Baltimore Green Justice Workers Cooperative equips people from marginalized, under-served neighborhoods with innovative, out-of-the box green solutions that help them shift power dynamics and create more beautiful, energy-efficient, safe spaces in their communities.

We envision a world where people of color from marginalized and under-served communities are no longer disproportionately impacted by environmental, social and/or economic injustices but are empowered through education, training, professional development, advocacy and outreach to design, develop, establish, implement and sustain high-quality green jobs programs, projects, coops, businesses, organizations and initiatives that equip them and other stakeholders with the power, confidence, skills, resources and influence to make every community across the globe a better place to live work play, pray and learn.

A Year in Review:

Founded in December 2022, BGJWC is coming up on its one year anniversary as a nonprofit startup.  This year has been a year of planning and implementation of community-building events to grow BGJWC's capacity and stakeholder network.  In addition to hosting several web-based community dialogues and podcasts on environmental justice, green coops and green careers, BGJWC has been working diligently with community partners to plan the launch of its Offshore Wind Workforce Development Training pilot as part of its Baltimore Green Jobs Academy.  BGJWC has also been working in two neighborhoods in Baltimore to build dialogue around climate change and solar power battery storage issues. 

As BGJWC's prepares to host the 2023 Kwanzaa Community Talks Series, it is launching a virtual fundraiser starting November 28, 2023 (Giving Tuesday) and ending December 31, 2023 (New Year's Eve) to raise funds to cover administrative and operational costs not funded by current grant and contract awards.

Where is SFI needed? Underserved Communities

Rory Sparrow recognizes that underserved communities, both in the United States and around the world, face significant barriers to adopting renewable energy. It's a matter of cost and infrastructure, with limited resources and logistics preventing the widespread adoption of clean technology.

In these underserved communities, basic necessities like clean water, heating, refrigeration, reliable energy, and sustainable agriculture are often lacking. The absence of these fundamental resources results in a heavy reliance on low-cost solutions that produce high levels of carbon emissions.

The Sparrow Foundation Institute is structured to operate self-sufficiently within these local underserved communities globally. Supporting women in Burundi to become active and contributing members of their communities.

Faith in Action is a community based organization, founded in 2003 by a team of 5 people in order to support women and children in extreme poverty caused by the crisis and cultural barriers in Burundi. In fact Burundi population is predominantly female (54.2%) and 74.1% of the population lives below the poverty line.  Faith in Action coaches and supports disadvantaged and at risk women in Burundi through our holistic faith, family and community centred approach so that they become active, contributing members of their communities. ▪ Utilize Self Help Groups (SHG) made up of 15-20 people (90%are women) ▪ We support the members of SHG in four main areas: ○ Entrepreneurship: business plan development, individual coaching, creation of points of sell, harvest storage and connect them to market for the flow of their product. ○ Solidarity Funding: avail guarantee fund for Finance Institution connection and offer finance management training ○ Family support: birth and mariage registration facilitation, child development and protection, professional skills training and support ○ Life Skills: SRH, leadership skills and group therapy

About Buildher The problem: In Kenya, women are significantly disadvantaged both socially and economically. Over half the female population lives below the poverty line ($3.10/day), less than 50% of girls are educated beyond primary school level, and young women in urban areas are more likely to be unemployed than any other group. Meanwhile, Kenya has an alarming lack of skilled designers and construction professionals and booming demand for urban development, particularly housing. This high-potential sector is currently male-dominated, with women representing less than 3% of those it employs. By the end of this century, 40% of the global population will reside in Africa. By 2030, more than half of Africa's population will reside in cities. We are working to ensure that women actively contribute to and benefit from this urban development. Our solution: Buildher recognizes an opportunity in this problem. We designed and deliver an innovative technical training and employment program exclusively for low income earning women that produces semi-skilled artisans and places them with construction industry employers. Our model is designed by women, for women: It enables participants to earn as they learn, significantly increase their earnings, and secure a professional certification that creates opportunities for career growth. Our goal: Buildher will train and empower thousands of Kenyan women through construction. In the process, we will develop a replicable model for gender integration in our industry to deeply impact hundreds of thousands of women across the continent. "Empowering Youth Through Art and Welding: Lusaka Ryan's Journey with Give a Hand Uganda and YTB Support"

Once upon a time in the vibrant heart of Uganda, a young visionary named Lusaka Ryan dreamt of empowering the youth in his community through the transformative power of art and welding. He believed that by providing them with these valuable skills, he could open doors to a brighter future for many. With his dream in mind, Lusaka set out on a remarkable journey of hope and determination.

Lusaka's journey began when he discovered Give a Hand Uganda, a charitable organization dedicated to uplifting the lives of young people in disadvantaged communities. Impressed by their commitment to change, Lusaka decided to partner with them to turn his dream into a reality.

