At ReFOCUS Media Labs, our mission is to empower asylum seekers and refugees by equipping them with modern media skills to overcome the challenges they face, such as limited access to education, language barriers, financial constraints, mental health support, skills training and job placement.

Through our three Media Labs (Lesvos, Athens, Krakow) workshops and original content productions on location (Amsterdam, Berlin, Athens, Krakow) we provide comprehensive education in photography, filmmaking, audio engineering, and graphic design. Moreover, we actively collaborate with our students in the production of impactful dramatic films and documentaries.

Established in 2017 in Lesvos, Greece as a pilot project when we supported the residents of the infamous Moria refugee camp. in 2019 we officially registered ReFOCUS Media Labs as a foundation in Poland, and started formalizing our work. In 2022 we expanded our efforts by adding new media labs in Athens (GR) and Krakow (PL).  Athens was established to support refugees who struggled to secure access to education and job placement in the Greek system, and Krakow was created to support the massive influx of Ukrainian refugees who fled to Poland after the full-scale Russian invasion. Our work throughout our global network of media creation labs demonstrates our commitment to empowering our community members, and ensuring they have a seat at the table in determining our present and future direction. 

Our mission is to transform lives through education, career training, and psychosocial support, and ultimately sustainable employment. 

In Greece, we primarily work with minors and young adults, who are either stuck in the asylum system or struggling to integrate after receiving minimal asylum protection.  In Poland, our focus groups are women and young adults who fled the war, and now put down roots in Poland.  A key highlight of our training is the creation of professional portfolios, an essential tool that enables our beneficiaries to effectively showcase themselves to potential employers. This part of our program is particularly important as many refugees arriving in Europe have faced educational disparities due to conflict, poverty or discrimination in their home countries. Even those who have a university degree often struggle to be recognized in Europe as education systems in their home countries often fail to meet EU standards. As a result, many higher education graduates are forced to adapt and accept employment well below their skill and education level. In most cases this leads to exploitation on the European labor market.

Our programming aims to break the cycle of disadvantage that refugees and asylum seekers encounter in the labor market. By providing a platform for our students to showcase their original work, share their stories, and employ them as teachers, lab coordinators and co-creators we empower them to become skilled professionals within the global media industry. But our work goes beyond the technical training by providing foundational support and safe spaces for people with refugee backgrounds to be accepted and flourish. Put simply, we treat the whole human being. 

Since our establishment in 2017, we have successfully certified hundreds of media students, produced feature films and music videos; internationally published original photography and graphic design, and collaborated with mainstream media partners on investigative reportage.

We've been featured in National Geographic, collaborated on investigative reports with Forensic Architecture, Human Rights Watch, BBC Newsnight, Aljazeera, the Guardian, and BBC Panorama, and also produce our own original podcast "Fractured", which focuses upon refugee issues and human rights violations in Europe and around the world.

What sets ReFOCUS apart is our dedication to mentoring students beyond the traditional classroom setting. We actively collaborate with our students to create compelling films and documentaries based on their own scripts and concepts. Since 2019 ReFOCUS has produced several films directed, filmed and edited by our students and alumni including  “Even After Death”, “Nothing About Us Without Us”, “Dancing Bells”, “Dead End”, Interview" and "Erantzun", all of which were written and directed by community members. 

“Stitches” - our latest film is currently in post production and will premiere in March 2024 at Movies that Matter Film Festival. Our films and work has been internationally recognised and showcased at prestigious film festivals worldwide, including the Human Rights Film Festival Berlin (DE), Movies that Matter Film Festival (Hague, NL), CPH:DOX (Copenhagen, DK), Melbourne International Film Festival (AU), Rotterdam International Film Festival (NL), IDFA (Amsterdam, NL), New Delhi International Film Festival (India), the World International Film Festival (Amsterdam, NL), and the (in)Justice Film Festival (Chicago, US) and many more. 

In recent years we have expanded to reach larger audiences and provide even more community members with employment and pathways to develop their own careers as freelance media creators. We also take a local approach to ensure the settled communities we work with have foundational support. A great example of this local approach is our Art Under Pressure Arts Festival, which was inaugurated in Athens, Greece (May 2023). The festival provided a platform for artists from Athens, both from within our community and the greater cultural community, to showcase their music, art, performance, design, photography, films and critical reportage on issues the community faces. In 2024 the festival will travel throughout Europe and North America in an effort to activate new local communities of artist who can learn from one another and create together. 

