Through interactive data visualizations we can see how the world has changed; by summarizing the scientific literature we can understand why. We cover everything from global poverty to natural disasters, education and health, democracy; we have over 13,000 charts across hundreds of topics.


Our World in Data is free, open-source and provided as a public good. It has millions of users every month, and is cited in research and media across the world every day. This allows millions of people to understand the large problems the world is facing, and how we can solve them.

Security: Quad9 blocks against known malicious domains, preventing your computers and IoT devices from connecting to malware or phishing sites. Whenever a Quad9 user clicks on a website link or types in an address into a web browser, Quad9 checks the site against a list of domains combined from 20+ different threat intelligence partners. Each threat intelligence partner supplies a list of malicious domains based on their heuristics which examine such factors as scanned malware discovery, network IDS past behaviors, visual object recognition, optical character recognition (OCR), structure and linkages to other sites, and individual reports of suspicious or malicious behavior. Based on the results, Quad9 resolves or denies the lookup attempt, preventing connections to malicious sites when there is a match.

Performance: Quad9 systems are distributed worldwide in over 200 locations in 90 nations, with more coming online daily. These servers are located primarily at Internet Exchange points, meaning that the distance and time required to get answers is lower than almost any other solution. These systems are distributed worldwide, not just in high-population areas, meaning users in less well-served areas can see significant improvements in speed on DNS lookups. The systems are “anycast,” meaning that queries will automatically be routed to the closest operational system.

Euki

CETI is a nonprofit org applying advanced machine learning and gentle robotics to listen to and translate whale communication. 

Founded in 2020 as a TED Audacious Project, the organization’s science team is made up of the world's leading artificial intelligence and natural language processing experts, marine biologists, cryptographers, linguists, roboticists and underwater acousticians. CETI’s research is taking place off of the island of Dominica in the Caribbean.

In the late 1960s, scientists, including Dr. Roger Payne, a principal advisor of CETI, discovered that whales sing to one another. His recordings, Songs of the Humpback Whale, sparked the “Save the Whales” movement, one of the most successful conservation initiatives in history. The campaign eventually led to the Marine Mammal Protection Act that marked the end of large-scale whaling and saved several whale populations from extinction. 

All this by just hearing the sounds of whales. Imagine what would happen if we could understand them?

WHY WHALES 
Sperm whales specifically share traits strikingly similar to humans. They live in matriarchal and multicultural societies and share dialects and strong multigenerational family bonds. Sperm whales have the largest brains of any species and have higher-level functions such as conscious thought and future planning, as well as speech and feelings of compassion, love, suffering and intuition. Their vocalizations, among the loudest animal sounds on the planet, have a Morse code-like structure that shares the hallmarks of a highly-evolved language. Our understanding of these animals and their dialects is still in its infancy. Only in the last fifteen years have we begun to learn how some of their vocalizations are used for communication.  
WHAT CETI IS DOING
CETI is:
-Developing non-invasive robotics to listen to a population of whales in the Caribbean and put their sounds into context.
-Deploying a “Core Whale Listening System,” an innovative hydrophone array, underwater robotic gliders, custom bioinspired whale tags and other technology to gently study the whales.
-Building on substantial data on the whales’ sounds, social lives, and behavior already obtained by the Dominica Sperm Whale Project. 
-Creating a bespoke, big-data pipeline to examine the recorded data and decode it using advanced machine learning, natural language processing and data science.
-Publishing a series of academic papers beginning with the CETI roadmap.
-Collaborating with the National Geographic Society, including their Exploration Technology Lab, and amplifying the project across National Geographic’s storytelling and education channels.
-Implementing community-based programs like the Dominica Marine Conservation Fellowship, a community-based 10-month multi- module training program for young Dominicans interested in marine science, that was developed in partnership with National Geographic.
-Launching various communications projects to tell CETI’s story including a public interface for the citizen science community, resources for educators and children and arts programs.