With the support of Give a Hand Uganda and the generous contributions from the Youth Training and Development Board (YTB), Lusaka established a program that would become the beacon of hope for the youth in his community. The program aimed to teach young individuals the art of sculpture and welding, providing them with practical skills that could not only express their creativity but also offer them sustainable livelihoods.

The program's impact was immediate and profound. Lusaka and his team began offering workshops, where the youth learned the delicate art of sculpting, shaping raw materials into beautiful works of art that told their unique stories. Simultaneously, they were trained in the intricate craft of welding, turning ordinary pieces of metal into functional and artistic creations.

As the program flourished, stories of transformation emerged. Young people who had once faced bleak futures found themselves equipped with skills that opened up new opportunities. They created sculptures that spoke of their dreams and welded structures that represented their resilience. With pride, they started selling their creations in local markets, gaining financial independence.

Lusaka's journey didn't stop at just teaching skills; he also provided mentorship and guidance, nurturing the talents and aspirations of the youth under his care. The impact of his work extended far beyond art and welding; it instilled in them a sense of purpose and self-belief.

The partnership between Lusaka Ryan, Give a Hand Uganda, and YTB proved to be a true catalyst for change. It demonstrated the incredible potential of youth when given the right tools and support. The success stories of these young artists and welders not only brightened their own lives but also brought hope to the entire community.

In the end, Lusaka Ryan's dream became a testament to the power of collaboration, dedication, and the belief that every young person deserves a chance to shine. Through art and welding, they found their voices, and through Give a Hand Uganda and YTB's support, they discovered that they could shape their own destinies.

Today, Lusaka's journey continues, as he and his team work tirelessly to expand their program, reaching more young hearts and minds, and painting a brighter future for Uganda's youth, one sculpture and weld at a time.

Armenia emergency appeal to help people fleeing Nagorno-Karabakh.

Tens of thousands of people have fled to Armenia following the resumption of fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh on Tuesday, 19 September, and the subsequent surrender of the local authorities. From the very outset of these developments, our dedicated team has been on the ground, delivering crucial humanitarian assistance. The protracted conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh has inflicted unrelenting suffering on the local population since its eruption in 1988.

"The situation is critical, with over 105 000 people in need of assistance.  There are older people and families with small children. Many have taken only the basic things with them and lack adequate clothes, food, or hygiene items. We are relying on funds from our donors to respond to the civilian population's current needs," says Varduhi Dadunts, People in Need's Country Director in Armenia. 

"We will provide people with water, food, shopping vouchers, mattresses and blankets or clothes. We will help equip accommodation centers, support children and older people, and provide other basic humanitarian assistance. We are asking the public to contribute to our Armenia emergency appeal," says Šimon Pánek, CEO of People in Need. 

"In Armenia, we have been helping people affected by the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict for a long time. We have been supporting people affected by the conflict and subsequent developments, including the situation around the Lachin Corridor and current events," says Petr Drbohlav, People in Need's Regional Director for the Eastern Partnership and the Balkans.

People in Need is the largest non-governmental organization in Central and Eastern Europe, delivering development and humanitarian assistance to 25 countries across Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, MENA, and Asia. In 2022 alone, People in Need supported over 4,5 million people.   

People in Need has been working in Armenia since 2003 and is therefore well placed to provide timely and the most relevant assistance.  

*Armenia emergency appeal to help people fleeing Nagorno-Karabakh

The recent escalation of conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, preceded by the 9+ month blockade of the Lachin corridor has triggered the mass evacuation of Nagorno-Karabakh population, with at least 100,520 persons (over 80% of the region’s population) fleeing to Armenia between September 24 – 29. 2023. Already highly vulnerable after a prolonged blockade that has severe impact on their ability to access basic services (including basic food or medicine), the exiled people of Nagorno-Karabakh were   able to take with them little to no belonging.

The current situation is drastically different from before. Unlike previous displacements, this time they have no hope of ever returning to Nagorno-Karabakh. It means their needs include urgent, life-saving assistance such as emergency shelter, food, psychosocial support, health or protection, as well as mid to long-term integration support such as developing sources of income, education, etc. 

* Why your support matters?

• As of October 4, 2023, at least 100,520 persons have fled from the region towards Armenia, largely entering the country through the Lachin corridor and ending mainly in Goris/Syunik. 
• The coordination of the response is led by the Armenian government and supported by the UNHCR. Humanitarian actors are expected to coordinate their aid activities with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, and are then being referred to municipalities for further coordination.
• The current response relies on limited humanitarian resources and it can be expected that needs will rapidly become unmet as these are exhausted.
• PIN was among the first to respond with immediate food and emergency assistance in Goris. We were also amongst the first to support the official registration center run by authorities. 

In the coming months, PIN is planning to scale up its work and provide immediate assistance with:  
(a) Shelter and non-food items; 
(b) Food security and livelihoods;
(c) Education and child protection;
(d) Mainstreaming protection.

The SPARK Apprenticeship helps prepare students for the biotech workforce.  The CATALYST Internship educates students to become entrepreneurs by guiding them to develop solutions to real-world problems.