At the heart of our organization is a fundamental belief that individuals can make a difference in the issues they see in the world. Our extensive experience in the field working on the front line of the "refugee crisis" in Europe proves that civil actions can have a massive impact in the lives of people at risk, especially when media and governments claim otherwise. These challenges are not intractable, rather they are opportunities for us to think creatively, and work collectively to ensure we build the societies we know are possible. 

And so we remain committed to helping people with real lives in crisis develop the real skills needed to pursue the real futures they envision. No matter how many times the fast news frames people in need as "takers" and "burdens", we are proving every day that it is possible to cultivate givers who enhance and power our society into the future.

Since its inception in 2006, Bayimba has been working towards the sustainability of its programming that has shaped Uganda’s cultural landscape and influenced a vibrant creative industry within the East African region. Championing platforms like the Bayimba International Festival, the Kampala International Theatre Festival, Amakula International Film Festival and DOADOA: a regional network of professional stakeholders. Over the years, more than 5,000 artists have shared stage at the Bayimba events, and more than 15,000 industry professionals have been skilled for the market through the Bayimba Academy.

Through its hard work, careful saving and individual givers – the organisation managed to acquire Lunkulu Island - a leafy 92-acre semi-attached island in the midst of a lush environment at the shores of Lake Victoria in Mukono and Buikwe districts, with an idea of developing it to become a cutting-edge multi-media arts centre that uniquely serves the creative community from across the globe. 

From 2018, Lunkulu Island purposely accommodates Bayimba’s growing annual festivals and events, contributing to the long-term sustainability of Uganda’s creative arts. The development of physical structures is deemed necessary to further provide artists with a holistic safe-space that will enhance innovation, collaboration and creative development in East Africa. With a combined community of all mediums of art, professionally presented in one space where visitors can get a comprehensive artistic experience, creating jobs for the youth, preserving the local culture to a year-round tourism eco-system – the Bayimba Centre will be a hotspot for entrepreneurs where art, culture, and sustainability intersect—a place where creativity knows no bounds.

But viewership has never been our end goal.

God raised him from the dead and now, by grace, offers as a free gift eternal life to all who follow Christ, by faith, as their Lord and Savior. That is why salvation can be found in Christ alone.

A BRIEF HISTORY & MISSION
Developing Artists (DA) teaches undervalued teens to relentlessly fight for positive social change through practical application of the performing arts.  We help diverse students to proclaim themselves as artists and activists, to find their place and their connection in their community, and to bring about positive social change through participation in the arts. 

DA offers rigorous theater education to underserved high school students (aged 13-19) in the New York City metropolitan area and produces REBEL VERSES Youth Arts Festival. Our goal is to provide young people with professional performing arts training that will equip them with valuable artistic and life skills, and the confidence to take action in their lives. 
DA was founded in 1999 with a simple act of protest against youth discrimination. Following Artistic Director Jill DeArmon's experiences teaching performing arts in NYC public schools and established studios, she was astonished by the lack of freedom students were given to create and empower and felt they were censored rather than amplified and trusted. While teaching at one of these institutions, she was threatened to either stay and stick to the status quo or be fired. Jill told her class that she was leaving, because she could not accept ageism towards her students. Every student decided to follow her out and the first DA Ensemble was born. In collaboration with the ensemble, Jill offered classes where teens could be heard, with support to create original work that tackles important social issues. She committed to empowering students through art by giving them practical tools to express themselves and learn to collaborate.

THE NEED OR PROBLEM WE WORK TO ADDRESS 
We impact students by creating a forum to navigate life's increasing challenges (e.g. age discrimination, social injustices, gender inequality, institutional racism, economic disparity, sexism); to use their voice in dealing with these issues; and channel that energy into self-expression and self-confidence. DA has a track record of engaging positively with those who face significant barriers in their daily lives. 

Developing Artists serves students aged 13 to 19 from all five boroughs of New York. 35% of our students identify as Latinx, 40% as African American, 20% as Caucasian, and 5% as Asian/other. Most of our students face socio-economic challenges; many experience physical, sexual or emotional abuse. We are committed to invite and include all of these young artists so their voices can be heard, their lives healed and their lifetime trajectory changed. 

We can confidently say that participation in our programs has a life-changing long-term impact on the young people we serve – 95% of whom go onto college. We know that our students subsequently utilize their arts training in their careers in a variety of different ways – as professional artists, writers, producers, drama therapists, etc. In our recent past, we helped DA students get into notable high school and college performing arts programs, and some have gone on to study at prestigious institutions such as The Juilliard School, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, New School, Royal Conservatory of Scotland, Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts, Fordham University, Rutgers University, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, AMDA, Elon College and Yale Drama.

