Transforming Plastic Waste into Opportunity in Uganda

Takataka Plastics (legally incorporated as Takataka Initiative Limited) is a social enterprise operating in Gulu since 2020. Uganda generates over 600 tonnes of plastic waste daily, but only 6% is collected. The majority is burned, releasing toxic fumes that threaten public health and damage ecosystems. We fight environmental pollution and poverty by creating a local circular economy that cleans the environment while keeping the value of the waste within Uganda.

What We Do: Local Recycling & Eco-Friendly Innovation

We collect, process, and recycle plastic waste into high-quality, sustainable products, including construction tiles, educational learning aids, coasters, phone stands, and more. With local technology, we became the first organization in Uganda to recycle PET into a finished product at scale.

Community Empowerment & Job Creation

Recycling is only half our mission; our workplace is built on community empowerment and healing.

• Opportunities for Vulnerable Youth: Over half of our full-time staff are vulnerable youth, including formerly unhoused youth and single mothers.
• Holistic Support Services: We employ a full-time counselor to provide trauma counseling, life skills training, and financial literacy education to our team and their families.
• Community Education: We conduct educational workshops and radio programs to teach communities about the dangers of burning waste and the value of recycling.

We are currently scaling operations with the construction of the Takataka Village Complex to expand our recycling capacity.
