Somalia’s Water Crisis Can’t Wait
This Ramadan, Give Water That Lasts! In rural Somali towns and villages, water access depends on erratic rainfall and distant sources. With little government infrastructure, private vendors control supply—charging families $3–$9 for a single 200-liter barrel, often during droughts and often of unsafe quality. Families are forced into impossible choices: Water or food? Water or healthcare? Water or education? Aid Alone Isn’t Enough Well-intentioned aid agencies have drilled boreholes for years. But without: Ongoing technical support Financial planning Long-term governance These systems break down. Communities are left stranded—once again dependent on expensive vendors. The cycle repeats: failure, price gouging, displacement, and public health crises. "The best of deeds is to provide water to the thirsty." (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 40, Hadith 547). A Sustainable Water Enterprise—Built to Last A new model introduced in 2023 by Adeso demonstrates how sustainable, community-centered water services can be delivered in Somalia. This model provides: Consistent water supply, even in dry seasons Clean and safe water for daily use No more long walks — water at your doorstep Affordable, solar-powered systems built to last This isn’t an emergency relief. Its infrastructure, local ownership, and dignity. (Quran 2:262). WHY YOUR RAMADAN DONATION MATTERS Water Is Sadaqah Jariyah Your gift does not end when Ramadan ends Every sip carries reward Every system sustains generations Every Ramadan gift multiplies in impact Your donation could help a family...like Fowsiya who featured in our BBC Red Nose Day film. Watch here In Fowsiya’s home, water used to be the first worry of the day and the last worry at night. Some mornings she would measure out what was left and think through everything it had to cover—drinking, cooking, washing, and getting her children ready for school. When water was expensive or unreliable, every other need competed with it. “You start asking yourself questions no mother should have to ask,” she says. “Do I buy enough water today, or do I save that money for school?” She remembers how stress followed her children into the classroom too—late mornings, missed lessons, and the constant distraction of not having what they needed. Now, with clean water piped to her home and her children’s school, life has changed. SCALING THE IMPACT: From One Town to Seven—and Beyond By 2030, We aim to expand to 7 towns across Somalia 📈 Projected impact: Over 400,000 people served A fully self-sustaining model Change the System This Ramadan We are challenging the status quo, rejecting both profit-driven exclusion and aid-dependent fragility. Your donation acts as a catalytic investment in a model that can scale and endure. Your generosity helps build a future where clean water is affordable, reliable, and community owned.