In the past, we charged for classes while providing full or partial scholarships for students in need (about 85% of students received a full or partial scholarship). In 2018, Developing Artists began making all classes 100% FREE so that we could abolish this financial barrier once and for all, and serve those students who were overlooked by so many other programs.

As emphasized in our mission, equity, access and inclusion are some of our primary objectives.  The last three years also helped solidify the identity of DA: Our ensemble engages with individuals on the frontline of important social issues then utilizing various performing arts, we bring to light these issues to a broader audience as we seek allies along the way to impact positive social change. Developing Artists was tapped to perform in numerous events including: We Rise: A Celebration of Resistance at the Delacorte Theatre (Public Forum in Collaboration with Resistance Revival Chorus), New York Women’s Foundations Celebrating Women Breakfast 2019, City Hall rally hosted by New York 4 Culture and Art to protest the proposed 6 millions dollar cut in cultural and arts funding. Developing Artists’ trajectory is leading us to connect and work with many social justice organizations for our future projects. 

Through the years, DA has directly served over 3,000 students and thousands of audience members. DA fostered a community of diverse artist citizens and maintains ongoing connections with our alumni network, some of which return as Teaching Artists. One alumnus, Julian Elijah Martinez, recently made his Broadway debut in NETWORK starring Bryan Cranston and was one of the stars of WU-TANG: AN AMERICAN SAGA on Hulu. Another alumna, Jessica Asch, Program Creator and Lead Clinician at Shine MSD, Inc, became a licensed arts and drama therapist whose work with at-risk youth has included developing and implementing a creative arts therapy program around collective healing in Parkland, Florida.

REBEL VERSES Youth Arts Festival
Founded in 2001, REBEL VERSES is a 2-week festival of performances by some of the best youth companies in NYC & beyond. This festival was born out of the dire need here in New York City for new voices in theater.  It is a journey into the unapologetic, unrelenting creativity of the next generation. Since the festival’s inception, REBEL VERSES has provided youth companies with the opportunity to collaborate and network with their peers and prominent artists, encouraging the development of new works in theater through this two-week event.  In 2017, Developing Artists began a partnership with the notable Vineyard Theatre to co-produce REBEL VERSES. The Vineyard Theatre (108 East 15th) hosts RV at its 132-seat off-Broadway venue and provides technical, management, audience development and promotional support, resulting in increased visibility, participation and audiences for REBEL VERSES.

Global Girl Media trains young BIPOC women to stand behind the camera and at the center of the story.

You can’t be what you can’t see. Our media tells us a lot about who we are and the stories we believe about ourselves. Yet, a female POV is under-published, under-broadcast and under-streamed compared to a male POV. Now more than ever, women and girls of color need a place at the table to change the narrative.

We change the storytellers so they can change the world.

Global Girl Media empowers young women to bring their often-overlooked perspectives onto the global media stage. By turning up the volume of girls’ voices globally, GGM promotes freedom of expression and strengthens substantive journalism that addresses historically marginalized voices. We do this while also building self-esteem, leadership capacity, and 21st century skills. Founded in 2010, we are currently active in South Africa, Kosovo, Chicago, Los Angeles, Greece, London and the Bay Area.

GGM believes training young women of color in digital media journalism is important to developing strong, healthy communities. For youth, particularly young women, education and self expression are key to changing the entrenched stereotypes and values that hold them back and keep them from succeeding in the fields of media and technology. GGM intentionally works exclusively with girls to provide a safe, nurturing environment where they can lead, speak their minds, and learn how to close the gender/technology divide.

GGM partners with schools, after-school programs, other NGO’s, and community centers to select girls for our programs and help sustain their work. In addition to four-week summer trainings, Global Girls participate in year-long mentorships with leading journalists, filmmakers, and new media mavericks. In this way, we provide both short-term and long-term support to low-income, marginalized girls around the world.

Starlight Projects Foundation

JustMedia is an open-access online platform that catalogs, preserves, and centralizes media content related to criminal justice.

JustMedia prioritizes the leadership of people directly impacted by the criminal justice system, including incarcerated individuals, returning citizens, and their communities, and people who are excluded from the political, economic, and social institutions that shape their lives. Given the stark racial disparity in mass incarceration, JustMedia’s staff and Board are largely comprised of people of color. In more broadly considering people who have been excluded from the political, economic, and social institutions that shape their lives, we intentionally consider race, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, and agency in making decisions around Board development and staff hiring. JustMedia has already cultivated an intersectional community and expects to hire new staff members from our community through competitive processes with a view toward equity. JustMedia has maintained partnerships, developed media literacy focused curriculum, facilitated workshops, and sustained relationships with those utilizing our database and resources.

