Conservation

BOS Foundation is the world’s largest orangutan conservation organisation with two rescue centres in Kalimantan, Indonesia. BOS USA is the official US office for BOS Foundation and is responsible for raising funds through donations and adoptions, and awareness here in the US. The BOS Foundation operates in two of the remaining regions of wild orangutans and uses its expertise to implement large scale orangutan conservation. Our vision is to create a world where all wild, rehabilitated, and continuous care-dependent Bornean orangutans live in sustainably managed forests or sanctuaries, while also working to save and restore more habitat so the species can thrive.

To date, BOS Foundation has released more than 950 orangutans back to the wild since 1991, currently cares for more than 300 orangutans across two rehabilitation centres, protects over 1.1 million acres of rainforest, and supports dozens of indigenous communities through community development programmes.

Current conservation projects include Sebangau National Park, a giant peat forest and home to over 6000 wild orangutans, the second largest landscape for orangutan populations in Central Kalimantan. The IUCN Red List records 37 mammal species inhabiting this unique ecosystem. Past canalisation has altered peat characteristics, disrupting ecological balance. Restoration of Sebangau’s high-conservation-value forest, in collaboration with local authorities and communities, is vital.

BOS is also expanding and improving Sanctuary Islands for unreleasable orangutans at Nyaru Menteng II (NMII) Rescue Centre, the primary site of the world renowned Orangutan Jungle School TV series. Unreleasable orangutans often have histories of severe physical and psychological trauma, such as our unreleasable hero Kopral who had both arms amputated after being electrocuted in captivity. The Islands are built so that every unreleasable orangutan can still have a high quality of life, free from an enclosure, in a forested environment as close to a natural existence as possible.