Kyusa provides comprehensive support to entrepreneurs and businesses through three interlocking programs:

Our programs are centered around three core offerings: Financing, Training & Coaching, and Business Consulting & Research.

Our financing programs are designed to help in-crisis micro and small businesses owned by youth entrepreneurs in low-income communities. We provide access to funding and resources to help these businesses increase their production capacity and achieve sustainable growth.

Our training & coaching program is tailored to the needs of each cohort, with sessions running for 6 to 12 weeks. Cohorts are divided into business and social entrepreneurs, with a hybrid format that includes in-person and virtual sessions. We have also launched an online platform offering self-paced courses to a wider audience.

Business consulting is aimed at growing and medium-sized enterprises, providing personalized business training and coaching in exchange for full consulting fees. This is a part of our earned revenue model, designed to ensure that our services are accessible and impactful.

Program outcomes:
Kyusa's impact has been far-reaching and transformative for the youth and women-led businesses we serve. Over the years, we have provided crucial capacity-building support to over 5,000 young entrepreneurs, who now run a collective 1,800 micro and small enterprises (MSEs), providing vital livelihoods for 3,600 individuals.

Our efforts to foster social entrepreneurship have also yielded remarkable results, with 95 social enterprises established to tackle pressing challenges and serving over 2,500 secondary beneficiaries.

Kyusa's innovative programs and initiatives have created opportunities for growth and expansion. Our business study trips, for instance, have provided exposure and networks that have enabled alumni to engage in cross-border trading, while our micro-grant program has supported 125 vendor businesses to recover from the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We accomplish this through offering innovative, quality education for over 1500 students in six partner schools and our flagship school, the Children’s Academy and Learning Center. The Children’s Academy is an integrated school, continuing education center, and incubator for entrepreneurship programming. It works hand-in-glove with our partner schools to provide a high quality, student-centered, values-based education, and seeks to serve as a model of education-centered community development for Haiti and the world. In order for Haiti to address its many challenges, its children (and committed parents) need to experience an innovative, quality education – an education that empowers them to develop their potential, to think outside the box and to engage in improving their communities to bring lasting change. We work with the farmer cooperative we helped form in 2020, the Thomacheat Prasat Banan Agriculture Cooperative. Together, we are building community-owned and operated enterprises. In 2023-25, we will focus on creating locally sourced and made agricultural products, such as compost and natural fertilizers.
With over 13 years of experience serving our communities, we know some struggle to obtain life’s necessities. The elderly and infirm, people suffering from physical and emotional disabilities and traumas, and children not getting the essentials they need. To these vulnerable human beings, Bareebo provides food, shelter, health services, and whatever else we can.

Over the years, Champions Factory has conducted a myriad of projects, reaching orphaned children, the Roma community, and individuals displaced by conflict among others. These initiatives, supported by both private and governmental donors, have varied from educational programs, sports clinics, to entrepreneurship boot camps, each designed meticulously to inspire, uplift, and empower.

Currently, we operate over 35 diverse programs in more than 40 countries, continuing our mission of personal growth and community development. We also maintain our focus on holistic development, nurturing the physical, intellectual, and entrepreneurial talents of the young people we work with, creating champions on and off the field.

Looking ahead, Champions Factory is excited to launch the FutureFounders program, an annual entrepreneurship initiative designed specifically for orphaned youth. Moreover, we are initiating the 'Sports Infrastructure in Orphanages' project, where we plan to build outdoor gyms in five orphanages in Bulgaria, thereby extending the reach of our sports-based programs. Our upcoming 'Life After Sport' program is dedicated to supporting professional and recently retired athletes in their dual career transitions, embodying our belief that sports and life skills can and should reinforce each other.

 Local Hubs  At WIA, we believe that connecting African women is the key to unlocking their potential. Bringing women together will enable them to support one another, mentor and reverse-mentor each other, and face challenges together thereby reducing losses and increasing successes.  The Hubs offer a physical space for women entrepreneurs to gather and engage in this iterative process. For many entrepreneurs, the journey of starting and running their business is a lonely one. The Hubs connects them to others experiencing similar difficulties so they have a critical support system. This can make all the difference. The first Local Hub has been launched in 2019 in partnership with Working Ladies in Kinshasa !  WIA  Code By training youth in demand-driven Information and Communications Technology (ICT) curriculum, WiA wants to prepare Africa's girls for tomorrow's jobs and unleashes the next generation of young digital innovators from the continent.  The first training sessions took place in Senegal in  2019 and more will take place in 2020 with Ivory Coast and Rwanda !

