Pró-Onça is a Brazilian nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving large carnivores and their habitats, empowering local communities, and mitigating the impacts of climate change across Latin America. By combining science, storytelling, and community engagement, Pró-Onça promotes coexistence between humans and wildlife, ensuring that nature and people can thrive together.
Its mission is to conserve biodiversity while advancing sustainable practices and education. Guided by a long-term vision for a balanced and resilient planet, Pró-Onça works at the intersection of environmental conservation, women’s empowerment in science, and climate action.
IMPACT AREAS
- Wildlife Conservation: Protecting endangered species, especially jaguars and pumas, through habitat restoration, scientific research, and human–wildlife conflict mitigation in Brazil’s Cerrado biome.
- Empowering Communities: Strengthening local livelihoods through sustainable agriculture, ecotourism, and renewable energy solutions that promote resilience and coexistence with nature.
- Women in Science: Advancing gender equality in conservation through STEM education, leadership training, and advocacy that empowers women and girls as environmental leaders.
- Audiovisual Storytelling for Conservation: Producing documentaries, short films, and digital narratives that amplify local voices, inspire global audiences, and drive action for biodiversity and climate justice.
WHY IT MATTERS
When a jaguar disappears, entire ecosystems are at risk. Protecting apex predators like jaguars safeguards hundreds of other species and helps maintain the natural balance that supports us all.