Throughout the last year, we were able to grow our archive database from 719 films on our to 1,264 films. Additionally, we have created several resource videos that serve as navigation tools for visitors as they are researching our database. We have been able to train lawyers, advocates, educators, and filmmakers on how to use our archive using these videos and presentations.

The Association for Quality Journalism was established on April 30, 2011, is an independent, nonprofit organization with a mission of promoting civic awareness and improving the media environment. The main tasks of the association are advancing the development of citizen media, empowering citizen journalists, rewarding high quality in-depth reporting, enhancing research on civil society, and organizing various activities in line with its mission statement.

In order to promote its mission, core concepts, and innovative practices, the association publishes books on relevant themes every year. Examples include “The Era of a Public Commission for Journalism is Coming: the Meaning and Prospects of weReport,” “The Rise and Revelations of Data Journalism,” “Social Media and Journalism,” “The Relativism of Entrepreneurial Journalism,” “Local Revolution: New Wave of Taiwan Community Media.” All the books are extremely well-received and valued by the communication and education communities.

Project Recover is a nonprofit organization focused on locating, recovering, and repatriating missing-in-action service members. 

For over 30 years, Project Recover has been the nation’s leading citizen-led, non-profit organization to search, locate, document, recover, and repatriate the over 81,500 American service members missing in action and to bring recognition and closure to the estimated 5,000,000 MIA Gold Star family members. Project Recover is the only non-governmental organization (NGO) with full vertical capabilities in the POW/MIA recovery space, which includes operational missions in both underwater and land environments. 

In 2012, Project Recover partnered with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of Delaware’s School of Earth, Ocean, and Environment. These collaborations, along with Project Recover’s partnership with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) and Legion Underseas Services, have enabled Project Recover to document dozens of war sites associated with hundreds of MIAs.

Project Recover has completed over 100 missions in 24 countries, discovered and documented more than 75 aircraft associated with MIAs, developed a growing database of more than 700 cases associated with more than 3,000 MIAs, accounted for over 80 missing-in-action service members, repatriated 17 American heroes, and anticipate the identification of 26 MIAs by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) by the end of 2025.

We organize the Leiden International Film Festival (LIFF), an annual event that celebrates the power of film.

The Leiden International Film Festival (LIFF) is an annual event that celebrates the power of film by providing a platform for talented storytellers to showcase their work on the big screen. LIFF aims to present an artistically high-quality program linked to innovative visions, scientific ideas, and socially relevant themes in a creative, playful, and fresh way. The festival seeks to engage a diverse and curious audience, encouraging them to interact with each other and the world around them through the medium of film.

Over the course of 11 days, LIFF showcases a wide range of films by both established and emerging filmmakers. The festival takes place in cinemas, museums, and unexpected venues like swimming pools, offering a unique and immersive film-watching experience. In addition to film screenings, LIFF organizes mini-lectures, pop-up exhibitions, film events combined with live music, and special themed programs.

LIFF's mission is to provide a valuable and distinctive cultural experience to its visitors by curating a diverse film program and employing a creative approach that makes relevant and innovative stories from around the world accessible. The festival forms partnerships with various disciplines and organizations, including schools, museums, theaters, and music venues, to enhance the film experience and foster connections between visitors and artistic, social, and scientific themes from across the globe. LIFF aims to contribute to the impact of film in the Netherlands.

Looking ahead, LIFF has introduced three new program pillars: Independent, Emerging, and Extraordinary. These pillars serve to provide focus and improve marketing and communication opportunities. The festival continues to evolve and promises to be a true spectacle in 2023, with renewed elements in its program.

The Independent pillar includes the American Indie Competition and showcases films by independent filmmakers worldwide, as well as acclaimed films from prestigious festivals and previews of upcoming releases. The Emerging pillar features the First Feature Competition, dedicated to emerging talent and debut films by promising filmmakers. The Extraordinary pillar encompasses the Bonkers! Competition, which brings together unconventional and daring films that defy categorization. Under the Extraordinary pillar, LIFF also offers special screenings and events in unique locations, such as the Hortus Botanicus, museums, and even swimming pools. These events include film screenings accompanied by live music, cinematic wine and beer tastings, and more.

Overall, LIFF strives to be a dynamic and innovative film festival, pushing artistic boundaries and providing a platform for diverse perspectives, independent filmmakers, and emerging talent. The festival aims to contribute to the film industry, both nationally and internationally, by expanding its reach and maintaining its commitment to quality programming and audience engagement.

