Workshop Learning is a nonprofit educational organization, founded in 2010 in Philadelphia to serve under-resourced youth

Through real-world learning, robust community, and personal growth, Workshop Learning empowers young adults to pursue a life of security, connection, and purpose. 

We design learning experiences in which students hone their sense of self, shape a vision for what comes next, and build the skills they need to make that vision a reality. Our focus areas include animal advocacy, health and development policy, mental health and happiness, and family planning.

CE supports its incubated charities through a fiscal sponsorship with Players Philanthropy Fund (Federal Tax ID: 27-6601178), a Maryland charitable trust with federal tax-exempt status as a public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Uplift Project provides financial support to small business owners in rural Guyana.

The Uplift Project believes strong communities start with thriving small businesses. In rural Guyana, where most of the population living in poverty resides, small businesses hold the key to sustainable economic growth. Despite Guyana’s booming oil economy, many rural communities remain isolated, disconnected from broader opportunities. However, these small communities have untapped potential to meet the growing demand for domestically produced goods.

Through microfinancing, The Uplift Project empowers small business owners with direct financial support. This approach enables entrepreneurs to grow their businesses, showing a 33% increase in profits and a 61% growth in asset ownership. By bridging the gap between rural communities and the national economy, we foster meaningful change.

Our process begins by connecting with communities to assess their needs and potential impact. We provide hands-on support to help business owners navigate the application process, review and approve promising applicants, and continuously evaluate progress. Responsible businesses are incentivized with future funding opportunities.

Inspired by the resilience of rural entrepreneurs, our founder created The Uplift Project to empower small businesses and strengthen communities. Today, we continue to unlock opportunities and help rural businesses thrive in Guyana’s growing economy.

**Anabel’s Grocery is a student-run nonprofit grocery store that strives to provide nutritious, affordable food to all Cornell students.** Our store is located on Cornell’s campus, eliminating the need for transportation to distant grocers and greatly reducing the time required to shop. Our subsidy fund enables us to partner primarily with local farmers and bakers to sell fresh produce, whole grains, dairy, legumes, nuts, herbs and spices at a low cost, saving our shoppers an average of 20% on their grocery bill. We are also the only venue on campus accepting SNAP-EBT.

Anabel’s is not solely a grocery store—**it is also a learning lab in social entrepreneurship and nutrition education**. We strive to improve food literacy through easy-to-make meal kits, cooking classes, community dinners, and farm tours. We also collaborate with like-minded student organizations to tackle the systemic forces that give rise to food insecurity and racial inequity within our campus food system. Our Anti-racism Action Fund, established from the sale of produce donated to us by Dilmun Hill Student Farm and the Cornell Hydroponics Club, enables us to provide microgrants to campus and community organizations that are working toward a more equitable future. 

However, **Anabel’s relies on financial support** from generous donors like you to continue providing fresh, nutritious, and low-cost groceries for students, ensuring our local partners are fairly compensated, and funding educational programs centered on sustainable food systems. SINA (Social Innovation Academy)is a multi-award-winning model empowering marginalized youth and African refugee communities to unleash their potentials and become social entrepreneurs. By creating their own solutions to the challenges they face, participants transform from passive aid recipients to active drivers of their own futures. As SINA's model continues to scale across different African countries through a replication approach, its impact continues to grow. Regarding Her

myAgro is an award-winning, nonprofit social enterprise helping smallholder farmers in West Africa move out of poverty.

In West Africa, there are more than 60 million smallholder farmers – many of whom live on less than $2 per day. These farmers face a number of challenges that keep them in a cycle of poverty. First, they lack access to secure places to save money. This means at planting time, they are unable to purchase high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and other farm inputs. Because many smallholders in West Africa are dependent on one rainy season per year, their yields and income are vulnerable to climate change as rains become less predictable and temperatures rise. Lastly, many smallholders lack access to the information and training they need to improve soil fertility and increase their yields.

Since 2012, myAgro has provided farmers with a savings tool, high-quality inputs, and the training and support they need to increase farm productivity. myAgro farmers are equipped to improve their yields and income, ensuring their family’s food security and livelihood. The myAgro model includes:

- Mobile Layaway Technology: Farmers save money little by little to purchase myAgro packages. They make payments using mobile money or scratch cards (similar to buying mobile phone credit).
- High-Quality Farm Inputs: Farmers select from rainy and off-season packages of high-quality seeds and fertilizer, tree seedlings, or poultry – which are delivered within or very near villages.
- Climate-Smart Agricultural Training: Farmers receive in-person agriculture training on microdosing fertilizer, organic composting, intercropping, and more – leading to increased soil fertility and higher yields. 
- Year-Round Call Center Support: myAgro Call Centers provide farmers with real-time mobile support to answer questions, including calls made to every farmer to support them during planting season.

