Point Blue Conservation Science’s mission is to conserve birds, other wildlife, and ecosystems through science, partnerships, and outreach. Founded in 1965 as Point Reyes Bird Observatory, we promote nature-based solutions for wildlife and people to reduce impacts of habitat loss, climate change, and other environmental threats. Our 160 scientists, restoration specialists, and educators work with local communities as well as hundreds of partners—government agencies, nonprofits, universities, private landowners, and others—to advance conservation outcomes. Headquartered in Petaluma, California, our staff is dispersed and our geography ranges from Alaska to Antarctica, on land and at sea.
Point Blue has amassed some of the world’s longest continuous ecological data sets and our staff have published thousands of scientific papers. More than one billion observations provide invaluable insights into environmental change and drive our collaborative conservation approaches.
To achieve our mission, we work across four strategic initiatives:
- Globally connected conservation science. By integrating large and long-term data sets, advanced analytical techniques, new science and technologies, and regional to international collaborations, Point Blue ensures its science supports evidence-based conservation networks and partnerships to achieve broad-scale conservation targets.
- Empowered communities. We partner with students, teachers, farmers, ranchers, tribes, and other land stewards to implement community-based restoration and conservation practices that reflect the unique cultural, historical, social, and ecological contexts in which we work.
- Connecting science to action. We apply our scientific discovery, decision support tools, and strong partnerships to direct stewardship, restoration, and adaptive management to address real-time ecological challenges focusing on multi-benefit outcomes.
- Policy engagement. Point Blue leverages scientific insights from work across our initiatives to inform and influence policy, bridging local actions with global conservation frameworks to tackle conservation and environmental challenges at scale.
