Our Vision

We envision a world where ALK+ lung cancer is a chronic or even curable condition and the next person diagnosed with lung cancer does not have to live under the current stigma.

Our Start

#SweatForBreath started as a grassroots fundraising campaign during Lung Cancer Awareness Month in 2023. After being diagnosed with Stage IV ALK+ lung cancer in November 2022, David Cornbrooks became keenly aware that he was benefiting from the selfless fundraising and awareness efforts of the patients before him.

Listen to David's story here.

The #SweatForBreath campaign in 2023 became David, and his wife, Lisa’s, way to help the next generation ALK+ lung cancer patients.

#SweatForBreath accelerated beyond more than just a typical fundraiser. The initiative quickly evolved into a community of patients, caregivers, family, and friends seeking to make David and Lisa's vision a reality and the road to that vision more tolerable. People donated, sweat at the in-person cycle event, posted on social media, and helped fundraise through organizing group walks, selling art, "gifting" donations on behalf of clients, and much more.

Their success in 2023 compelled David and Lisa to officially transition the #SweatForBreath campaign into the Sweat For Breath Foundation, operating through a fiscal sponsorship with Players Philanthropy Fund, a Maryland charitable trust recognized by IRS as a tax-exempt public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (Federal Tax ID: 27-6601178).

Our Impact

Since 2023, over 1,450 donors have given nearly $400,000 to the Foundation (or its predecessor campaign). 100% of the proceeds have gone directly to The Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Center in Baltimore, MD to support Dr. Vincent Lam’s ALK+ lung cancer research.

This support provided the critical funding needed to launch Dr. Lam’s clinic trial, which will evaluate the safety of a cancer peptide vaccine to prevent or delay acquired resistance in advanced ALK+ lung cancer patients currently on ALK targeted therapy. Dr. Lam’s vaccine is the first ALK+ vaccine in the world to be tested in a clinical trial. Dr. Lam administered the vaccine to the first patient in clinic on May 13, 2024!

The Sweat for Breath Foundation is a project of Players Philanthropy Fund, Inc. a Texas nonprofit corporation recognized by IRS as a tax-exempt public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (Federal Tax ID: 27-6601178,ppf.org/pp). Contributions to The Sweat for Breath Foundation qualify as tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Joshua's Journey 2025

Joshua and 5 of his closest friends and family will be running 200 miles from Shelbyville, TN back to his hometown in Knoxville in order to raise money for Sweat for Breath and research studies for ALK+ lung cancer. Joshua was diagnosed with ALK stage 4 lung cancer in 2022, and has since been staying active in order to keep his body in the best possible shape while battling this disease. To quote him, "I beat cancer every day by running." Donate today to support Joshua's Journey, as well as future research and vaccine trials for ALK lung cancer.

Help Support the Fight Against ALK+ Lung Cancer

Please join me in the fight against ALK+ lung cancer! My friend, David Cornbrooks, was diagnosed at age 38 despite never having smoked a cigarette in his life. For several years, David has courageously lived with this disease alongside his wife Lisa and their two young children. To support him and others with ALK+ lung cancer through the #SweatForBreath campaign, I'm undertaking the 29029 Trail challenge . This event pushes participants to their limits by challenging athletes to run back-to-back-to-back mountain marathons over three consecutive days – a total of 78 miles of challenging terrain. While this challenge is significant, I hope to attack it with the same courage that my friend David has shown in attacking cancer. With your donation, we can fuel even more progress that offers hope and adds precious years to the lives of ALK+ patients. Every contribution, big or small, directly supports cutting-edge research –because more research truly means more life. Please donate today and help us make a difference for David and others facing this diagnosis. Learn more about David, the Sweat for Breath Foundation and ALK+ here .
