We support smallholder and Indigenous farmers—especially women and youth—to transition from extractive agriculture to regenerative, agroecological practices that improve food sovereignty, climate resilience, and local economies. Our mission is rooted in the belief that transformative solutions must come from the communities themselves, not be imposed from the outside.
Where We Work: In partnership with 16 local organizations across 11 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, West Africa, and South Asia, we co-create programs that are grounded in cultural knowledge and sustained by community leadership. Our countries include:
- Latin America and the Caribbean: Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico
- West Africa: Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Senegal
- South Asia: India, Nepal
Impact: In 2024 alone, we:
- supported 865 community-based organizations
- reached 1,229 rural communities across 11 countries
- engaged 104,636 farmers in applying agroecological practices
- regenerated over 228,400 hectares of degraded land
- improved the lives of 1,189,939 people through healthier food systems, stronger livelihoods, and increased resilience
Core Program Areas: Our programs empower smallholder farmers, women, and youth to lead solutions that build healthy food systems, resilient livelihoods, and thriving communities:
- Agroecology: We help smallholder farm households increase productivity, food security, and climate resilience by transitioning to agroecological farming systems. Through farmer-to-farmer learning, soil restoration, water conservation, and seed-saving initiatives, communities regenerate their land while strengthening local control over food production.
- Women’s Empowerment: We support women farmers to gain greater control over productive resources, income, and decision-making within their households and communities. By investing in their leadership and agency, we foster more equitable, resilient, and thriving rural societies.
- Local Markets and Livelihoods: We work with farming communities to increase and diversify household incomes by strengthening local markets. Through support for cooperatives, savings groups, and local enterprise development, families reduce economic vulnerability and build more sustainable livelihoods.
- Improved Nutrition: Our programs improve the dietary diversity and nutritional status of vulnerable households through integrated farming and home garden systems. By promoting locally grown, culturally appropriate foods, we reduce hunger while strengthening the link between food production and family health.
- Enabling Context: We collaborate with local, national, and regional allies to create the conditions for agroecology to thrive. This includes supporting farmer networks, influencing policy, and sharing successful approaches to shift systems toward more sustainable, community-centered models.
- Youth Storytellers: We empower young people in our partner communities to become agents of change by documenting and sharing the experiences of local farmers. These youth storytellers amplify grassroots voices and inspire broader action for just and regenerative food systems.
How You Can Help: When you give to Groundswell International, you’re investing directly in smallholder farmers, women, and youth who are building regenerative food systems from the ground up.
Your gift does more than fund tools and training—it restores degraded land, strengthens food sovereignty, and supports the long-term wellbeing of families and ecosystems. Here’s how your donation can make a difference:
$25 Resilient Farmer: Empowers one farmer to grow healthy food, increase income, nourish their family, and cultivate a healthy future.
$125 Farmer-to-Farmer Promoters: Trains a successful farmer to become a peer educator, helping neighbors adopt proven agroecological techniques.
$300 Regenerate an Acre of Land: Enables a family to restore one acre of degraded land over several seasons—rebuilding soil fertility, producing abundant food, and increasing climate resilience.
$560 Women’s Solidarity Groups: Supports the formation of a group of up to 25 women who pool savings for micro-loans, strengthen their farming and small livestock production, and build income-generating power and mutual support.
