Conservation

Association for Human Integrated Massive Social Action (AHIMSA) was founded by a group of committed social activists who were actively involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of victims of the devastating floods of 1976. Following this humanitarian response, the group continued to advocate for the common good of local communities in and around the Vaiyampatti Block of Tamil Nadu. To sustain their efforts and expand their work in a more organized manner, they formally came together and registered AHIMSA in 1989 under the Societies Registration Act.

AHIMSA works with marginalized farmers, landless laborers, and rural women, promoting equitable livelihoods through socially just and ecologically sustainable approaches. Rooted in the principles of sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation, the organization adopts community-led, eco-friendly methods to improve livelihoods while maintaining harmony with nature.

Green Nutrition Mission in Manapparai Taluk Schools

In the dry belts of Tamil Nadu, farming is not just a livelihood—it’s survival. Many small farmers and landless laborers struggle with unpredictable rainfall, poor soil health, and limited income opportunities. One farmer from Vaiyampatti recalls how chemical-heavy farming pushed him into debt. Through AHIMSA’s training in sustainable agriculture, he shifted to low-cost, natural farming methods. Today, his soil is healthier, his costs are lower, and his family has regained financial stability. Similarly, women who once had no independent income are now part of self-help groups and skill development programs. With training in vocational skills and access to livelihoods, they are contributing to their households and gaining confidence and decision-making power. School children are educated about the environment through school nutrition gardens, which also provide healthy food for their lunch. These are not isolated stories—they reflect a broader transformation happening across rural communities.

Green Nutrition Mission in Manapparai Taluk Schools

In rural Manapparai, many school children lack access to fresh, nutritious food. At the same time, schools have unused land that can be transformed into something powerful — living gardens that feed both body and mind. The Green Nutrition Mission is an initiative to create sustainable school nutritional gardens across 4 government schools, benefiting over 570 students. These gardens will grow fresh vegetables, greens, and fruits to support school meals while teaching children essential life skills in agriculture, nutrition, and environmental care.  What your support will do: Build and maintain school gardens Provide seeds, tools, and irrigation systems Train teachers and students in sustainable farming Promote healthy eating habits among children  Why it matters: A small garden can make a big difference. Fresh produce improves student health, boosts learning, and reduces dependency on external food sources. It also empowers children to become future stewards of their environment.
