Isla Mar Research Expeditions is a non‑profit dedicated to advancing holistic island and marine science via rigorous research, outreach, and education. Founded in 2015 by Drs. Chelsea and Evan Tuohy during their graduate studies at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, Isla Mar has grown into a thriving community of over 15 professional staff, a vibrant youth education program, and a growing network of citizen scientists
Our Mission is to deepen appreciation and understanding of the ocean’s vital role in island ecosystems and coastal communities. We strive to demystify scientific concepts to encourage broad public engagement and advocacy, empowering individuals to act as stewards of their marine environments
Our Programs seek to engage our community in diverse ways. We educate the next generation of ocean stewards through our youth education program, which offers immersive learning experiences tailored to each developmental stage for local students aged 5-17. Our Seed Fund supports aspiring island scientists with scholarships, training, and mentorship, while our citizen science initiatives engage community members in monitoring the ecological health of the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve.
With your support, Isla Mar can ensure the sustainability of our community programs!