Our Sisters Opportunity (OSO) is an NGO based in Rwanda that seeks to help vulnerable girls and women achieve economic empowerment through vocational training and sustainable employment. OSO creates generations of women entrepreneurial leaders. OSO GOALS Our Programs focus on providing entrepreneurial vocational training for one year, establishing sustainable jobs for graduates, and ongoing business mentorship to graduates' start-ups. Our short-term goal includes the graduation of an average of 80% of OSO students who successfully attended and passed OSO one-year course. The second one is the number of clients/ contracts in place to kick start their own businesses while being on the OSO production chain. The third one is the consistent monthly income generated which goes towards family basic needs, savings, and re-invested in their own start-ups. Our long-term goal focuses on creating decent and sustainable jobs for all OSO graduates so that they are fully equipped to address the basic needs of them, their children, and their family members. The basic needs we focus on are access to food, clean water, children's school fees, family health insurance to access health care, and proper housing. FUTURE PLANS In the next 5 years, OSO plans to reach 10.000 girls, by expanding our Program to more 6 Districts and establishing National Women Entrepreneurship Avenue in Capital City.

The Shared Value Africa Initiative (SVAI) is a pan-African nonprofit company with an aim to assist and collaborate with organizations to build prosperous and sustainable economies and societies. Through various programmes and initiatives, the SVAI is able to implement projects that affect positive change in society, with the main focus being women and youth. Shared Value Africa Academy - implements capacity building and training for African entrepreneurs on their journey to contributing to a thriving African economy. Through Purpose Playbook Training they are empowered to be make informed decisions and use the CSV business concept when setting out to create and implement social and environmental impact and sustainability strategies. The Shared Value Africa Initiative (SVAI) research unit is available to work on any commissioned research that aligns to purposely inform action and provide information in order to make informed decision and build a shared value body of knowledge.

Instituto Phi bridges social investors with the best solutions to reduce social inequalities in Brazil. 

Luiza Serpa founded Instituto Phi in 2014, a flexible, personalized and transparent platform of social investment that aims to contribute to a less unequal and fairer world, based on truth, solidarity and humanity. Instituto Phi is led by the mission to influence individuals and companies to strategically plan their personal, family or corporate philanthropy and advise them in this process, so as to achieve greater professionalism in the Third Sector, personal satisfaction and social impact. By working through the values of efficiency, empathy, commitment and transparency, its goals are to provide resources efficiently, focused on results, for initiatives of social transformation, and to develop the practice of philanthropy in Brazil.

Acting all around the country, Phi's offices are based in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, areas of relevance in Brazil due to its economical development (dynamism), and also, social issues. The broad capacity of impact of Phi has generated important results in Brazil. Until March 2023, Phi has impacted over 2 million people, gathered over 200 social investors, supported more than 1.400 projects and mobilized over US$ 30 million to the Third Sector.  During the COVID pandemic, that deeply harmed Brazilian society, not only because of the disease itself, but also due to unemployment and the increase in social and economic inequalities, Phi and other strategical partners developed important campaigns to support and assist highly impacted communities. During 2020, Phi mobilized more than US$ 15 million for emergencies campaigns. In the same year, Instituto Phi won the Folha Social Entrepreneur Award, in the Humanitarian Aid category. In 2021, it continued to contribute to the combat of the pandemic and its consequences, through the mobilization of more than U$ 4 million and the donation of hundreds of tons of food.

Currently, Phi develops several iniciatives of transformative impact. Beyond its work monitoring recurrent projects supported by social investors in Phi's network, the Instituto also acts through programs conducted in valuable partnerships with other Brazilian social organizations. In this sense, there are some remarkable experiences, as The Much Greater Future Program (Futuro Bem Maior) of Movimento Bem Maior (Much Greater Movement), with three editions managed by Phi, it encourages the protagonism of social organizations in vulnerable communities not only with impact investment, but also with actions of institutional strengthening and connection network building. Also, in partnership with Stone Impacta and Banco da Providência, Phi has created the (Re)Consquista Program, a social and productive inclusion program in which NGOs that work with professional qualification receive training to work with the recognized Methodology of 3 Phases of Banco da Providência: human development, technical training and entrepreneurial skills. Currently, (Re)Conquista is on its fourth edition. In addition, in 2021 Phi managed the campaigns of the Coca-Cola Brazil Institute and The Coca-Cola Foundation to combat food insecurity, then in 2022 received a US$ 200K grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation, and in 2023 a US$ 85K grant from the same foundation, stablishing a successful partnership.

As its next steps, Instituto Phi intends to create a Center for Philantropical Studies in order to foster knowledge about the field in Brazil, generate solid data and instigate debates that can lead to solutions for the problems faced in the area. In addition, it is an ultimate goal for Instituto Phi to expand its action in the Northeast of Brazil, articulating a strategical network with stakeholders in the region. Phi wants to mobilize more resources and create intentional solutions to mitigate the various social and economic challenges this important region faces. As a vast country of continental dimensions, Brazil's issues are complexes, but in areas of low public investment such as education, infrastructure, health, among others, these issues have deeper roots. Thus, Instituto Phi, commitement with the combat of inequalities and the construction of a fairier world, is concerned about such situation in Brazil and has strong will to act in this sense, recognizing the Northeast as a key area to do so. Finally, Instituto Phi wants to keep bringing diverse realities closer, without judgements, in a coherent, constructive and ethical way.