IMPACT
Now, for the first time in history, it’s possible to use artificial intelligence to identify and interpret deep structure within animal communication. Using these technologies, CETI is building on the legacy of the “Save the Whales” movement with the goal of having an impact by contributing the following:
Interspecies Communication - A new data set of unprecedented size to the rapidly expanding field of interspecies communication and a roadmap of how humans could translate the communication of any other species
Marine Biology - A substantive contribution to the field of whale research within marine biology that opens gateways for future research initiatives. 
Policy - New information about whales that can bolster policy efforts to protect marine mammals and ocean habitats. Policy advances in this area are crucial as six out of the 13 “great” whale species (the largest whales) are still endangered (World Wildlife Federation). To ensure impact in this area, CETI plans to build out policy campaigns and initiatives. 
Perspective - It is widely endorsed that connectivity with nature can improve mental health. By sharing its journey and findings with the public, CETI hopes to contribute to a feeling of increased wonder and connectedness to whales and the ocean that can inspire action. CETI will build out arts and childrens’ initiatives in support of this impact goal.
Conservation - CETI’s first phase of research is taking place in Dominica in the Caribbean, a region that is one of the world’s greatest centers of diversity. By carrying out its research in partnership with local stakeholders, CETI hopes to contribute to regionally-led research and conservation efforts.

HOW CETI IS SUPPORTING DOMINICA
-CETI’s capacity-building initiative, Dominica Marine Conservation Fellowship is a 10-month, nine module training program for young Dominicans interested in marine science) in partnership with National Geographic.  The program has three 2022/2023 fellows and partnerships with the Dominica National Youth Council, Dominica State College and Dominica’s Ministry of Education. The program’s curriculum (co-created with National Geographic) includes modules on marine science, scientific research/techniques, water and vessel skills and storytelling and leadership among other topics.
-All research and findings by CETI in Dominica are all open-source and will be available for Dominica. The organization’s sailing research vessel (CETI-1), a Rigid Inflatable Boat (CETI-2) and Dominican made boat (CETI-3) are in operation in Dominican waters; these boats along with other CETI equipment will be donated to the local entity at the completion of the project.
-A temporary field station has been established in Dominica and has the capacity to host 10-12 researchers, fellows and students. In the long-term, CETI plans to build a permanent field station in Dominica 
-In 2023, CETI will continue local engagement and presentations with primary and secondary schools, development of video content for use in classrooms, collaborations with local artists and collaborations with local stakeholders such as marine and dive operators, civil society organizations and schools.

Today, 37% of the world lacks internet access, that’s nearly 3 billion people who are left on the margins, missing out on  the potential of digital education. Through our innovative tools and programs, we actively bridge this gap, boosting learning outcomes in some of the world's most challenging environments, including refugee camps, rural schools, and out-of-school programs. 

Since our establishment in 2013, Learning Equality has been a catalyst for change. Our vision is to create an equitable world where every learner develops agency, undergoes positive transformation, and flourishes. Our flagship ecosystem of tools, Kolibri, is centered around an open-source, offline-first learning platform that supports not only learners, but also educators and program administrators. Kolibri is actively shaping teaching and learning with tech but without the Internet globally. Learning Equality’s impact extends across 220 territories, reaching over 10 million users. Our approach addresses infrastructural barriers, advocates for open educational practices, and fosters student-centered, equitable learning environments. Leveraging Kolibri’s features, we've developed a unique approach to project-based learning. One that is  playful and collaborative to enhance academic and  critical thinking, as well as  social-emotional skills in under-resourced communities. Furthermore, at Learning Equality, we are also at the forefront of creating AI/ML technology for new curricular alignment tools, addressing challenges in resource-limited areas.

Then in his last year of junior high school, he had a math teacher who used a very different approach in class - he used activities, he made it interesting....even fun! That point marked a 180 degree turn in Issifu's life. He began loving the subject, excelling in it, reaching the top of his class across all the subjects, and today he is studying computer engineering at one of the best universities in Ghana.

