Pacific Whale Foundation

Pacific Whale Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring and advancing conservation for whales, dolphins and the ocean.

Founded in 1980 by Greg Kauffman, Pacific Whale Foundation grew out of the global “Save the Whales” movement, one of the most successful conservation efforts in history. At a time when whale populations were dangerously low, our founder helped advance research, education and advocacy that contributed to international protections and the recovery of many species.

Today, that legacy continues through a model grounded in science and built for impact.

Whales and dolphins still face growing threats, including climate change, marine debris, vessel strikes, bycatch and unsustainable tourism. Addressing these challenges requires more than awareness alone. It requires research to understand the problems, education to inspire action, and conservation efforts that drive real change.

At Pacific Whale Foundation, these are not separate efforts. They are deeply connected.

Science drives everything we do.
Our research programs study whales, dolphins and marine ecosystems in Hawai‘i and around the world. From long-term humpback whale studies to urgent research on endangered dolphin populations, our work generates the data needed to protect marine life and inform policy decisions.

We bring our research to life through hands-on education programs that connect people directly to the ocean. Through initiatives like Keiki Whale Watch and Ocean Career Quest, we inspire thousands of students each year to become future ocean stewards, scientists and conservation leaders.

Using our research findings, we advocate for policies and practices that reduce human impact on marine life. From addressing marine debris to promoting responsible wildlife interactions, our work helps protect critical habitats and species.
