**Sustainable Joy** is a nonprofit founded by Elizabeth Turner and Johanna Moonan in response to the Los Angeles wildfires. When the fires broke out on January 7, 2025, Johanna and Elizabeth were glued to the news, watching in horror as their city was engulfed in flames. As they exchanged texts about their desire to help the community, Johanna called Elizabeth at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, saying, "We have to do something!"

Determined to help, Elizabeth and Johanna decided to open a free shop in Johanna’s store, OpenClosit, located on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica. This shop would offer free essentials to families who had lost everything, becoming the first fire relief center on the west side of Los Angeles. Initially, they thought they might receive a few donations and help a small number of survivors. But with 180,000 Angelenos under evacuation orders, the need for aid was overwhelming, and more community members began seeking refuge at the free shop.

As the survivors flocked to OpenClosit, and the Santa Monica community responded with incredible generosity. Local businesses and individuals donated clothing, supplies, and time, and the relief center quickly gained traction on social media. Over the two months the center was open, it provided essential items to thousands of fire survivors.

As Angelenos continue to rebuild, Elizabeth and Johanna remain committed to connecting those who want to help with meaningful opportunities to make an impact in Los Angeles. Their vision for Sustainable Joy is to create lasting, sustainable support for the community while sparking joy and resilience in the face of adversity.

Whenever possible, we also seek to collect this type of feedback within our own team, where there is no power hierarchy, only different opinions and a great common goal.

Respect: there is no listening to people without respect. We assume everyone has a valuable viewpoint and an in-depth understanding of his/her own reality. We respect differences among cultures, regions, and biomes in order to maximize the impact of our support. We valorize and stimulate the protagonist place of each individual in the socio-environmental transformational process, as we believe that true change comes from the rank and file.

Trust: we trust the working capacity of each individual and each small group we support. We understand Casa Fund as a transitional space, not as a centralizing unit. We are a safe haven, we comfort the pain and uncertainties, ensuring the means to solutions, maximizing actions and opening pathways, but we are not the ones to carry out the projects.

Union: The sentence “union is strength” may sound like a cliché, but it is a motto for us. We aggregate and mobilize. The more people share our dreams of transformation, the greater will be our collective power.

Connection and collaboration: we exist to establish connections and promote collaboration. This does not mean we have to be always present or directly involved in all actions. For us, promoting joint work between two or more transformational agents is already super powerful! This way we manage to multiply our actions and actually have a significant impact on the world.

Buddhist International Relief NGO 'ThePromise' (Founder: Ven. Myojang) is often referred to as the 'Buddhist 119.' Its operational scope spans the entire globe. Since its establishment in 2008, ThePromise, a non-profit organization recognized by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) with special consultative status, has been dedicated to providing critical aid and support to communities worldwide affected by various disasters. The organization has aimed to be a representative relief entity for the Buddhist community, akin to the ‘Red Cross’ in the West and the ‘Red Crescent Society’ in the Islamic countries. To broaden its reach and appeal, it chose an English name with less religious connotation.

Since its founding, International NGO ThePromise has responded to global disasters such as: the 2010 Haiti earthquake, 2011 East Japan earthquake, 2015 Nepal earthquake, 2022 Ukraine conflict, and the 2023 Turkey earthquake. Domestically, it has aided in the 2017 Pohang earthquake, 2022 Donghae wildfires, the 2023 Gangneung wildfire and Yecheon flood, the 2024 flood in Daejeon Jeongbang Village and Jeju air crash at the Muan international airport. 

