LET’S ENHANCE SELF RELIANCE OF PEOPLE WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA (PWS) in INDONESIA
Background
Schizophrenia is one of the global public health problems include Indonesia. Based on the WHO report (2023), the estimated number at global are 24 million or one out of 300 people (WHO, 2022). While, based on Basic Health Survey Riskesdas (2018), the number of household members with schizophrenia or psychosis in Indonesia is 6.7 per 1.000 (Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, 2019).
Since 2020, the Lentera Kesehatan Nusantara Foundation (YLKN) is a non-profit organization founded in June 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia has been committed to supporting the Indonesian government to develop the community based model for supporting PWS with support from Johnson & Johnson through Give2Asia in two districts in East Java: Ponorogo and Sidoarjo.
The community support model implemented by YLKN for mental health is built on three foundational pillars: cadre support system, caregiver's forum and community reintegration of PWS.
YLKN’s mental health initiatives have already yielded impressive results. More than 600 PWS have benefited from the support systems developed by the foundation. Key achievements include: improved treatment compliance from 40% to exceed than 80%.
In order to sustain and build upon its successes, YLKN has developed a comprehensive plan to strengthen and expand its mental health programs in the coming years to another two districts. The plan focuses on three key areas: integrated income-generating activities, strengthening the community cadres and enhancing caregiver's forum.
Why Support YLKN?
Addressing a Critical Need for Mental Health Interventions
The need for community-based mental health interventions in Indonesia is urgent. Mental health challenges are widespread, yet the country’s healthcare system is not equipped to address these issues on a large scale. By supporting YLKN, donors can help fill this gap and provide essential services to some of the most vulnerable members of society.
Proven Track Record
YLKN has a strong track record of success. Its mental health programs have resulted in a more than 40% increase in treatment compliance among PWS, and its income-generating activities have empowered 20 PWS to achieve financial independence. These results demonstrate the effectiveness and sustainability of YLKN’s approach.
Expanding Impact to More Districts
While YLKN has achieved significant success in Ponorogo and Sidoarjo, many districts across Indonesia still lack adequate mental health services. With additional support, YLKN can extend its reach and bring the benefits of its community-based mental health model to new areas.