In collaboration with public middle and secondary schools, universities, local agencies, community-based organizations, and various cooperatives, GAA has been at the forefront of building partnerships to design, implement and manage successful educational development and training programs in Africa.

**Statement of Need**

To close the digital divide in Africa, some say that stakeholders need to rethink universal access and broadband policies, promote equal access to digital technology and Increase investment.

**Current Statistics**

- **Broadband access**: In 2022, only 36% of Africa's population had broadband internet access. 
- **Mobile internet availability**: While 70% of Africa's population has access to mobile internet, less than 25% use it. 
- **Digital gender gap**: In 2020, 35% of men and 24% of women in Africa used the internet. 
- **Affordability**: In 2019, the average cost of one gigabyte of mobile data was 10.5% of monthly per-capita Gross National Income (GNI), which is higher than the United Nations Broadband Commission's recommended 2% target. 
- **Digital literacy**: Africa has a significant divide in digital skills. 
- **Digital infrastructure**: Africa's digital infrastructure coverage, access, and quality lag other regions. 
- **Digital competitiveness**: In 2021, Egypt ranked first in Africa in the digital competitiveness index, followed by the Gambia and Tanzania. 

As recently as January 2024 datareportal.com reports that more than 90% of the U.S. population has access to the Internet — whereas in rural areas throughout Morocco there is limited access, and in Kenya 40.8%, Tanzania 31.9% and Uganda 27% of the population has NO such access. Without urgent action, the situation will likely get worse as the region faces a rising demand for education due to a still-growing school-age population.

**Funding Request:** To offer a holistic, scalable program to bridge the inequity gap in digital access and education for 20,000 students in 50 public middle schools and secondary schools in Kenya, Morocco, Tanzania and Uganda. Through a coalition of community-based partners, GAA will lead the Digital Learning Program whose objective is to assure: A world where all can access reliable high-speed internet, devices, learning content, and digital literacy skills. By fostering equal access and proficiency in navigating the digital landscape, we empower current and future generations.

**Program Description Goals:**

Bridging the digital divide is not exclusive to the gap between wealthy nations and poor countries; it also encompasses the growing internal divide in developing countries between middle class families who can afford to send their children to private schools that are equipped with computer labs versus poor households whose children attend schools public schools that have minimal or no technological resources. For digital equity to be successful, technology tools must be **accessible**; schools, learners and families must be able to **affordably** access and maintain them; and learners and families must have the information and skills to **adopt** the technology. These three pillars—**access, affordability, and adoption**—must all exist and work together for communities to remain connected and fully participate as informed citizens in society and the global economy.

**Proof of Concept**

This request is an expansion of a current program already approved by the Ministries of Education in each of four countries in Africa, and has a proven record of success for the five year in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya; rural areas of the Atlas Mountains in southern Morocco; in and around Arusha, Tanzania; and in West Nile Region (including students from the refugee settlements), in southwest Uganda.

**IMPACT Report (AS OF 6/30/2024)**

·      Number of Students: more than 16,000

·      Of the total number of students that the program will reach, approximately 45% of them are female students, plus a growing percentage of students in Uganda in the program are refugees.

·      Number of Teachers: more than 220

·      Number of Countries: 4 — Kenya, Morocco, Tanzania, Uganda

·      Number of Locations: 35, including 33 public schools, two faith-based schools, one technology training center

·      Partners: Al-Alakawayn University (Morocco), Tangaza University (Kenya), Muni University (Uganda)

**Rationale for the Program**

Digital literacy and accessibility are widely regarded as a basic component of civic life and has enormous impact on education, economic development, social welfare, social equity as well as the increased public participation in elections and development of good governance, and access to expanding opportunities both at the local and international level.

A digital learning program for poor and vulnerable students will develop digital skills and provide them with the lifelong ability to navigate the internet. Presently, for example, university application forms are all online, which provides a distinct advantage to urban students who have computer training and access to the internet, whereas rural students are hindered from apply to university due to their lack of computer training as well as access to the internet in rural areas. This results in an even more pronounced digital divide that excludes poorer, rural students from entering higher education.

