NextGen Initiatives on First 1000 Days

Undernutrition prevalence in the Philippines has shown almost no improvement over the past three decades. According to a 2019 report by the World Bank, one in three children (29%) younger than five years old suffered from stunting (2019), or being small in size for their age. An alarming magnitude of malnutrition and stunting can be catastrophic for a developing country’s future workforce and economy. According to the same World Bank report, a Filipino child with optimal nutrition will have greater cognitive development, stay in school longer, learn more in school, and have a brighter future as an adult, while undernutrition robs other children of their chance to succeed. The burden on the Philippine economy brought by childhood undernutrition was estimated at US$4.4 billion, or 1.5% of the country’s GDP, in 2015. Believing that good nutrition is a foundation for a country’s economic prosperity, the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) launched the Masustansyang Pagbubuntis, Masiglang Kamusmusan (MaMa) Model . The program is anchored on supporting a pregnant mother’s antenatal needs, as well as ensuring the newborn’s nutritional needs are met as the child completes his/her first 1,000 days of life Donation Costs: $40 will provide 1 mother with new born screening tests $50 will provide 1 child with nutritious meals for 4 months $500 will provide 1 mother with maternal health support such as laboratory services, antenatal checkup, vitamins $550 will provide 1 child with nutritious meals staring on the 7th month of child until his/her 24th month $1,000 will provide 1 mother and child with maternal health support (antenatal checkup, laboratory services, vitamins). Nutritious complementary food will be administered from 7th to 24th month of the child