**Major Initiatives**

Our work encompasses a wide range of humanitarian and environmental initiatives:

- **Climate Crisis**: We introduced climate budgeting, support disaster response and climate adaptation for immigrant families, and develop educational tools for environmental sustainability. For example, we provided emergency relief through a local youth-led team during the Timor Leste floods and deployed the nation's first Disaster Welfare Assistance Team (DWAT) for five weeks to support shelters during the East Coast wildfires.
- **Mental Health** : We support global neighbors in crisis by providing psychological aid to disaster-affected individuals, helping them regain strength. Our International Disaster Psychological Support Team AEGIS, known for its global experience, operates extensively at disaster sites. Recognized by UNHCR, our "Family-based Disaster Response Board Game," developed with support from global gaming company, Electronic Arts (EA), enhances disaster response capabilities for migrant families in Korea.
- **Humanitarian Aid**: Conducting emergency relief operations for natural disasters and providing urgent food aid to communities affected by the Myanmar coup and the Ukraine conflict.

One Tree Planted engages and impacts populations all over the world. In just nine years, we have gotten over **100 million trees** in the ground through new and established relationships with over 463 planting partners. In 2022 alone, we planted over 52 million trees within 327 planting projects in 74 countries across six regions and have potentially sequestered more than 10 million tons of carbon over the next 20 years. Through these projects, we helped to:

- create 2,438 jobs,

- engage over 32,000 volunteers, and 
- restore 97,769 hectares of land. 

One Tree Planted has impacted populations at all levels. On a macro level, One Tree Planted has helped to reduce the adverse effects of carbon emissions, air pollution, and global warming. Providing support for people during natural disasters, cancer, education, and homeless. 

We provide immediate assistance and long support during natural disasters when people are forced to evacuate and/or their homes are destroyed leaving them in need of shelter, food, or water. 
We support cancer patients who are unable to pay for medical treatments, copayments, or after care assistance that may not be covered by their insurance. 
We support impoverished students who qualify for a higher education but cannot afford to pay tuition through grants and scholarships.  
We support the homeless by providing shelter, food, and water, as more people than ever are living on the streets without the basic necessities to survive. 
Our staff, volunteers, and those we serve work together to provide assistance to those in need due to circumstances beyond their control to empower the most vulnerable among us and improve their quality of life.

Fundación Origen is a nonprofit organization founded in 1991 in CHILE dedicated to holistic social transformation through education and agroecology.

Its main projects include the Pirque Agroecological School, the Natural Sanctuary Los Maitenes, the Origen Farmers Market, The Bodhisattva training and the Virginia Subercaseaux School. In times of need or disaster, Origen activates its relief programs for food and housing. All of these initiatives are interrelated and share the objective of providing concrete tools for generating individual, social and environmental transformation. 

Origen credits its growth as an organization to its open and compassionate response to a changing world, its commitment and deep care for all living beings and its willingness to engage in horizontal dialogue with several stakeholders across multiple projects. Each year, Origen directly impacts 600 children and thousands of families through all its programs and, thereby contributing to a more peaceful and equitable world.

1. Keep developing the Origen Farmers Market , which supports hundreds of small businesses and artisans from all over the country and enriches the vocational training of our students with "Production, processing and commercialization of healthy food" courses.

3. Restore agricultural land and forest, protect flora and fauna in the Natural Sanctuary of Río Claro, Origen´s second campus where local communities are inspired to preserve their land, practice agriculture and beekeeping in sustainable ways.

Marshall ROC -  Restoring Our Community  is a coalition of community organizations, funders, and government agencies bound together by the common interest: Helping our neighbors, particularly those who are most in need, recover from the Devastating Marshall Fire & Windstorms which destroyed over 1000K homes.  

Marshall ROC is led by its members, who are a dedicated community of volunteers and organizations, in collaboration with government representatives. Many organizations in the surrounding communities offered their help after the Marshall Fire. Coordinating these efforts is challenging, but important. Marshall ROC is structured as a Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG), which is a nationally recognized, tried-and-true method for coordinating limited money, muscle, and materials among multiple organizations, on behalf of individuals and communities impacted by disaster. The Marshall ROC Mission is to support and empower individuals and households affected by the Marshall Fire and windstorm to lead their own recoveries by identifying needs and coordinating assistance on their behalf

Marshall ROC is a collaborative coalition of existing agencies and all Marshall ROC related services will be provided without regard to race, creed, color, gender, disability, religious or political affiliation, documentation status, or sexual orientation. 