Of the total number of students that the program will reach, approximately 45% of them are female students, and a growing percentage of students in Uganda are refugees.

Total Cost of the Program: Between $26-$38 per student.

Global Alliance for Africa

The Prison Mathematics Project supports incarcerated individuals pursue self-studies in the field of mathematics.

The Prison Mathematics Project (PMP) brings math into prison in three different ways. 

1. Our one-on-one mentorship program pairs incarcerated individuals with a mathematical mentor. Our mentors are professors, post-docs, PhD students, undergraduates, math teachers, and people working in industry who have a passion for math. Once paired, the mentorship works to reach the educational goals of the incarcerated participant. This is done through letters, e-messaging, and phone calls when available. Deep relationships are formed that continue post-release and are a great way to support the difficult transition back to the outside world. 
2. Math circles in prison are a great way to build a community around math. Local mathematicians go into the prison to lead 1-2 hour events that work on problems solving and analytical thinking skills. Some of the topics explored in these events are combinatorics, number theory, graph theory, etc.  We have done events in Washington, Michigan, North Dakota, and we have upcoming events planned in New Jersey, Calgary, and Toronto. 
3. The PMP Console is a coding app that goes on inmates' tablets. It has a text editor, complier, and courses with exercises and explanations. It has recently been approved for a pilot program at the biggest prison in Australia. Giving people more technical skills and education will lead to better post-release employment and will help lower the recidivism rate.

Technology is powerful because it eliminates tradeoffs - it can allow us to continually improve the lives that animals live on farm, while protecting the livelihoods of farmers and maintaining the abundance of our food system.

Our Philosophy:
The last few decades of industrialization in animal agriculture have led to an unprecedented period of abundance in our food system. More people than ever have access to a practically unlimited supply of affordable, safe, and nutritious animal protein.

Yet this abundance hasn’t come without costs. Most people in our society care about the welfare of animals, and polls consistently show that Americans want animals on farms to be handled respectfully and responsibly. Yet when informed of practices that are commonplace on industrial farms, a vast majority of people express discomfort. Peoples’ assumptions and expectations around animal welfare are often disappointed by the realities of how animal agriculture currently works.

As a result, our society has had to start grappling with how to navigate the tradeoff between maintaining a safe, affordable, nutritious supply of animal protein, and maintaining the respect and care that everyone believes animals deserve. Heated debates have started within businesses, in our government, and in the media. With vociferous advocates on both sides, the conversation has become polarized, being too often framed as activists versus farmers, welfare versus affordability. 

We believe that the best solution is not to choose either animal welfare or an abundant food supply, but to leverage technology to have both.

The Lessons of Climate Tech:
The challenge of climate change is remarkably similar to the challenge of animal welfare. To use the language of economists, both are unpriced externalities: unplanned consequences of industrialization whose costs are not directly paid by producers or consumers, and hence are not inherently incentivized to be improved. No one wants the climate to change, yet it happens anyways. Similarly, no one wants a farm animal to be treated poorly, yet it happens anyways.

When it comes to climate change, the most promising practical solutions are technologies like solar panels, electric vehicles, improved batteries, and carbon capture. These technologies are powerful because they eliminate tradeoffs - they allow us to maintain the prosperity brought about by economic growth, while simultaneously mitigating the harms of climate change. 

Despite the similarities with the climate space, technology is an under discussed and underinvested in as a solution to animal welfare. Information is often difficult to impossible to find, and few champions actively push solutions forward. 

Our mission is to change this. Instead of continuing to grapple with how much we as individual consumers or business are willing to personally sacrifice for animal welfare, we can use technology to eliminate the tradeoff. By expanding what’s possible, technology allows us to preserve the abundance brought about by industrialized animal agriculture, while simultaneously bringing animal welfare in line with the expectations and demands of the modern consumer.