Dear Friends,  Three years ago, I left my successful accounting practice and, thanks to a great deal of generous help, launched the African Development University (A.D.U.) in Niger, my dear, impoverished and troubled country. Here is an A.D.U. update and a call-to-action to help us meet an important challenge.  A.D.U. has grown to almost 200 students, 70% of whom are women. In the workplace, our students are known to be ethical and impactful; 100% of employers rate their A.D.U. interns highly.  One rising leader is Nana, a full scholarship student. After an early marriage, Nana tried to resume her education, but was repudiated and barred from seeing her young children. At A.D.U., her leadership class inspired Nana to question the judge's expedited ruling. She researched the law and learned her basic rights. Using frameworks from her negotiation class, she convinced a prominent lawyer to take her case. Today, Nana lives with her three children. She served as a well-respected intern at Niger's embassy in the US and has worked on community empowerment projects in Niger.  Another student, Feyçal, is already a job creator. An orphan, Feyçal spent two years at the national university without completing a single semester due to strikes and other issues. At A.D.U., he launched two startups, hired a dozen part time employees, and pitched his projects in a global competition in London.  Now, I must humbly and urgently ask you to help A.D.U. survive. We have a strong plan to break even in five years, but today, we need your support.  Fortunately, a generous friend visited A.D.U. and, moved by our students, offered to match any gifts received by December 31st, 2019, up to $500,000 USD. History 

2014: Farai Munjoma (founder) wins an entrepreneurial program delivered by Junior Achievement Zimbabwe where he proposes the need for a free student driven platform to help students coach and mentor each other ahead of national examinations--Shasha is in idea phase
2017: Shasha Network is incubated at the African Leadership University in Mauritius, as one of the upcoming student start-ups. The focus of Shasha Network is providing students in rural part of Africa with digital literacy 
2020: At the peak of the pandemic, Farai Munjoma receives a grant from FedEx and Facebook Africa to launch a career guidance and mentorship program for students learning from home due to lockdowns. There is an increasing gap in career guidance and access to post secondary opportunities. Shasha pivots to soft skills training to ensure students have the self awareness and knowledge to identify and pursue opportunities.
2021: While studying for his Masters in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, founder joins the University of Edinburgh incubator program. He sets up a global board of trustees and advisors and pursues the idea of setting up Shasha as a Scottish non-profit. 
2022: 830+ learners from 19 countries access Shasha Network's early version online. Organisation receives charitable status from Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR)
2023: 2500+ learners participate in the Bridge program. Partners, Scottish Edge, Schmidt Futures and Edinburgh Innovations invest in continuous growth of platform and community

Current Activities

Shasha Network’s main purpose is to equip young people in Africa with soft skills and personal development to achieve their fullest potential—we mostly deliver this support in the form of
online programming, thus increasing reach and minimising barriers to access. This work can be divided into outreach; programming; content curation and design and business development. Listed below are detailed day-to-day activities

Outreach

We engage with low to middle income communities with the end goal of working with students from those societies to grow life and professional skills to enhance their chances of career success— this is driven through the recruitment and support of partner schools, trusts and foundations which already have cohorts of students we will deliver support to virtually. Our aim is to have 900-1000 students complete our courses each month therefore with 10-12 cycles of enrolment each year we should have 10,000-11,000 students completing the Shasha program each year. We have a team focused on partnerships, we research these partners on our own or have them recommended by other preexisting collaborators in our network. Our informational bootcamps which are administered by Shasha personnel online in collaboration with on the ground school/partner organisation representatives focus on Self Leadership; Career Research, Mentorship and Personal Branding for low income students.

● For example in Zimbabwe we are partnered with Junior Achievement as a country partner to be able to deliver our training to their pipeline of high school students.
● Other partnerships include International Youth Catholic Society (IYCS) and Schmidt Futures Foundation

Programming
● The online boot camps are delivered on a monthly basis on a cohort basis. Each day has a list of learning outcomes and key lessons which have to be delivered to the students in line with the syllabus as shown on the extract below.
● Every week our mentorship team will use this guide to deliver these keys lessons to a cohort of students at (average 100) and this number is poised to grow as our organisation expands.
● Beyond delivering the content, learners also receive critical feedback which is enabled
by an operational personal behind the cohort management — ultimately we aim to deliver;

Future Planned Activities

2-3 years 
1. Shasha App: Scaling a highly optimised platform to deliver our experience seamlessly and retain scholars using it across the communities we operate.
2. Anglophone in-country reach: Leverage in-country networks with schools and grassroots organisations to grow our reach in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa. Rwanda to be our pilot territory before expanding to francophone Africa as it also speaks French.
3. Francophone in-country reach: Our pilot lessons from Rwanda should enable us to deploy in francophone Africa. We will start with Cameroon, Senegal, and then the Ivory Coast.
4. Starlink Access: Leapfrog internet infrastructure challenges. Through partnering with international schools abroad, where they will sponsor internet access through Starlink. African schools can access resources and also have pen pals with friends from their sponsoring school via email and other digital platforms. This will be called the Shasha Link.

