Animals

People for Animals Uttarakhand (PFA Uttarakhand) is a grassroots organisation working to protect animals through rescue, rehabilitation, policy reform, and the promotion of humane farming practices. Our work combines on-ground care with long-term system change.

We run a no-tie, no-cage sanctuary called the Happy Home Sanctuary that provides lifelong care to horses, mules, donkeys, cats, goats, sheep, and poultry birds rescued from cruelty, overwork, sacrifice and unsafe situations. A major focus is the welfare of working equines used on tough mountain pilgrimage routes. To expand this work, we are establishing a new Equine Sanctuary in Jammu for over 250 rescued equines.

Beyond rescue, we strengthen animal welfare systems across India. Through the Ahimsa Fellowship, we train young professionals to work with government departments, improve enforcement of animal protection laws, and build district-level welfare capacity. We also conduct training for police, judicial officers, and veterinary officials. This year we have launched another program called Applied Animal Advocacy Certificate Program which is mainly designed for working professionals.

PFA Uttarakhand supports the shift toward humane, cruelty-free farming by helping institutions adopt ethical sourcing practices and training farmers in cage-free and high-welfare production systems.

During disasters, we provide emergency food, veterinary care, and on-ground support for animals affected by floods, landslides, and extreme weather.

Our Mission: To rescue and rehabilitate animals in distress, ensure long-term protection through compassionate infrastructure, and create lasting change through policy strengthening, education, and ethical farming models.

Future Plans:

  1. Sanctuary Infrastructure
  • Upgrade sanctuary infrastructure like species specific houses, reconstruction of boundary walls, etc.
  • Upgrade to a more sustainable set up like solar lights and heaters
  • Scale Pilgrim Route Protections
  • Launch the Jammu Equine Sanctuary
  • Operate Mobile Vet Units during Vaishno Devi pilgrimage season
  • Conduct pilgrim-facing campaigns and work with local authorities
  1. Expand Policy Engagement
  • Institutionalise trainings across more states and departments
  • Launch advocacy campaigns for stricter enforcement of PCA laws
  1. Grow Cage-Free Demonstration Program
  • Establish additional training centers
  • Onboard more farmers to cruelty-free practices
  • Create market linkages for ethically produced eggs

Lifelong Care for 300+ Rescued Animals in India

Happy Home Sanctuary is a lifelong home for about 300 rescued animals who were never meant to survive what they came from: abused working equines, abandoned cats, goats saved from sacrifice, and poultry birds spared from factory systems. Here they live under a simple promise: no tie, no cage, no exploitation. All the inmates move freely in their designated areas, form bonds, rest in the sun, and heal at their own pace. For many of them, this sanctuary is the first place they have ever known safety. But sanctuary is not just rescue, it is a lifelong commitment. Every animal here depends entirely on us for food, medical treatment, and daily care. To remain fully transparent with our supporters, the funds raised will go directly toward the essential annual cost of keeping this refuge running: 12-month basic care expenses Nutritious food, the foundation of recovery: Equine feed (187 animals): $34,700 Cat feed (71 animals): $8,400 Goat feed (30 animals): $960 Poultry feed (12 birds): $240 Medicines, wound care, treatment supplies: $18,100 Caregivers and veterinary supervision: Salaries for caretakers & vet team: $24,100 Total annual care cost: $86,600 Many residents require years of rehabilitation. Some will need lifelong support. Sanctuary means they are never abandoned a second time. You are not funding a one-time rescue. You are helping uphold a promise: once an animal reaches Happy Home Sanctuary, they are safe for life. Every contribution becomes food, treatment, and dignity for animals who finally have a home. Join us in protecting a space where animals are allowed to live freely and not as commodities, but as lives that matter. Donate now. Help keep the sanctuary safe.