The Machine Intelligence Research Institute is a research nonprofit studying the mathematical underpinnings of intelligent behavior. Our mission is to develop formal tools for the clean design and analysis of general-purpose AI systems, with the intent of making such systems safer and more reliable when they are developed.

The field of AI has a reputation for overselling its progress. In the “AI winters” of the late 1970s and 1980s, researchers’ failures to make good on ambitious promises led to a collapse of funding and interest in AI. Although the field is now undergoing a renaissance, overconfidence is still a major fear; discussion of the possibility of human-equivalent general intelligence is still largely relegated to the science fiction shelf.

At the same time, researchers largely agree that AI is likely to begin outperforming humans on most cognitive tasks in this century. Given how disruptive domain-general AI could be, we think it is prudent to begin a conversation about this now, and to investigate whether there are limited areas in which we can predict and shape this technology’s societal impact.

Researchers at MIRI tend to be relatively agnostic about how the state of the art in AI will change over the coming decades, and how many years off smarter-than human AI systems are.

The mission of Alliance to Feed the Earth in Disasters (ALLFED) is to help build resilience to global catastrophic food system failure.

ALLFED seeks to provide practical, affordable, and resilient food solutions so that, in the event of a global catastrophe, governments, industry, and communities can respond quickly and distribute food equitably, saving lives and promoting the continuation of global cooperation.

However, ALLFED currently faces a major funding gap. **We have had to scale back our programs and, without new funding, will need to continue cutting half of our budget in 2026**. This will mean continuing to significantly scale down our programs, including our research output and the ability to support governments in preparing for global food system shocks.

We focus on events, such as large volcanic eruptions, pandemics, and cyberattacks, which could deplete 5% or more of global calorie output, or access to those calories. In such events, the loss of food would likely kill far more people than the catastrophe itself directly.

“Resilient food solutions'' are what ALLFED calls the foods, technologies, and systems that could help everyone survive global catastrophic food failure. ALLFED’s ultimate goal is to feed everyone, no matter what.

ConnectMyVariant is an educational health-focused 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that supports individuals and families with hereditary disease in their early detection and prevention efforts. We provide unique value by leveraging our evidenced-based family connection protocols to help people identify other at-risk relatives and help those relatives access genetic testing so that they can get optimal medical care. ConnectMyVariant brings people with the same genetic risk together through our variant database and community engagement events to share experiences and find common ancestors. ConnectMyVariant also works to increase awareness of the benefits of family outreach among physicians, others who provide prevention care, and the broader genealogy community.
 
Our key activities are:

- Working with patients to implement personalized family outreach plans
- Interactive educational workshops about sharing information on inherited disease risk
- Variant specific family reunions to share stories and plan outreach to cousins
- Genealogy assistance to help connect individuals in variant groups
- Individual equity and inclusion grants for family and community outreach

Need and Impact:
When hereditary disease risk is known, family outreach has been proven to be the most effective and cost-effective intervention for early detection and prevention. This family outreach, also known as cascade testing, is recommended by multiple guidelines. Despite overwhelming evidence, family outreach assistance is not reimbursed by insurance or integrated into healthcare. Many people suffer and die from hereditary disease that could have been prevented or caught early.
 
We have shown that our strategies to encourage family outreach can act as a communication multiplier. Our pilot research at the University of Washington showed that this approach enhanced patient experience, was considered ethical, and was appreciated by newly identified relatives. Our approach is low-cost and is 25 to 50 times more effective than awareness and education interventions that target the general population.

Smith in Atlanta, Georgia on the premise that exposure to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) community is critical to K-12 students pursuing STEM careers.  Hence, the organization being named SEM Link, because the essence of our work is connecting youth to the STEM community for youth to provide them with positive adult role models in STEM. Our programs and events increase students’ awareness of STEM Careers and encourage their participation in STEM Research through digital learning and hands-on activities.  Since the organization’s inception SEM Link through our programs and events over 500 STEM professionals have exposed over 15,000 youth to over 50 different STEM career paths as well as supported hundreds of young STEM research trainees.  