East African Documentary Film Fund- Docubox was established in 2013 by Kenyan filmmaker Judy Kibinge, who felt the need to establish a space where  talented, driven, and focused East African filmmakers with important and unique stories to tell, could find the environment and support they needed to produce high impact independent films. She was soon joined by a band of committed colleagues, and in 2014 dispatched their very first production grants to just six films, three of which have gone on to screen at major festivals and win awards around the world.  Initially, Docubox's primary support came in the form of grants thanks to our longest-running supporter, The Ford Foundation. Over time, Docubox has grown to offer much more to our growing community of filmmakers whose collective skills and accolades have done us proud. Ten years on, we disperse film grants, host film labs and masterclasses, and create opportunities for filmmakers to network and support each other through numerous meet-ups and film events. And thanks to our small (but warm and inviting!) co-working space, each day is a chance to host meetings, previews and rough cut screenings at our offices on request. We've succeeded thus far because we believe in the power of story and tirelessly scour the world for opportunities to bring back to our filmmaking community. We raise and distribute substantial development and production funding, create scholarship programmes and opportunities, curate regular events and screenings and much more. Docubox's goal is to have a region where independent factual films made by a growing and networked community of talented filmmakers are innovatively distributed, urgently watched, discussed, and demanded by citizens whose lives and views of themselves change for the better as a result. To date we have held nearly 75 workshops and labs with over several thousand attendants. We have screened nearly 200 films to audiences of over 53,000 and raised and regranted over $750,000 in cash support. And guess what? We're just getting started! We'd like to build a home for our African filmmakers in Nairobi – a place they can live, work, play, create, gather, and get inspired. A center with cinemas, auditoriums, restaurants, resident studios, and resource rooms. We'd also like to raise an endowment to help us stick around for another ten years.  Our goal is to raise at least $30 million over the next few years for this. Just how much is $30 Million in the context of film today? A spirited marketing campaign for a single shortlisted documentary film during the Academy of Motion Picture and Sciences awards season can cost at least that much. And did you know that in 2019, the inaugural Game of Thrones prequel pilot episode cost $30 Million – before it was canceled? But despite all this, we still acknowledge that it is no small amount and realize it constitutes a huge and ambitious dream for us - but we are willing to go the distance to make that dream come true. Media4Change is a non-profit organization supporting environmental education in schools, universities and other educational facilities. By providing environmental films and accompanying educational materials we raise awareness and show solutions to many of our problems.**

What are the solutions for a positive future? How do we achieve substantial CO2 reductions, the energy transition, climate and environmental protection? What is needed in order to create a regenerative, sustainable future for all?

Founded by producer, filmmaker and environmental activist Carl-A. Fechner, Media4Change is an international competence center for environmental media benefitting from Carl´s extensive expertise: With over 35 years of experience in audiovisual impact films, he is determined to advance knowledge and action both around environmental and social change for a better future. His goal is to reach as many people as possible worldwide on a variety of platforms with selected films and accompanying public impact campaigns, and to disseminate and share knowledge about sustainability.

Based in Dakar, Senegal, RAW Material Company is a center for art, knowledge and society.  It is an initiative involved with curatorial practice, artistic education, residencies, knowledge production, and archiving of theory and criticism on art. It works to foster appreciation and growth of artistic and intellectual creativity in Africa. The programme is trans-disciplinary and is equally informed by literature, film, architecture, politics, fashion, cuisine and diaspora. RAW Material Company is made of:  - RAW Base, a resource centre specialized in contemporary art;  - RAW Académie, an experimental study programme for artistic thinking and production  - Ker Issa, residencies and studios for artists, curators, authors and researchers.

Democratizing cinema in Dakar, Senegal, Centre Yennenga's missions cover cinematographic training in filmmaking and postproduction

Centre Yennenga's missions cover cinematographic training in post-production, creation, distribution and diffusion. It is the first hub dedicated to cinema based in Dakar, Senegal. It also has a socio-cultural mission by democratizing cinema and raising awareness on how images can shape our visions to the world. By creating the first post-production studio in Dakar and the first free training program dedicated to post-production jobs, the Yennenga Center gives filmmakers the opportunity to produce their films from A to Z on the continent and thus address the crucial issues of self-narration. Post-producing films in Dakar is therefore also a way to reduce the production costs of a film and we can imagine that this will eventually contribute to boosting independent film production on the continent, without it being dependent on external funds that only allow the onerous costs associated with post-production of films abroad.
