We counter isolation and food insecurity within the Asian elderly community by delivering culturally thoughtful meals & love notes

Donate to support Asian Elderly with care packages of culturally meaningful food that are thoughtfully sourced and curated, then assembled inside uniquely illustrated brown bags with handwritten notes attached in the Elderly's native language. These are all hand-delivered to our homebound Elderly recipients to counter the loneliness and isolation they experience.

Heart of Dinner was founded by romantic couple Yin Chang and Moonlynn Tsai over a shared love for language and food. Their late-night conversations about the global impact of COVID-19 and the heightened racism towards Asian Americans, especially towards the Elderly community, soon became questions around how to create uplifting change that bridge cultural divides and heal communities.

On April 1st 2020, the duo cooked the first-ever Heart of Dinner hot lunches for those most vulnerable around Manhattan's Chinatown area, with a focus on homebound elders who've historically been overlooked by society where they are rarely allocated resources and access to basic necessities for survival. Immediately after its inception, Heart of Dinner's blueprint works in a way that purchases culturally thoughtful and senior-friendly hot dishes and groceries to support in the local small businesses' Covid-19 recovery process. With the help of their values-aligned restaurant partners, a thriving community of volunteers, and incredible donors, Heart of Dinner has been able to expand its reach throughout the different boroughs in NYC.

Equally as important as the meals, Heart of Dinner counters isolation and loneliness within the Asian Elderly population. With the talk of depression often stigmatized in Elderly immigrant generations, Heart of Dinner's mission is to provide comfort, warmth, cheer, and a feeling of belonging in a thoughtful and holistic way that respects and honors the cultural nuances. Since April 1st, 2020, handwritten notes of love and encouragement in the Elderly's native languages have been included with each meal; notes that say "We are thinking of you and we love you!" With the tremendous help of thousands of volunteers, Heart of Dinner is able to deliver culturally thoughtful foods that are assembled inside care packages that are made with uniquely hand-illustrated bags attached with the handwritten notes.

Heart of Dinner has been delivering care packages every Wednesday for nearly three years and has shown up for the Elderly with intention and dedication, never once missing a Wednesday (even showing up during holidays, snowstorms, and hailstorms!) With the rapid development of and focus on personal well-being in individualistic societies, people are now more aware of the detrimental effects of poor mental health and mental illnesses than ever before. However, as members of the Asian Diaspora, there are often strong cultural underpinnings related to our mental health experiences that go unaddressed. Mental health issues do not exist in individuals only, and this is especially true for those who come from cultures that value collectivism. Experiences shaped by cultural ideals that value face, achievement, and filial piety are interwoven in the fabric of our understanding of the world. Intertwined with generations of exposure to trauma, these ideals, while not inherently unhealthy, are often expressed in ways that create dissonance for the children of the diaspora who live in increasingly globalized societies. It is apparent that there is a generational and cultural rift in many Asian families, with mental health woven through both overt confrontations and unspoken grievances as a result.

AMHC hopes to help bridge those divides.

We do not need, or want, to do away with centuries of beloved culture and tradition for the sake of mental health. We at AMHC believe in integrating our shared backgrounds with the progressive ideals of emotional well-being and mental health - expressing collectivist ideals while respecting the agency of the individual. It all begins with understanding. Through projects such as our Facebook group, resource library, video web-series, and meetup groups, we hope to not only provide mental health support, but also facilitate the difficult conversations we need to have to move forward together.

Save the Children is India’s leading independent child rights NGO. It works in 12 Indian states and has reached more than 10.1 million Indian children since 2008. They run programs in the remotest corners of India and urban areas to provide quality education and healthcare, protection from harm and abuse and life-saving aid during emergencies to children. Their COVID-19 response work focuses on:

Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action (SNEHA)

SNEHA works at the community level to empower women and slum communities to be catalysts of change in their own right and collaborate with existing public health systems and health care providers to create sustainable improvements in urban health. Their COVID-19 response activities include:

Gramalaya Trust

Gramalaya was established in 1987 with the goal of working for the amelioration of socially downtrodden people under the integrated rural development approach. Currently, Gramalaya is working in five Southern States including Tamilnadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Pondicherry. Their COVID-19 activities include:

MAMTA Health Institute for Mother and Child

MAMTA is a three decades old registered not for profit organization. Guided by innovation and implementation research, Health Systems Strengthening to reach the last mile is at the heart of their work. During COVID-19, MAMTA's response includes:

•	Procuring PPE kits and other sanitation requirements for the ground-level healthcare workers.
•	Disseminating health information to bridge the knowledge gap and address major myths and misconceptions
•	Provide food rations to households with elderly, pregnant women and most economically challenged families who do not have any source of income

Caritas Manila 

Caritas Manila, through its Caritas Damayan Program, works through local parishes to respond to the COVID-19 crisis. Project Damayan needs funds for food relief packs and hygiene kits. Caritas is also looking at expanding support to include livelihood assistance for beneficiaries with selling experience. With the capital assistance, beneficiaries are given the freedom to propose his/her desired livelihood. When the proposal is feasible and can be helpful to the family of the beneficiary, they will be provided a capital assistance worth five thousand pesos (5,000) for each family.

Philippine Business for Social Progress 

PBSP's COVID-19 efforts are focused in 3 areas:

• Food pack distribution: Php 750/$15 a pack, with rice, vegetables, dressed chicken/fish, monggo, eggs, sourced from partner farmer cooperatives
• Reusable masks sponsorship via Mask4AllPH: a pack of 10 face masks (P300/$6) for urban poor families. These masks are made by community sewers from Quezon City and Cavite.
• Learning continuity: P25K/school package ($500) consisting of 100 reams of bond paper (or ink when needed) plus the year-long data load for 2 teachers for selected schools.

Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation

PDRF helps families that were economically displaced by the pandemic through distribution of groceries/grocery vouchers. For this, PDRF engages with other non profits such as Caritas Manila and ABS CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc.

Save the Children (Philippines)

Save the Children provides specialized support to different areas in the Philippines depending on the priorities identified by the communities. These are determined through needs assessment via consultation and online surveys. Areas of support include hygiene kits, installation of handwashing facilities, meals for frontliners, medical supplies, and personal protective equipment or PPEs. Save the Children also provides information, education, and communication materials on good hygiene, health, education, child protection, parenting tips, and at-home-activities to help families cope with the crisis.

Teach for the Philippines

Teach for the Philippines raises funds for Learning Community Microgrants for partner schools. Microgrants typically funds school-based remediation programs, capacity building programs for teachers, and bridging programs for disadvantaged students. Grants also support mobile data subsidies, purchase of Wifi modems and additional printer ink cartridges.

COVID-19 Relief Fund: Philippines

We use cash transfers to increase immunization rates in Nigeria.

Childhood vaccines prevent an estimated 2 to 3 million deaths every year. They are recognized as one of the most cost-effective child health interventions in low-income countries. Yet, an estimated 19.4 million infants around the world did not receive routine vaccinations in 2018. In Nigeria, 40% of under-five deaths are from vaccine-preventable diseases – low immunisation rates are a significant contributor to its high under-five mortality rate (120 deaths per 1,000 live births). North West Nigeria, where the program operates, is the region with the lowest vaccination coverage in Nigeria.

My Dog Is My Home's mission is to increase access to shelter and housing for people experiencing homelessness with animals.

My Dog Is My Home is a national nonprofit dedicated to increasing access to shelter and housing for people experiencing homelessness with companion animals. By securing their ability to maintain their most important relationships and find adequate shelter, we ensure every family’s right to build a home.

We assist service providers like homeless shelters in expanding their programming to allow humans and their companion animals to remain together. My Dog Is My Home’s programs currently fall into three categories: storytelling, community building, and technical assistance.

STORYTELLING
Storytelling is at the foundation of our work. We believe that people who are impacted by the problem are necessarily close to the solution. My Dog Is My Home provides a platform for people with actual lived experience of homelessness and animal companionship to share in their own words how co-sheltering people and animals together contributes to ending homelessness. Through exhibitions, speaking events, and video or narrated images, we are able to educate members of the public, program administrators, and policymakers about preserving the human-animal bond in circumstances of homelessness.