SEM Link’s mission is to strengthen the self-efficacy of K-12 students to pursue STEM careers by exposing them to positive adult role models from the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) community that increase students' awareness of STEM careers and encourage their participation in STEM Research through digital learning and hands-on activities. Our vision statement is "unveiling potential through exposure".

Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link Inc. (SEM Link) has a two-core hybrid program model, Community STEM Program and Experimental Design Program, that provides K-12 students with digital learning opportunities and in-person programs and events in Metro Atlanta.   SEM Link’s programs increase K-12 students' awareness of STEM Careers and encourage participation in STEM research through digital learning and hands-on activities. 

Our Experimental Design Program teaches youth to read, write, do, and talk STEM through digital learning, group mentoring and social media. This program also supports young STEM Researchers and Innovators by providing judges for STEM competitions.  the program activities are:

- ***STEM Journal Club-*** This program aims to develop STEM communication and literacy skills for Metro Atlanta high school students from ethnic and racial communities with historically low participation in high-level STEM research competitions. Participants will engage in scholarly research, read, and analyze STEM literature (journals), and gain exposure to relevant concepts to spark their interest in STEM Research. The final project for the STEM Journal Club participants is the creation of a podcast episode based on a STEM journal article, which will be featured on our [SEM Explained podcast](https://anchor.fm/sem-explained). It is a hybrid program which has digital and in-person learning opportunities that take place from October through May.
- ***STEM Fair Judging (October-February)*** *–* SEM Link will recruit volunteers to serve as judges for school and district fairs. The recruitment process will start in October.  The judging at schools will take place in November and December and the district fairs in January and February.
- ***STEM Literacy Program***- This goal of this program is to provide youth with opportunities to develop their STEM literacy skills through various literacy initiatives and programs which include donating culturally relevant STEM books to community spaces and STEM Literacy events in communities.

Our Community STEM Program focuses on providing STEM activities in community spaces, has digital and in-person learning opportunities that expose youth to STEM through career exploration, hands-on activities, and interactive demonstrations. This program's activities are: 

- ***STEM at the Library-***In partnership with the Fulton County Public Library, we host STEM events and programs at branches in South Fulton
- ***STEM Outreach with the Homeschool Families-***In partnership with homeschool groups and micro schools, we host STEM programs and events to serve youth that are in non-traditional educational settings.
- ***Teen Science Café.***   These workshops are for middle and high school students to introduce them to STEM Careers. The cafes take place in   informal settings where STEM professionals share their career journey & current work with students & engage them in hands-on activity or demo connected to their work. We host monthly cafes virtually and at the sites of selected community partners.******  
- ***Art Contest and Art Show*-** This is our annual event that provides an opportunity for youth who are interested in both STEM and Art to explore those interests by submitting artwork. The art contest takes place between December and February. The art show takes place in April, the artwork of the winners of the contest will be submitted in the show.
- ***Community STEM Program Special Events-***These are special STEM events that take place in community spaces to engage youth in hands-on STEM activity that explore various STEM career paths/disciplines i.e. STEM and Basketball, National Chemistry Week, etc.

The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is a leader in the fight against cancer since 1931. Our purpose is to lead the fight against cancer. Our mission is to be the preferred non-profit leader that enables research in lowering cancer risk, educating the public regarding symptoms, screening and risk reduction, and providing care and support to all those affected by cancer.


CANSA is committed to connecting people facing cancer with information, day-to-day help and much-needed emotional support. We aim to ensure that cancer survivors and their loved ones do not face cancer alone.


While we are not privy to medical diagnoses and the onus falls on the patient or their family (with their permission) to contact CANSA for assistance, we are here to support them through every step of their cancer journey.

OUR SERVICES
CANSA offers a wide range of services to those affected by cancer:
• Health Awareness Programmes - comprises health education campaigns centred on creating awareness of cancer symptoms, the importance of screening and lowering cancer risk.
• Mobile Health Clinics – bring awareness to men and women in rural areas who would otherwise not have access and operates on sponsored funds.
• Promote early detection - CANSA Care Centres countrywide offer screenings and early detection programmes.