3-5 years 
5. Endowment: Partnering with mission-aligned funders to build a USD25 million endowment to grow and support our reach
6. Zero-Rated Platform: Scale the number of learners accessing our platform for free on any local network. Telecommunications companies will cover or reduce the cost of having millions of learners access our resources on their digital platforms for free.
7. Leverage data and Artificial Intelligence (AI): Generative AI will provide us with an opportunity to create more bespoke and low-cost curated resources for Shasha scholars. We also need to leverage all the data we would have gathered to inform new areas of research and curriculum improvement.
8. Curriculum Influence: Partner with local governments to embed Shasha in local teaching and learning systems. This could be at teacher training colleges or school level.

The concept of Dream Factory Foundation was born towards the end of 2011, when the founders Lusanda Magwape and Laurian Jamie Nortje  were working in under-resourced schools in the Western Cape. Their work confronted them with the realities of lack of access to quality education, high levels of unemployment, lack of exposure to sustainable livelihoods and poverty faced by young people in these schools. The two felt a deep call to impact the lives of young people positively through an educational programme titled #BeTheDream, that connects learners to caring mentors, curricula (the Dream Tool Kit) that incorporate a sense of purpose and provides entrepreneurial and employment opportunities where they can actualize their dreams.

About YouthStart YouthStart is a non profit organisation that builds the self-confidence of opportunity-seeking young people and opens up possibilities for them to achieve their ambitions. An eight-day training programme provides young people with the right knowledge, skills and mindset to become entrepreneurs. This enables them to move forward in their lives in a positive and successful way.  An impact study conducted by VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussels) proved that 81% of YouthStart's alumni find their path in life, either by returning to school, finding employment or starting their own business.  Her Majesty Queen Mathilde has granted her Patronage to YouthStart Belgium for many years. About the training During the YouthStart training programme, 10 to 15 opportunity-seeking young people will be coached by two certified YouthStart trainers. The eight-day course, which is spread out over several weeks, will inspire young people to think and act in an entrepreneurial manner. Using their talents and dreams as a starting point, they will develop a feasible business idea. We will help turn their business idea into a business plan. On the final day of the course they have the opportunity to present their plan to an advisory board. In exchange for their efforts, they will receive the much-desired YouthStart certificate, which is powered by two major Belgian universities (Antwerp Management School and HEC Liège Management School). In 2017, 749 opportunity-seeking young people were coached during 88 training courses. Since our inception in 1998, more than 8000 young people followed our training and by 2020 we would like to reach the 10.000 mark.

		 YouthStart's history YouthStart was launched in 1998 by Gaëtan Hannecart, who in turn was inspired by the American Steve Mariotti, founder of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). Steve developed a training programme specifically for underserved high school students in the US. He believes that every young person has the potential and entrepreneurial abilities to take charge of their future. YouthStart Belgium was the first European organisation to offer the unique NFTE programme. Together with all our NFTE partners from around the world and with support from thousands of certified trainers, we have already made a difference in the lives of over 800,000 young people. The Rhiza Foundation was founded on the 11th of May in 2010 with the purpose to eradicate extreme poverty. We want to develop the roots of the communities, which are the children and youth and we usually aim towards people between 0 and 35 years old. We carry out projects in the townships South Africa. Our projects can always be categorized in one of the following subjects: education, healthcare, skills development, and enterprise development. We want to approach problems by getting to the root cause of the problems and creating solutions that take this root cause away. Therefore we have a strong focus on local ownership and self-sustainability in all of our projects. Education: we focus on Early Childhood Development to increase the quality of education for people between 2 and 6 years old. Currently most of the children in townships don't receive formal education until they are 7 years old. Healthcare: we focus on mother- and childcare including family planning and care before and after giving birth, HIV/AIDS and TB prevention and treatment and dental care. Skills Development: we train unemployed youth in relevant skills for companies or to start a small enterprise. Among the skills we have trained are among others Fashion & Design, Business Administration, Systems Development. We are linked to a social enterprise that is an employment agency that helps link trained youths with companies. ACUA's main objective is to improve the quality of life and income generation capacity of Afro-descendant and  indigenous people  who develop sustainable business based on their cultural assets. This objective is achieved through three strategies: 1. Making visible traditional knowledge and practices through documentation, research, and recognition. 2. GLLI was founded in 2015 with a mission to create opportunities for historically disadvantaged groups to end poverty through technology and entrepreneurship. The founders of GLLI spent the first three years establishing deep ties within communities in the Eastern Cape with youths, teachers, students, schools, and universities to find out what they needed. It was from this deep work that its current model and activities emerged and are showing tremendous success. Past and current activities:  - STEM and Entrepreneurship Education (from 2018 to present): We provided STEM training to over 7000 students in 31 schools in the Eastern Cape, including facilitating a cross-cultural robotics program for American and South African teenagers.  - IT repairs training and Digital transformation of small businesses: We provided IT repairs skills to 281 unemployed and under-employed youths and women with the goal of creating employment and/or transforming their businesses. - Entrepreneurship training and coaching: Facilitated the creation and sustainability of 11 successful businesses and supported 105 existing ones through entrepreneurship, business compliance, and investment readiness training, as well as investment linkages.