COMMUNITY BUILDING
We believe in the mantra that we are “stronger together.” My Dog Is My Home holds space for members of the homeless services and animal welfare communities to come together to connect, learn from one another, and solve mutual problems. Most notably, our community building efforts have created two related but distinct stakeholder watering holes: 

1) Annual Co-Sheltering Conference
Since 2021, My Dog Is My Home’s annual conference has drawn 400-500 people together from across disciplines to hear from homeless shelter programs about co-
sheltering models in practice, latest research in homelessness and animal companionship, and relevant policy efforts across the US and globally.

2) Co-Sheltering Collaborative
The Co-Sheltering Collaborative is a peer-to-peer learning network with membership that
spans across animal welfare and homeless services. This Collaborative meets as a large group on a quarterly basis to exchange resources, troubleshoot, and hear presentations from members on the progress of their work. In between large group meetings, working groups meet to produce deliverables that work towards collectively developed goals. The Collaborative also provides a sustained community for attendees of the annual conference.

My Dog Is My Home also works with homeless shelters that need more hands-on assistance with developing or implementing co-sheltering. We provide customized training, consultation on policies, and resource coordination to ensure a successful co-sheltering program.

We started Take on College in 2019 because we noticed the lack of mentorship resources available for those who would become first-generation college students. The average college counselor can cost upwards of $100 per meeting - and as college students who can't afford that, we want to help.

 

Through Take on College, we provide an accessible program for students to learn from others who have just gone through the same process. APCF was founded in 1990 by API community leaders in response to the need for alternative funding for Los Angeles-based nonprofit organizations serving API communities. Prior to its incorporation, less than 0.3% of all local foundation funds went to API agencies, according to a 1988 study by AAPI Equality Alliance (formerly known as A3PCON - Asian Pacific Policy & Planning Council). In 1986, the United Way of Greater Los Angeles funded only five organizations serving APIs. To raise funds for community organizations serving API communities, APCF initiated employee giving campaigns at various workplaces, including private companies, federal agencies, state agencies, county agencies, city agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

In the past decade, APCF has diversified its fundraising efforts by developing other avenues for giving. With the growth of donor-advised funds, giving circles, grant making, scholarship funds, and capacity building initiatives, APCF has been able to cultivate philanthropy among APIs while providing multiple vehicles for donors to support the community.

As the only community-based fund serving API communities in Southern California since 1990, APCF is dedicated to increasing philanthropy amongst Asian Americans in order to build healthier communities, create a stronger unified voice, and develop leaders. Annually APCF and our 74 Network Agencies serve over 4.9 million people, over 82% of whom live at or below poverty income levels, in 47 API languages in addition to English and Spanish.

SPIO is building Pacific Islander presence in higher education and professional fields through free digital resources.

Pacific Islanders remain underrepresented in higher education, professional fields, and in the media today. Often limited in opportunities in their home communities, Pacific Islanders need resources and support to pursue higher education, secure professional positions, and access economic opportunities. Now, with the COVID-19 pandemic and its disproportionate effect on Pacific Islanders and other communities of color, these resources are more essential than ever to foster a thriving, inclusive Pacific Islander community rooted in cultural heritage. 

South Pacific Islander Organization (SPIO) is a 100% volunteer and youth-led nonprofit founded in December 2018 by four Stanford alumni who believe in democratizing Pacific Islander access to higher education and economic opportunities, globally. They came together in response to the lack of cohesive Pacific representation in higher education, professional fields, and in the media.

SPIO's current international Advisory Council and Board of Directors leverage a diversity of expertise across government, corporate, higher education, and nonprofit fields which fuel their inclusive, cross-collaborative, and metrics-driven strategic plan.

SPIO's strength lies in its inclusive vision, international network, community-building capacity, digital reach, and online following. Some of their highlights to date include establishing a 501(c)3 within 6 months of incorporation, reaching over 50,000+ organic international website views in 2 years, and launching 6 digital programs accessible worldwide.

For over 40 years, Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC) has provided a safety net of social welfare and community development services to empower people and communities in need. LTSC provides culturally and linguistically appropriate services to the Japanese American community in the Southland, builds multi-family affordable housing projects to uplift low-income neighborhoods of color throughout Los Angeles, and promotes equitable development and cultural preservation in the Little Tokyo neighborhood.

