Mill Mountain Playhouse began in 1964, and within two decades was such an essential part of life in Roanoke that the theatre's need for a permanent home was a priority when the city began reviving abandoned spaces downtown. When Center in the Square, a home to several of the city's museums and arts agencies, opened in 1983—the playhouse, renamed Mill Mountain Theatre, was its anchor. In December 2024, longtime leader Ginger Poole retired from her position after 15 years. Credited with returning the organization to a cornerstone of the Roanoke arts scene after the recession, Poole handed over the reigns to Matt Shields as Managing Director beginning January 1, 2025.
The company has always prided itself on its earned credentials as a professional, year-round theatre and its roots in community and artistic excellence. The theatre's affiliation with regional, national, and international associations and conferences ensures high standards and production values, making available the best of America's actors to our local audiences.