The myAgro model creates a powerful impact. Over the last five years on average, myAgro farmers across Mali and Senegal have grown 130% more food and earned $156 more annually than control farmers. For a farmer making $2/day, this represents a 21% increase in annual income.

Because farmers are able to reinvest this income in their farms for the next season, myAgro’s market-based approach to improved food security creates an impact that is sustainable. And because our model is built on mobile technology, it is scalable and replicable.

Importantly, myAgro provides a pathway for women farmers to overcome gender barriers and increase household income. We design our model, packages, and training with women’s needs at the center. In 2024, 70% of all farmers served were women.

The Fondazione Marea-Ente Filantropico ETS was established on December 18, 2024 (video summary) thanks to a six-month Capital Campaign that saw the extraordinary participation of 423 Pioneers (individual donors), the involvement of 3 Sicilian Community Foundations,  €423,000 raised, and the creation of an initial Foundation endowment of €150,000. 

FONDAZIONE MAREA’S IMPACT 

The Foundation aims to turn the tide on Sicily's depopulation phenomenon by significantly reducing the number of people leaving the island in the long term, stopping the talent drain by retaining and attracting young Sicilian graduates and talent, creating more job opportunities in Sicily by reducing NEET status, and developing the philanthropic sector in Southern Italy by closing the gap in the investment by foundations compared to Northern and Central Italy.

UNDERLYING PROBLEMS

Fondazione Marea addresses two main problems:

1. Sicily is endangered. The lack of job opportunities is causing the depopulation of Sicily, forcing young people with high potential to emigrate and condemning many others to NEET status.

According to SVIMEZ - Association for the Development of Industry in Southern Italy data, every year 50,000 people leave Sicily, and the percentage of talented young graduates leaving Sicily in search of opportunities has increased fivefold over time, from 6 percent in 2001 to 32 percent in 2021. In 2080, it is estimated that Sicily will have only 2.8 million residents. Moreover, the Migrantes Foundation 2024 report reveals Sicily to be the Italian region with the highest rate of expatriates, more than 826,000 people. These numbers tell of a veritable diaspora. What is happening profoundly changes the demographic, social, cultural and economic structure of the territory, impoverishing the community and effectively desertifying the Mezzogiorno.

2. The lack of investment by foundations. Foundations play an important role in modern societies: they are private nonprofit institutions that act in the public interest. Because of their history and wealth, they are capable of making a significant impact and can contribute to the growth and development of communities.

Southern Italy has historically suffered from a persistent shortage of foundations, due to the limited circulation of capital and the lack of a philanthropic culture in the area. Meanwhile, Northern and Central Italy benefit in many ways from the presence in their regions of foundations that invest in local businesses and nonprofits, acting as intermediaries between the public and private sectors.

STRATEGY

Fondazione Marea's strategy is based on transforming the diaspora from a threat into an opportunity. It is an innovative model that gathers economic resources and volunteer expertise from the Sicilian community scattered around the world and channels them in a concrete way to support projects with a potential for high social impact. Following the principles of Venture Philanthropy, the Foundation identifies ideas and projects of new social enterprises, Third Sector entities established in corporate form, which play a crucial role in solving social and environmental problems, to respond to the emerging needs of local communities and promote collective welfare. This is currently still a pioneering corporate structure for our local context, with only 63 social enterprises registered in corporate form in the Third Sector across Sicily as of April 11, 2025, compared to 3,334 social cooperatives.

After a regional open call, Marea accompanies each project with incubation and acceleration programs and access to strategic resources. It is Sicilians themselves –  those who have emigrated, returned, stayed, are native or adopted – who supply both a startup fund and the “talent bank,” becoming mentors to the new social entrepreneurs. These new social enterprises generate lasting value in the local area, creating jobs and improving the quality of life. With careful monitoring of results and indicators for measuring social impact, the Foundation collaborates with other Third Sector entities, companies and institutions to complement this commitment by Sicilians and for Sicilians.

THE STARTUP SUPPORT PROGRAM 

Fondazione Marea's startup support program is a structured approach to nurture the birth and growth of social enterprises in Sicily. It is composed of pre-incubation and incubation paths, aimed at both embryonic projects and businesses that have already been established for less than a year. The program offers tailored training, mentoring, access to strategic resources and a dedicated mentor to guide participants through the various stages of development. The goal is to create a social innovation ecosystem, engaging Pioneers (the Foundation's donors), experts, entrepreneurs, networks and investors to generate lasting and systemic impact in Sicily. The program also includes an accelerator track for more mature social enterprises, with the goal of supporting the scalability and replicability of these projects.