Magic Canoe’s mission is to build a bioregional movement across Salmon Nation through storytelling. From the North Slope of Alaska to the shores of California, our interconnected story initiatives work to accelerate the success of local, regenerative communities that exist in harmony with the lands and waters that sustain us.

At the heart of this movement are people at the edges—in places often far removed from centers of power: rural and Indigenous communities whose importance is typically undervalued. But edges are innovative and diverse, holding profound stocks of human and natural capital resources which can lead a bioregional shift towards regenerative practices. After all, it is in the edges where myriad innovations began— off-grid solar, permaculture, microcredit, mobile payments, the Internet, and health breakthroughs to name just a few. Shifting resources and attention to the edges is an essential step in addressing climate change and cascading systems failure.

Magic Canoe supports edge communities in sharing ideas of importance to them. We provide resources to discover stories for and by neighbors connected through purpose and place. Amplifying traditionally under-shared stories and storytellers from the
edge reshapes the dominant narrative in our bioregion towards a future of reciprocity, celebration and local solutions.

Our name and inspiration comes from Wa’xaid, Cecil Paul, a Haisla and Xenaksiala elder who—against enormous odds, and with many partners—forever protected the Kitlope from logging. During this quest, Wa’xaid imagined a “magic canoe,” a metaphysical vessel with room for everyone who wanted to join his journey. Wa’Xaid asked the founders of Magic Canoe, our organization, to keep this idea alive, even after he left on another great journey after his time on Earth.

The mission of Asian Women's Shelter (AWS) is to eliminate domestic violence by promoting the social, economic and political self-determination of women.  While we have the cultural and language capacity to address the specific needs of individuals from Pan-Asian backgrounds, we welcome all survivors.  We provide language accessibility, educational programs, community-based initiatives and advocacy.  All of our services and programs seek to address an interplay of factors affecting survivors, including sexism, racism, ageism, classism, ableism and heterosexism.  Because AWS recognizes the abuse of power as the root cause of violence, all of our work is rooted in an anti-oppression framework. We are a non-hierarchical, consensus-based organization and operate in a shared leadership model.  We continuously seek to collaborate with other organizations in order to build a network of services beyond AWS.  These efforts not only help us serve our clients, but create a stronger voice for our advocacy and policy work.

Spotlighting the Varied Experiences of Asian America Pacific Islander Women

AWU was founded in 1976 by a group of San Francisco Bay Area Asian American women as Asian Women United and received its non-profit organization status in 1981. The organization seeks to explore the many facets of Asian American women’s experiences and varied cultural heritages through publications and video productions. AWU videos have been broadcast on public television in the U.S. and Canada and screened at film festivals in the U.S. and Asia and have been viewed in college classrooms across the country. AWU publications are available in libraries and bookstores nationwide as well as in Canada and Asia. Both Making Waves: Writings By and About Asian American Women (Beacon Press 1989) and Making More Waves: New Writings By Asian American Women (1997) have been adopted in Asian American and Women’s Studies classes from New York to California.

The Filipino-American Association of Vancouver, Washington (FAAV) is a nonprofit cultural organization based in Vancouver, Washington, USA, a city adjacent to Portland, Oregon. Formerly known as Filipino-American Association of Clark County and Vicinity (FAACCV), the organization was founded in the early 1980s when the few Filipino-Americans in the Vancouver, Washington area got together and decided that, to preserve the ‘old country’ culture and camaraderie, was a worth-while effort. Over the years, this grew into an organization that established an active folk dance troupe for youth and adults, sponsored a youth basketball team, sponsored visiting chorale groups such as the University of the Philippines Concert Chorus, the De La Salle University Chorale, Kontra Gapi Ensemble and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Singers. It also put together forums of interest to Filipino-Americans, such as immigration issues, etc.


It has served as a ‘welcome wagon’ for new Filipino-Americans in the area, providing assistance if needed, and a comfortable atmosphere of friendship. It has also actively pursued partnerships with other Filipino-American associations in the Oregon and Southwest Washington area, spearheading or supporting various projects that benefit the community. And, of course, it has established the annual Philippine Independence Day Picnic and a formal Christmas Dinner/Dance called Pasko Na Naman for the Filipino-Americans to get together and celebrate.
