also embraced the agenda and use the sustainability goals as a guide for their actions. None of the seventeen SDGs specifically has plastic soup as its main subject. 

Meanwhile, the effects of the plastic soup are clearer and clearer and the problem is increasingly prominent on the international agenda. In July 2017, the United Nations met on the implementation of SDG 14, ("Preserve and make sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources"), and the world adopted a  resolution : "Our Ocean, our future: call for action". All countries agreed to intensify their efforts to prevent pollution of the oceans, among others by aiming to reduce plastics and microplastics. There was special attention for the reduction of Single Use Plastic (SUP), single use packaging plastics in particular. 

2023 onwards our video portraits 'Scientists Speak Out' (on YouTube) played a very important role in the UN negotiations INC4,5 and 5.2 of the Plastic Global Treaty. We spoke world leading scientists about micro- and nanoplastics. They are afraid of the consequences and want to tell the world about it. We fully support these scientists, and go on making more episodes of 'Scientists Speak Out'.

In 2025 we launched our new PlasticFreeFuture app: impact in your pocket. You can scan products to see if they contain microplastics or not.

The Port Royal Sound—a tidal inlet of the Atlantic Ocean—is the body of water that defines the Lowcountry of South Carolina, from the beaches of Hilton Head to the salt marshes of Beaufort. The mission of the Port Royal Sound Foundation (PRSF) is to conserve the Port Royal Sound for the environmental, cultural, and economic well-being of our area. PRSF strives to be the leading authority and advocate for the Port Royal Sound, providing and supporting education, research, and conservation initiatives to preserve it. 
PRSF began in 2011 and opened the doors to its FREE Maritime Center museum in 2014. We center our exhibits, events and programs around ecology, art, culture, history, and recreation to ensure meaningful, well-rounded engagement with our community and the Sound. We believe that high-quality educational activities and outdoor experiences should be accessible for all, regardless of limiting circumstances. For this reason, much of what we offer is free or has minimal program fees, and our funding comes largely from generous donors and grants. 
The following is a description of programs that will be supported, in part, by your donation:

Education
•	Maritime Center: a FREE museum housing 50+ exhibits (including live animals, gardens, history, biology, art, and more) that require ongoing updates, care, and maintenance
•	Field Trips: hands-on learning experiences for all grade-levels; agendas and curricula support South Carolina teaching standards; 3,000+ students/year
•	Pluff Mudder Summer Camp: week-long junior naturalist activities and nature experiences for children 6-13 years old, including nature hikes, kayaking, fishing, crafts, microscope activities, games, and more
•	Adult Pluff Mudder Camp: naturalist-led program for adults new to the Lowcountry or who want to learn more about the land, water, and animals of the Port Royal Sound 
•	Junior Naturalist Program: preparing the next generation to love and protect our beautiful waters and be certified as a Junior Naturalist
•	Tuesday Talks/SoundVision Webinar Series: public lectures from local experts in ecology, art, culture, science, photography, fishing, birding, turtle watch, and more
•	Saturday Programs: naturalist-led educational programs for people of all ages, including nature hikes, fishing/crabbing, crafts, reptile meet & greets, and many more
•	Storytime: weekly opportunity for young children to watch the Sound come alive through the pages of a book, paired with a fun activity or animal encounter afterwards
•	STEAM Festival: annual event that showcases the innovation and excitement of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math); 800+ attendees each year

Research
•	Citizen Scientist Program: local community members and organizations assist in the collection and compilation of long-term, widespread water quality data in collaboration with USCB and Clemson Extension Adopt-A-Stream; 75+ volunteers sampling 19 sites across the county

•	State of the Sound Report: a comprehensive report that collects and analyzes historical data about water quality and the health of the Sound; currently being written, will be made available to the public and scientists to inform future research

Conservation
•	Annual Recycled Art Contest: 100+ entrants from schools, families, and amateur and professional artists make art displays with litter or items that would be recycled; art is displayed in the Maritime Center and a jury decides winners in multiple categories 
•	Litter pickups: quarterly clean of highway around the Foundation; volunteers average approximately 100 pounds of trash each time; 1,500 bags of litter kept out of the Sound since 2014

While this list is not exhaustive, it gives you an idea of the breadth and depth of our commitment to the health of the Port Royal Sound and its inhabitants. Being a coastal community comes with a lot of perks, as well as a lot of responsibility. Preserving the healthy water and unique wildlife supported by the Sound goes hand-in-hand with preserving the scenery, seafood, art and recreation in which we take pride and that make our home so special. Caring for the Sound is about more than just protecting the environment- it’s about protecting our Lowcountry lifestyle, today and for generations to come.