Disasters are, by their nature, overwhelming. If it wasn’t overwhelming, we’d call it an “inconvenience,” not a “disaster.” The Marshall Fire and Windstorm is overwhelming. Our neighbors lost hundreds of millions of dollars worth of property and belongings. So many individuals and organizations have rallied to help and it is inspiring to see how engaged and supportive the communities responding to this disaster have been. However, it is now clear the need is greater than the available resources. Marshall ROC and its members will work to help as many people as possible, while managing community expectations.
One of the most important efforts of Marshall ROC is the launch and opening of the Marshall Fire Recovery Center, which is a centralized Louisville, CO location dedicated to expediting the access and delivery of disaster related support, services and resources to fire survivors in Superior, Louisville and Unincorporated Boulder County as they navigate the complexity of their recovery. The Marshall Fire Recovery Center will house the Marshall ROC office and provide spaces for mental health, rebuilding and technical programs, and the network of professionals who are all helping to support the impacted community as well as to facilitate coordination and collaboration among local, national and governmental organizations. The Navigating Disaster for Boulder County program, operated by Lutheran Family Services – Rocky Mountains, will also be located at the Center. 
The Marshall ROC Marshall Fire Recovery Center is a testament to the power of community and our coalition of organizations. We / Marshall ROC felt it was important the financing of this Marshall Fire Recovery Center effort should be separate from donations previously collected so as to not detract from funds raised for the direct support of fire families, and we’re exceedingly grateful to the many organizations who have contributed so far to  help us launch the Recovery Center and effort:

The Hellenic Wildlife Care Association, H.W.C.A. (ANIMA) is a non-profit association with its main activity being the nursing and rehabilitation of wild animals in their natural environment. It was established in 2005, today being the largest and most prominent organization in Greece for wildlife care and rehabilitation. Each year ANIMA treats about 8,000 wild animals, many of which are rare or endangered, responds to thousands of citizens for issues concerning wildlife, collaborates with authorities, NGOs and stakeholders to address threats to wildlife, and mobilizes hundreds of volunteers. The number of incidents arriving at the organization's First Aid Station is increasing rapidly every year. In 2021, the admissions reached 8,300, and are increased by more than 30% compared to 2020.

ElephantRescue.Net, is 501(c)3 public charity based in Tulsa, OK. It received its nonprofit status in 2015.

Trucks With Room To Spare Inc is a nonprofit organization focused on public safety, disaster recovery and relief.

During Hurricane Michael in 2018 there was a desperate need, many relief groups and organizations were desperately asking for transportation help.

Transportation and supplies have always been a vital need in times of disaster, many organizations are small and distributing donated supplies, so the cost of transportation is out of reach.  Especially with donations coming in from many areas of the Country and World.

These organizations are nonprofits, church groups and community organizations, that work to fill the voids that FEMA and other organizations miss, and these groups stay in the areas long after the media leaves to help in the rebuild and clean-up process for the disaster victims.

We are a group of truck drivers that have come together because we believe that “old-school” values still exist in the trucking industry, and the need to help these families is important!  So, we formed Trucks With Room to Spare.

Trucks With Room to Spare is a nonprofit who works with fellow drivers to provide transportation, warehousing, and distribution of donated supplies for these hard-hit families and communities.  Through education and community outreach we also inspire to change the industry image as well as promote safety and giving back to the people we serve daily.

Because one pallet of supplies to a community that has none can help hundreds and a truckload can impact thousands!

Our community suffered a devastating blow with a huge wildfire that destroyed the entire town of Blue River, OR, many surrounding homes and businesses and threatens the McKenzie River watershed.  

Our non-profit served as the lead organization for disaster response and provides leadership in both economic and cultural restoration and renewal. 

