Coco Puerto Rico is a community-led environmental nonprofit rooted in the coastal town of Isabela, Puerto Rico since 2020. We work hand-in-hand with local residents to protect our beaches, sand dunes, and mangroves while teaching our communities how to care for these ecosystems themselves.
Through the only community-run native coastal plant nursery in the region, along with beach cleanups, seed collection, plant propagation, coastal restoration, ecological tours, and free environmental workshops, we engage more than 1,000 volunteers each year—many from underserved coastal communities.
Our nursery can grow 4,000 native plants, but we need your support to keep it thriving. When you support Coco Puerto Rico, you’re helping neighbors protect their coastline, strengthen community resilience, and pass on the knowledge needed to care for Puerto Rico’s shores for generations to come.
About Coco Puerto Rico
Coco Puerto Rico was born in 2020 with the hopes of uniting vulnerable and historically neglected coastal communities in the northwestern region of Puerto Rico. It became a grassroots and community-led environmental movement in Isabela. Our mission is to educate and empower communities toward self-management, with a strong focus on coastal conservation and resilience.
We work at the intersection of environmental protection, community leadership, and climate adaptation, centering the knowledge, participation, and stewardship of local residents—especially those from underserved, low-income coastal communities.
How We Achieve Our Mission
Coco Puerto Rico advances coastal conservation through hands-on, community-driven initiatives, including:
- The only community-led native coastal plant nursery in the region, dedicated to protecting Puerto Rico’s coastal ecosystems
- 15 environmental stewardship initiatives, such as:
- Native seed collection and preservation
- Propagation of coastal and mangrove species
- Sand dune and mangrove restoration plantings
- Beach cleanups and habitat protection efforts
- Ecological tours in areas of high ecological value
- Free environmental education workshops for youth and adults
Our educational programs are offered at public and private schools, universities, and community spaces, ensuring access to environmental knowledge across generations and sectors.
Community Impact
Each year, Coco Puerto Rico directly engages more than 1,000 volunteers and participants, most of whom come from underserved, low-income communities. Through active participation, community members gain practical skills, ecological awareness, and a sense of ownership over the protection of their coastal environments.
Our native plant nursery currently has the capacity to grow 4,000 plants, which are essential for restoring dunes, mangroves, and coastal buffers that protect communities from erosion, storm surge, and climate impacts.
Why Your Support Matters
While our impact is growing, our capacity depends on sustained support. Contributions from donors allow us to:
- Expand plant production and restoration efforts
- Provide free environmental education to more youth and community members
- Equip volunteers with tools, materials, and training
- Strengthen long-term community resilience along Puerto Rico’s coast
With your support, Coco Puerto Rico can continue restoring ecosystems, empowering communities, and safeguarding the coastal environments that sustain us all.