Design and Technology Institute is a private technical and vocational education institution accredited by the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET) in Ghana, on a mission to transform youth Technical and Vocational Education and Training  (TVET) livelihoods across West Africa.  The founder, Constance Swaniker, after graduating from KNUST saw the gap between academia and industry. She successfully established Accents and Art ltd. twenty years ago after learning her skills on the job and in industry. With this knowledge and experience, she founded DTI where there is focus on demand-driven and industry-relevant skills.  DTI has been established through a partnership with The MasterCard Foundation to provide opportunity for young people who are financially disadvantaged, especially young girls and women to acquire quality TVET, transform their lives and end the cycle of poverty.  Its vision is to 1) become West Africa's premier industrial job training and prototype center within 10 years, expanding access to training across the ECOWAS region. 2) To model green industrial practices, champion locally-sourced innovations, and celebrate gender diversity in male-dominated fields 3) To advocate for an enabling environment in West Africa for local manufacturing and sustainable jobs.  DTI offers two core programs:  i) Precision Fabrication (PF) for youth new to industry.  ii) Precision Quality (PQ) aimed at enhancing the quality of instruction at TVET instruction at TVET institutions and delivering training to master craft persons, artisans and SMEs.  We focus on what a student is expected to be able to do in the workplace - Work Place Learning - as opposed to just having theoretical knowledge.  We seek to augment our program offerings by continuous skills gap assessment with input from industry and buy-in from employers. Some of our key stakeholders include the Ministry of Education, COTVET, Artisans Association of Ghana (AAG), Ho Technical University, KNUST, National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI), Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC) and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

Techfugees genesis is from September 2015 following a global call-to-action orchestrated by Mike Butcher MBE, Editor-at-Large of TechCrunch Europe and Chairman & Founder of Techfugees, that mobilised a global tech-for-good movement in response to worldwide headlines to the Syrian refugee crisis.  Since then, the current pandemic blending with conflicts, poverty, food insecurity and climate change is now compounding effects to the humanitarian displacement crisis that has doubled over the last decade to  1% of humanity being displaced today (84 million)  and many observers predict  forced displacement to rapidly rise to 1.2 billion by 2050  due to climate change being a catalyst.  Ukraine events has resulted in 3 million fleeing, mostly women, children and elderly in 20 days with another 2 million internally displaced  The biggest humanitarian crisis since the Second World War! Faced with such unusual global circumstances requires unusual acts to reimagine new ways of working together through mutually reinforcing activities with united global collective actions.   As a volunteer-led international non-profit collective, Techfugees brings together cross-sector organisations and the humanitarian sector to combine innovations, insights and inclusion to advance refugees' rights and enable equitable access to information, education, health, work and social integration through digital technology across international markets.  Operating within the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Techfugees places displaced persons at the heart of everything our community does to uplift the lives of those who are unheard, invisible and excluded towards their betterment in empowering their inclusion to participate in the society. Helping food growers in Sierra Leone overcome hunger.

Farming Out Of Poverty (FOOP) empowers below-subsistence farmers by supplying low cost regenerative farming inputs as a service, enabling farmers to increase food production while protecting the soils. FOOP plans to work with 1,000 farmers in Sierra Leone during 2022 and to scale up that to 10,000 farmers over the next three years. The activities will be focused on Southern Sierra Leone, one of the poorest areas of the country and with the highest potential for farming. The main focus crop is rice, which is Sierra Leone's staple crop. The main targeted outputs are: • 1,000 farmers within the FOOP program increases yield 100% • 6,000 people forget hunger • 2,000 acres under regenerative agriculture • 50% of targeted farmers are women Whilst this is FOOP's first year of operation, the organization leverages on Warc's infrastructure and experience. Warc will cover $100k worth of infrastructure and overhead costs, enabling FOOP a rapid start. It will also open up 10 years of expertise, relationships, research and knowledge, so that a considerable level of impact is achieved from day one.