CANSA ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE
• CANSA Care Centres - offer care and support services to those affected by cancer, including employee wellness programmes, stoma support, wigs, prostheses, assistive devices and medical equipment hire, clinical support, counselling (face-to-face and Tele Counselling), support groups and home-based care.
• CANSA Care Homes – provide patient care and support to the main metropolitan areas for out-of-town cancer patients undergoing treatment.
• CANSA TLC Lodging – provides lodging and support services for parents and guardians of children undergoing cancer treatment.
• CANSA Help Desk - Toll free 0800 22 66 22.
• WhatsApp helplines – offer multilingual support services in English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sesotho and Siswati.
• Online support groups and platforms – help patients and loved one’s cope with a cancer diagnosis or connect with others walking a similar path as they fight cancer.
• Social media platforms and CANSA Website – make information available to the public.
• CANSA Tele-Counselling – offers a confidential, professional, cancer-related telephonic counselling service to cancer patients, caregivers and their families, and parents or guardians of children living with cancer. This service is free of charge and available in seven languages - English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu, siSwati, Sesotho and Setswana.


CANSA VOLUNTEERS
CANSA is a volunteer-driven organisation, relying on our trained volunteers to assist in delivering our services to local communities across South Africa. We have various volunteer opportunities and trainings available.


CANSA IS COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING THE GLOBAL UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGs)
The Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked goals designed to be a ‘blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all". The SDGs were introduced in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by 2030. CANSA strives toward achieving these goals within our capabilities.


We have identified the Global Goals (SDGs) CANSA has contributed to, in some capacity, during the reporting period with an emphasis on Goals 3 (Good health and wellbeing), 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), 7 (Affordable and clean energy),  8 (Decent Work and economic growth), 9 (Industry innovation and infrastructure), 10 (Reduced inequalities), 11 (Sustainable cities and communities), 12 (Responsible consumption and production), 13 (Climate action), 14 (Life below water), 15 (Life on land), 16 (Peace, justice and strong institutions), and 17 (Partnership for the goals).

CANCER SCREENINGS (Stats 2020/21)
• Over 54 210 conducted in total (with abnormalities referred accordingly).
• Conducted over 6 260 pap smears and facilitated 2 989 in partnership with the Department of Health (DoH).
• Carried out more than 20 570 clinical breast examinations.
• 8 848 Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests completed and 351 done in partnership with DoH.
• Over 3 010 skin examinations using the FotoFinder Mole Analysis device took place.
• Expanded workplace screening and wellness programmes.


HEALTH SCREENING, EDUCATION AND AWARENESS (Stats 2020/21)
• Approximately 40 727 individual information and education sessions conducted with screenings.
• Over 7 560 people assessed to determine their lifestyle risk, with 2 361 glucose tests performed for diabetes.
• More than 465 900 people reached through 1 738 talks and 4 531 exhibitions with the help of 795 health promotion volunteers.
• Over 150 radio talks hosted for cancer education.
• Distributed over 71 110 information leaflets to promote health awareness campaigns.


CANSA ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE
• More than 79 700 youth reached through 402 school programmes.
• Our CANSA Helpdesk responded to over 12 680 enquiries for support and information via telephone, WhatsApp, email, website and social media.


CURRENT PLANS AND THE FUTURE
CANSA’s service and income generation is managed and deployed centrally with national teams, placed across the country. We streamline and modernise our service and fundraising efforts regularly. We have CANSA Care Centres around the country with certain CANSA Care Centres operating as ‘Virtual CANSA Care Centres’ where employees work remotely to offer services within their surrounding communities assisted by willing volunteers.


Our country’s economic recovery post COVID-19 will take a few years. The need for our normal services continues and even more patients and caregivers need help. We are aware of our duty to continue to educate South Africa about the cancer burden and find innovative ways to help lower the cancer risk, while providing support and care to the communities we serve.

