In everything we do we are vastly reliant on external donations and support. Much of the Rijksmuseum collection has been brought together thanks to individual gifts. All our activities, from exhibitions to research, are made possible thanks to your generous support. Whether your donation is large or small, every bit helps. So donate and support the Rijksmuseum!

A museum of art and history with a representative survey of Dutch art and history since the Middle Ages, the Rijksmuseum has on display 8,000 objects of art and history, from their total collection of 1 million objects, among which are some masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Johannes Vermeer. The museum also has a small Asian collection which is on display in the Asian pavilion.

The Rijksmuseum links individuals with art and history.

At the Rijksmuseum, art and history take on new meaning for a broad-based, contemporary national and international audience. As a national institute, the Rijksmuseum offers a representative overview of Dutch art and history from the Middle Ages onwards, and of major aspects of European and Asian art. The Rijksmuseum keeps, manages, conserves, restores, researches, prepares, collects, publishes, and presents artistic and historical objects, both on its own premises and elsewhere.

Women of the Rijksmuseum

Women of the Rijksmuseum is the Rijksmuseum research programme dedicated to improving gender balance. The project began on 8 March 2021, International Women’s Day, when the Rijksmuseum exhibited three works by women artists in the Gallery of Honour for the first time in history. Mission Women of the Rijksmuseum conducts research that aims to strengthen and embed the role of women in cultural history, to foster gender equality and the importance of diversity and inclusion. Aims The purpose of the research project is to increase the visibility of women’s contributions to Dutch cultural history and to incorporate their stories in exhibitions, media outputs, publications and the presentation of the collection. There are three central activities of this research project: Identifying and supplementing information on women artists represented in the Rijksmuseum collection and ensuring their records are available in our database. Conducting research into the life stories of women connected with objects in the collection, and filling gaps in information on women represented in works of art. Conducting research into the history of the Rijksmuseum with particular attention for women collectors, donors, patrons and former staff members.
