Wildlife Recovery Australia Ltd is an Australian registered charity established in 2020 to conserve and protect native wildlife and ensure positive animal welfare outcomes through treatment, rehabilitation, research and education.

The organisation operates a growing network of specialist wildlife facilities, including Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital, Wildlife Recovery Australia Hospital (“Matilda”) and Byron Bay Raptor Recovery Centre. These facilities provide expert veterinary treatment and rehabilitation for sick, injured and orphaned native animals, support wildlife research and education, and build specialist capacity for emergency wildlife response.

Since commencing operations, Wildlife Recovery Australia has treated more than 13,000 native animals, including threatened species. Matilda, Australia’s first and only fully equipped mobile wildlife hospital, enables veterinary teams to provide immediate care during natural disasters, disease outbreaks and other wildlife emergencies. In 2026, Matilda travelled approximately 17,000 kilometres over 11 weeks as part of a national tour, collaborating with wildlife organisations across Australia, supporting local veterinary care and advocating for a coordinated national framework for wildlife protection and treatment.

Wildlife Recovery Australia works with veterinary professionals, wildlife carers, conservation organisations, researchers, universities, governments, communities and corporate partners to improve outcomes for Australian wildlife. Its activities also include public education, community engagement, advocacy, professional collaboration and the development of projects addressing emerging threats to wildlife.

The organisation’s future plans include establishing and supporting more wildlife hospitals and specialist facilities in areas of unmet need, expanding mobile veterinary and emergency-response capacity, strengthening research and education programs, and developing national partnerships that improve the coordination and long-term sustainability of wildlife care across Australia.

Through this work, Wildlife Recovery Australia aims to create a future in which Australia’s native wildlife can survive, recover and thrive.

Help Save our Wildlife

Australia’s wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth. But every day, native animals are injured, orphaned or caught in crisis, and for many, access to specialist veterinary care can mean the difference between life and death. Wildlife Recovery Australia is changing what’s possible for wildlife in need. We are building a national network of specialist wildlife veterinary services, helping ensure injured and vulnerable native animals can access expert care when and where they need it most. In less than six years, our teams have already treated more than 13,000 native animals . Today, we’re expanding that impact through specialist wildlife hospitals, mobile veterinary capability and recovery initiatives across Australia. And as new threats emerge, the need for specialist wildlife veterinary capacity has never been more important. The arrival of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in Australia is a stark reminder of how quickly wildlife can face a major health crisis — and why we need the expertise, equipment and facilities to respond. That’s where your support can make a difference. Your donation helps provide life-saving veterinary care, critical medical equipment, medicines and specialist facilities for wildlife in need — while strengthening our ability to respond when the next wildlife emergency strikes. It can mean treatment for an animal that might otherwise have nowhere to go. A second chance at recovery. And, wherever possible, a return to the wild where they belong. Australia’s wildlife is worth fighting for. Together, we can give more native animals that second chance — and build a future worth saving.