The first edition of the startup support program will be launched in May 2025 and will have two simultaneous tracks: one incubation and one acceleration.

The program will be aimed at social enterprises or ETS already established (but not more than 1 year old) or individuals/groups of people who have concrete proposals for social enterprises with implications for the Sicilian context and legal and operational headquarters (including future) in Sicily. Projects can deal with areas that respond to issues and challenges of the Sicilian region such as environment (water risk, drought and fire, agriculture), social (inclusion, immigration), or underutilized tangible and intangible resources.

After a promotional roadshow across Sicily to connect with people potentially interested in participating, at least nine projects (one for each province in Sicily) will be selected to participate. 

The incubation track will last three months in a hybrid mode (online and in-person) with dedicated coaches and access to vertical mentoring sessions. There will be 3 in-person sessions of 3 days each  with theoretical lectures, workshops, hands-on labs, masterclasses, 1-to-1 planning moments, and testimonials.

After the final event to present the social enterprise ideas to the entire Marea Pioneers’ community, projects that meet the requirements for potential growth will be eligible for funding opportunities from the Foundation.

Concurrent with the incubation track will be an acceleration program: A number of social enterprises established for at least 1 year will be selected during an open call based on their track record, impact generated, and potential for scalability and replicability. Over three months, the enterprises will participate in an accelerator with customized training, coaching and mentoring tailored to their needs and those of the market.

Unlike other startup programs, after the formal incubation or acceleration journey, each project will receive long-term assistance through 3 years of mentorship to support the development at the most critical time of a new venture.

**Livelihoods & Skill Development:** Through programs like Udaan, Business Gym, and RWeaves, Saath helps youth, women, and artisans build sustainable incomes. We train youth in market-relevant skills, support women entrepreneurs to grow small businesses, and connect traditional artisans to modern markets. Many of our trainees have gone on to start small enterprises, secure stable jobs, or return to education. 

**Urban Development & Housing:** We believe every family deserves a safe home and a healthy neighbourhood. Saath works in slum communities to improve housing, sanitation, and access to basic services like clean water, waste management, and electricity. Our Urban Resource Centres act as community hubs where people can get information, government linkages, and guidance for better living conditions. 

**Health:** We organise health camps, awareness drives, and nutrition programs to promote overall well-being, especially for women and children. 

**Financial Inclusion & Women Empowerment:** Saath believes financial independence is the first step toward empowerment. Our Saath Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies help women save, access small loans, and manage their finances confidently. The **African Diaspora Innovation Fund (AfDIF)** is a bold initiative by the **African Diaspora Network (ADN)** in partnership with **Myriad USA**. AfDIF bridges the gap between remittances and long-term investment, transforming diaspora generosity into **scalable, sustainable impact** across Africa and its global diaspora.

Where is SFI needed? Underserved Communities

Rory Sparrow recognizes that underserved communities, both in the United States and around the world, face significant barriers to adopting renewable energy. It's a matter of cost and infrastructure, with limited resources and logistics preventing the widespread adoption of clean technology.

In these underserved communities, basic necessities like clean water, heating, refrigeration, reliable energy, and sustainable agriculture are often lacking. The absence of these fundamental resources results in a heavy reliance on low-cost solutions that produce high levels of carbon emissions.

The Sparrow Foundation Institute is structured to operate self-sufficiently within these local underserved communities globally. This approach prevents SFI from competing for resources with other organizations and provides a scalable business model that can be easily expanded and managed through a network of motivated new businesses.

SFI's operational costs are covered by local distribution efforts, enabled by the adoption of SFI products and services. These products offer simple installation by community members, compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, the creation of local jobs and educational opportunities, and long-term sustainable community energy plans.

Baltimore Green Justice Workers Cooperative equips people from marginalized, under-served neighborhoods with innovative, out-of-the box green solutions that help them shift power dynamics and create more beautiful, energy-efficient, safe spaces in their communities.

Vision Statement:

We envision a world where people of color from marginalized and under-served communities are no longer disproportionately impacted by environmental, social and/or economic injustices but are empowered through education, training, professional development, advocacy and outreach to design, develop, establish, implement and sustain high-quality green jobs programs, projects, coops, businesses, organizations and initiatives that equip them and other stakeholders with the power, confidence, skills, resources and influence to make every community across the globe a better place to live work play, pray and learn.

