It’s a short story…
Storyland Collective is an intergenerational arts and culture organization rooted in decolonial storytelling, family literacy, and cultural healing. We host family-centered storytelling and art sessions across Oakland and the Bay Area, centering families who are Black, Brown, Indigenous, immigrant, disabled, LGBTQIA+, system-impacted, and housing-insecure.
It’s a long story…
Storyland Collective brings literacy into the neighborhood spaces families already know and trust, creating joyful, culturally rooted experiences that help children and caregivers build positive relationships with books, stories, and one another.
When children see themselves reflected in stories, when caregivers feel welcomed into literacy experiences, and when reading becomes part of community life, families are more likely to develop lasting habits that support learning long after a program ends.
Programming activities include:
- Pop-up Storyland community storytime events in beloved community spaces (libraries, parks, small businesses, and cultural hubs).
- Civic weaving through collaboration with local organizations, social services, and artists to join events, creating resource hubs and cultural economies.
Together, these community activities make literacy feel alive, relational, and rooted in belonging!