Our communities are unincorporated, so long term progress relies on our community members and organizations like ours.

The RFSA's primary purpose is to provide tangible programs, initiatives, and advocacy that directly supports rural firefighters in their role safeguarding the people of New South Wales (NSW) during bushfire and other emergencies. Its unwavering commitment lies in serving its members and ensuring their vital contribution to the community is recognised and supported.

The RFSA offers an extensive range of operational and welfare support to rural firefighting volunteers, encompassing various initiatives such as sponsorship of training exercises and events, providing educational scholarships, organising RFSA Family Days, facilitating chaplaincy services, counselling, and family support, engaging in advocacy efforts, and funding a Brigade and District Grants Program.

These comprehensive offerings underscore the RFSA's commitment to enhancing the well-being and capabilities of firefighting volunteers.

With public support, the RFSA plays a crucial role in contributing to the resilience and effectiveness of Australia’s volunteer bush fire brigades.

The Redwood Empire Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief organization serving north coastal California from Sonoma County to the Oregon border. Since 1987, the Redwood Empire Food Bank has been helping our community through 11 innovative programs under three strategic initiatives – Every Child, Every Day, Senior Security and the Neighborhood Hunger Network. We respond to the immediate needs of people seeking help through the provision of healthy food and nutrition education. We pursue long-term solutions to food insecurity through public policy and the development of partnerships with civic, faith-based, corporate and government organizations and, most importantly, individuals in our community.

About our country

Bolivia is one of the 15th most biodiverse countries in the world. The variety of bio-geographical conditions of the country, have privileged it with various type of ecosystems and a very important ethnic and sociocultural diversity, with a wealth of 36 indigenous peoples that inhabit territories of global importance, such as the Amazon rainforest, the Andes, the Great American Chaco, among others.

But in addition to that, Bolivia is facing a very complicated environmental situation. The expansion of the agribusiness as one of the main models of economic development, mining, and large infrastructure projects, are contributing to the continuous deterioration of natural resources, putting at risk the ecosystems and the rights of the communities.

In the year 2022, the country ranked third among the 10 countries with the highest deforestation worldwide. This has put a lot of pressure over the 53 million hectares of Bolivian tropical forest. Also, the national economy has an alarming dependence on the exploitation of non-renewable natural resources, without considering the country’s greatest vulnerability to climate change.

Our mission

The Fundacion Socioambiental Semilla mission is to support community-based projects that contributes to the conservation of the Bolivian ecosystems.

Our main value is that we are a locally founded foundation that was created by Bolivian environmentalists, who believe the only way to protect our ecosystems is to make timely resources available to support local grassroots organizations that are facing the negative impact of environmental devastation, and at the same time, proposing just and sustainable alternatives to protect communities’ rights and territories in all the ecosystems of the country.

Fundación Semilla's mail goal is to make culturally sensitive funding available in local currency to community-based groups and small organizations who are the most vulnerable to environmental destruction, while also the main guardians of Bolivia's most important biodiversity regions. We have developed a financing structure to coordinate the reception of resources with a proven mechanism of local donations.

Our strategy consists of a solid comprehension of the local context and challenges that Bolivian communities face. This is possible thanks to the previous experience of our founding members, whom have been working over many years with communities and indigenous groups in different ecosystems across the country. 

As part of our strategy, our Foundation’s main programs are:

1. The Amazonia program, which supports projects and initiatives that promote the sustainability and conservation of the Bolivian Amazon.
2. The GAGGA (Global Alliance for Green and Gender Action) program, which supports projects related to Gender Just Climate Solutions, Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation, the protection of critical ecosystems and the strengthening of women's leadership.
3. The Blue Foresta program, which supports independent environmental journalism in Bolivia.
4. The Chaco and Pantanal program, which aims to support projects that solve problems caused by climate change, through Nature Based Solutions (NBS) initiatives in the Great American Chaco and the Pantanal of Bolivia.
