At SDP, we train Great Danes—each one exclusively—as service dogs for people living with disabilities that affect balance and mobility. Please note that we work with Great Danes selectively because we find that they display the disposition as well as size and weight needs that balance and mobility recipients require.
Individuals who have benefitted from our mobility service dogs include those living with amputations, ataxia, cerebral palsy, military injuries, multiple sclerosis, myoclonus, paraparesis, Parkinson’s disease, peripheral neuropathy, rheumatoid arthritis, spina bifida, spinal muscular atrophy, and traumatic brain injury.
The SDP serves children and adults, primarily throughout New England and New York, and veterans nationwide, whose disability impacts their movement and whose independence and quality of life would be enhanced with the assistance of a service dog. We carefully partner each canine graduate with a qualified recipient, donating the service dog at no cost to recipient. Since 2004, we’ve donated more than 150 dogs.
SDP continuously advocates for individuals with disabilities, uses the services of volunteers and staff of all capabilities, providing community service opportunities for teenagers to adults, and provides accommodations to ensure that the SDP property is accessible for all.
