Barangay Dance Company is a San Francisco-based Philippine folk dance organization, established in August 1987 by the company's late Founder and Artistic Director, Bonifacio Valera, Jr.
Barangay Dance Company's mission is to preserve the rich Filipino cultural heritage through the arts of Philippine folk dance and music. Through presenting, outreach, and research of Philippine folk dance and music, Barangay endeavors to promote awareness, understanding and appreciation of Filipino culture within the communities that the Company serves.
Barangay Dance Company offers two active programs:
(1) Open Rehearsals, which are year-round FREE, beginner-friendly and family-friendly. Rehearsals are where we train to build our foundational movements, learn new dances, and prepare for performances.
(2) Summer Workshops program is a series of four introductory workshops to Philippine folk dance and music. Summer Workshops for 2026 are scheduled on Saturday afternoons between May to August. Enrollment will open in late March 2026.
Barangay is also available for booking upon request and availability, providing interactive dance workshops and performances around the Bay Area.
Most recently in 2025, Barangay Dance Company performed for the San Francisco Public Librar; in Los Angeles as part of Malaya Filipino-American Dance Arts' KAPWA KALEIDOSCOPE showcase; and at KQED in celebration of Filipino American History Month.
In 2025, we lost our late Founder and Artistic Director, fondly known as Kuya Bon. Providing nearly four decades of music, dance, and knowledge shared with the Bay Area community, Kuya Bon was central to the beginnings of many folk dance practitioners, and we are determined to continue learning, teaching, and performing Philippine folk dance— and especially encouraging the joy of dance.
As we approach 40 Years of Barangay Dance Company in 2027, we need every bit of support to help us towards a celebration of the lifework and legacy of Kuya Bon, and four decades of Barangay Dance Company— including multiple generations of dancers, friends, and community who have shared the stage together.
Your support will help us sustain our on-going programs, help us acquire resources, and move us closer to our 40th Anniversary celebration.
