Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice (CURYJ, pronounced “courage”) was established in 2011 by formerly-incarcerated community activists focused on ending Oakland’s gang injunctions, a kind of “group restraining order” that encouraged racial profiling and severely limited youth freedoms. Since then, CURYJ has grown into a deeply rooted movement organization centered on abolishing systems of oppression. With an intersectional approach that includes youth leadership development, policy advocacy, community healing, legal services, food and climate justice, and direct intervention for formerly-incarcerated and systems-impacted community members, CURYJ uplifts the voice and power of young people in the fight to end youth incarceration in California.