Uthabiti Africa is the Nairobi-based African non-profit that exists to accelerate quality, affordable childcare in Africa

The Uthabiti Africa Foundation is a non-profit founded in 2019 to catalyze systemic change in the childcare ecosystem in Africa by creating partnerships with governments and key resource organizations. Uthabiti Africa exists to accelerate quality, affordable early childhood care, education and development in Africa with an initial focus on Kenya. Together, we envision a time where all children 0-4 years have access to quality childcare and education, thereby being able to survive and thrive. A time when girls and women carers have a supportive working environment and all families are able to access quality, affordable childcare. Following a research and consultations with key childcare and ECCED stakehokders in Kenya by Uthabiti Africa, 7 key gaps were identified that included:  (1) insufficient coordination  (2) inadequate financing for childcare initiatives  (3) no systematic approach for workforce development  (4) insufficient research and data on childcare  (5) uninformed demand for quality childcare and  (6) insufficient policy framework (7) Insufficient psycho-social support to young mothers. In response to this, Uthabiti Africa was registered and developed a collaborative care for childcare that comprises of a broad range of actors in the childcare ecosystem in Africa with an aim to collaboratively enable children to access quality childcare that improves their health, wellbeing and development. In order for Uthabiti Africa to be more focused, 4 key areas of change are currently focused on:  (1)Workforce development (2)Women-led childcare enterprise development (3)Policy & legal reform (4)Collaboration & Learning

African Women on Board (AWB) was founded in 2017. The organisation began as a network of professional women coming together to increase representation of African women on corporate boards and other leadership positions. 

It is now a non-profit organisation dedicated to propelling African women and girls into leadership roles of the future. We seek to amplify African female voices, improve situations on the ground and influence changes necessary to open up a world of greater opportunity for our young women and girls.

AWB aims to stimulate women’s active participation and leadership in their workplaces, communities and governments. We are focused on advancing narratives (through storytelling, advocacy campaigns and other convenings) to improve realities for African women and girls by working with decision-makers, private sector partners, civil society actors and media around the world to inform policy development, programming, and capacity building.

Operating at the intersection of the private and development sector, we employ our network and convening power to provoke key stakeholders in the private sector to engage with the public sector, academia and civil society on contemporary issues, such as gender equality, social mobility, ESG and community impact. Road to 100 Million Climate Soldiers in Africa
AWB's ‘Road to 100 Million Climate Soldiers in Africa’ has been specifically designed to educate our own people on the dangers of the changes to our everyday lives that are coming. But even more than that, we know that Africa represents a massive, young, and passionate community, and we want to mobilise that energy so that the continent can become the biggest advocate for climate solutions on the planet!

Most Africans do not understand the urgency of climate change. Without awareness and understanding, the ordinary African will not have the efficacy to take actions which can help stop and potentially reverse the trend. Current media framing, discourse and climate change literacy efforts utilise the Western perspective to explain the impact of climate change. For example, melting ice and rising seas mean little to someone who has never seen snow or ice or who lives in a landlocked region. Being told that the extinction of species like polar bears is a major problem in the global ecosystem holds no meaning to people who have never seen a polar bear except perhaps in books or movies. Relatability is a key variable that can elicit the right responses to this global problem; flooding, irregular rainfall patterns, disrupted farming cycles, air pollution’s threat to health, deforestation, erosion, overgrazing, and the effects of fossil fuel, are more likely to catalyse interest towards minimising the effects of climate change for the African audience. For climate change to be understood by the average African, it must be communicated using relevant examples rooted in African reality.

Climate change literacy is required to improve understanding of climate change concerns, and encourage individual action to address this important issue. AWB is facilitating awareness building and narrative change to shape a sustainable future through climate education programs and global media campaigns that will speak directly to Africans, particularly young people.

Climate Photo Essay Prize:
Towards the end of 2022, AWB in collaboration with Africa Soft Power launched our Climate Change Photo Essay Prize, aimed at raising awareness of, providing information on, and inspiring action in the fight against climate change.

Budding photographers aged 18 -30yrs from across the continent of Africa and the global diaspora community entered over 200 photographs to the prize. The prize shows how photography can be a powerful tool for climate literacy and amplifies African perspectives on the conversation around climate change. The Photo Essay Prize is the pilot programme of our wider 'Road to 100million Climate Soldiers' campaign - which we view as the first step in securing climate solutions.

The works of our finalists are on a global tour – which began in Nairobi, Kenya, during Africa Climate Week, at the beginning of September. Since then, these award-winning works have been exhibited at The Africa Center in New York during the UN General Assembly. They are scheduled to be showcased at The Africa Centre during Frieze Week in London this October – one of the world’s leading art fairs. They will also be featured at COP28 in Dubai this December.

COP28:
This year's Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), hosted in the United Arab Emirates will focus on the cross-cutting themes of technology and innovation, inclusion (youth, women, local communities, etc), finance, and frontline communities, and "emphasize a ‘leave no one behind’ approach to climate action" - all focus areas that are important to us. Our convening at COP28 will be the culmination of the first phase of the Road to 100 Million Climate Soldiers in Africa project. 

Climate equity programming:
We want to take our climate equity programming to the next level and (with the help of like-minded partners) design climate education programs and global media campaigns that will speak directly to Africans, particularly young people, and those in the diaspora community. Together, we can help shape a more collaborative, environmentally friendly, and economically viable future for all… engaging, training, and inspiring young people along the way.