Founded in December 2022, BGJWC is a nonprofit start-up.  2023 was a year of planning and implementation of community-building events to grow BGJWC's capacity and stakeholder network. In 2023, BGJWC obtain its IRS tax-exemption too.   In addition to hosting several web-based community dialogues and podcasts on environmental justice, green coops and green careers, BGJWC worked diligently with community partners to plan the launch of its Offshore Wind Workforce Development Training pilot as part of its Baltimore Green Jobs Academy.  BGJWC has also been working in two neighborhoods in Baltimore to build dialogue around climate change and solar power battery storage issues.  In 2024, BGJWC is set to launch the Offshore Wind Worker Safety Training Pilot via its Baltimore Green Jobs Academy.

Jagriti Yatra is a movement for creating a national ecosystem for entrepreneurs in Tier 2 and 3 districts of India. It is an entrepreneurship journey that takes hundreds of India's highly motivated youth on a 15-day, 8000 km national odyssey to learn from the role models - social and business entrepreneurs - of the country. Started in 2008, the Yatra has impacted 7000+ youth; 28% of them turning into entrepreneurs. The Yatra has been replicated in 5 other countries.

2) Jagriti Enterprise Centre – Purvanchal (JEC-P) http://jecp.in/:

JECP is building an enterprise incubation and innovation ecosystem in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Our aim is to motivate local youth to build enterprises. Designed with a 3-I (Incubation, Innovation and

Inspiration) framework, the Centre will incubate enterprises, promote sustainable innovation in six focus areas – Health, Women, Digital, Rural Urbanization, Agro Processing, Handicraft and Apparel

– and inspire local people through culture, architecture and local role models. Over the past 3 years, it has incubated 100 enterprises, creating 2000 jobs and impacting 30,000+ beneficiaries. It

also implemented a digital literacy training program, called Internet Saathi supported by Tata Trusts and Google, for 1.7 million rural women across 10000+ villages in 7 districts

Maarifa, a Swahili word for Knowledge, works to defeat poverty and grow local prosperity by promoting locally made products and supporting small scale industry entrepreneurs and artisans in DR Congo. We support them to grow and sustain their small and micro businesses through training in financial management, marketing, packaging, market expansion strategies and give them access to capital.

Our activities include but not limited to:

1.    Personal and business Financial Literacy training.

2.    Formation of support or accountability groups of young entrepreneurs.

3.    Connect entrepreneurs in support groups to Microfinance Institutions for small business loans.

4.    Organize Business Expos to promote locally made products.

- Financial Literacy: through partnerships and new programs, we acknowledge the full life cycle of financial literacy training and education needed to reduce wealth inequality. From early childhood education efforts to adult financial wellness programs, our goal is to ensure financial literacy becomes a fundamental right for all. 
- Financial Career Paths: we partner with various diverse intern and career path programs to generate a more inclusive workforce. Since entry level roles in financial services tend to start at higher income levels, we are investing time into programs and partnerships that train more underrepresented communities for a career in financial services, while creating mentoring programs for mid to late-stage leaders to take on roles as asset owners, chief of investment officers, trustees, board of directors, as an example.  
- Resource Sharing: we provide free thought leadership programming and research  to amplify data to leaders and institutions to make informed decisions on the state of underrepresented communities while tracking progress for a more inclusive ecosystem.

The problem: In Kenya, women are significantly disadvantaged both socially and economically. 

About Buildher The problem: In Kenya, women are significantly disadvantaged both socially and economically. Over half the female population lives below the poverty line ($3.10/day), less than 50% of girls are educated beyond primary school level, and young women in urban areas are more likely to be unemployed than any other group. Meanwhile, Kenya has an alarming lack of skilled designers and construction professionals and booming demand for urban development, particularly housing. This high-potential sector is currently male-dominated, with women representing less than 3% of those it employs. By the end of this century, 40% of the global population will reside in Africa. By 2030, more than half of Africa's population will reside in cities. We are working to ensure that women actively contribute to and benefit from this urban development. Our solution: Buildher recognizes an opportunity in this problem. We designed and deliver an innovative technical training and employment program exclusively for low income earning women that produces semi-skilled artisans and places them with construction industry employers. Our model is designed by women, for women: It enables participants to earn as they learn, significantly increase their earnings, and secure a professional certification that creates opportunities for career growth. Our goal: Buildher will train and empower thousands of Kenyan women through construction. In the process, we will develop a replicable model for gender integration in our industry to deeply impact hundreds of thousands of women across the continent. Buildher equips disadvantaged women in Kenya with accredited construction skills leading to greater financial prosperity, changing male attitudes and promoting gender equality within the construction industry.