Karim Slaoui was born in Belgium in 1987. After a thesis in applied mathematics to forecast the impact of tsunamis on the coastline, he launched Take Eat Easy, a food delivery company by bicycle, pioneering in South Europe. Next, he started the venture Cowboy, promoting urban cycling.
Karim was driven by optimism and innovation.

Karim was obsessed with ‘equality of opportunities’. He encouraged youngsters to be ambitious and to follow their dreams while pursuing an engineering degree. He was also involved in charities dedicated to help underprivileged teenagers in France to choose wisely for their future. With his Moroccan name, he faced prejudices and he was determined to change biased mindsets.

In 2018 Karim wanted to run a marathon but had something odd in the knee. By the end of the year, he was diagnosed with a synovial sarcoma. After 5 years of experimental treatment in 3 different countries, surgeries, and other fights, he became paralyzed because of a metastatic tumor in his spine. He lost the ability to walk and to move from the chest down.


His wife Aurore Balsan and he discovered the lack of innovation in addressing the challenges faced by wheelchair users. Before his death on September 29th 2023, Aurore Balsan, his wife, and Moncef Slaoui, his father, committed to pursue his dream and vision of promoting more innovation and entrepreneurship to help address the challenges faced by wheelchair users.

Strongest Hearts is so excited to have you here.  We founded Strongest Hearts in 2022 after our son’s diagnosis with Becker’s Muscular Dystrophy.  BMD is an incredibly serious disease that affects the muscle systems of young boys and men.  Like the more common and more severe Duchenne’s, it is progressive and life threatening.

Strongest Hearts intends to end that threat.  Our non-profit is designed to exclusively work to find a cure or treatment, educate and advocate for this deadly disease.  DMD is the number one killer for adolescents in the US and we search to find a solution that will help over 90% of the DMD and BMD community.  

Like so many people and families, we have felt fear, anxiety and hopelessness and have received massively conflicting data from doctors and websites.  It is time to stop that cycle and move towards a day when we can say that a diagnosis of any muscular dystrophy, while unsettling, is no longer a tragedy.  We truly believe that we have the people, the skill and the technology to end this scourge once and for all.

Neuromatch enables more people to participate in scientific research by overcoming barriers in the form of education, social networks, and accessibility of science communication. 

Specifically, we find innovative new ways to allow collaborative access in these areas by enabling groups of scientists to work together to make these platforms as public goods that can scale up to be used by many. 

Our Academy provides live instruction, open source education that is contributed to by hundreds of researchers to provide always affordable education to people around the world. We are active in 15 different countries and teach undergraduate and PhD level science in 20 different languages. 

Our Community program creates online-first scientific conferences and community events that focus on human interaction, allowing us to leverage the equitable nature of online work without significant sacrifices in the networking and connection aspect of these events. 

The NMDA program provides researchers with real on the job experience in internships, job matching, and career guidance. 

Our large buy in to these communities we serve provides us the ability to conquer problems in science dependent on large network effects, such as issues in academic publishing, job matching, and large research collaborations.

Black women constitute only 2 percent of STEM jobs. A statistic that has been stagnant since 2018. Black Women represent the largest unserved market and largest disruptive force in business. Black women struggle at every stage of the STEM pipeline. It’s not due to lack of desire, or capacity, it’s to lack of support.

Black Sisters in STEM (Black SiS) is on a mission to unleash the global brilliance of Gen Z Black Women by reinventing their journey towards STEM based careers. We are building and upskilling the largest talent marketplace of Black Gen Z women to systematically address the racial wealth gap and create generational socio-economic growth. In short, we help Black Gen Z women breaking into STEM careers share, learn, and get hired.

We have built an empire of ~8k Black women from 33 countries and 200+ schools. Growing membership at 75% YoY. Most importantly, earning our fellows $4M+ in compensation packages. From Lagos, Nigeria to Atlanta, GA we are building a career community the world has never seen.
