PauseAI US is a grassroots organization demanding a pause on frontier AI development until it is safe to proceed.
PauseAI US advocates for an international treaty to pause frontier AI development. But we don't need to achieve that treaty to have positive impact-- most of our positive impact will likely come from moving the Overton window and making more moderate AI Safety measures more possible. Advocating straightforwardly for what we consider the best solution is an excellent frame for educating the general public and elected officials on AI danger-- we don't know what we're doing building powerful AI, so we should wait until we do to proceed-- compared to tortured and confusing discussions of other solutions like alignment that have no clear associated actions for those outside the technical field.
To fulfill our goal of moving the Overton window in the direction of simply not building AGI while it is dangerous to do so, PauseAI US has three major areas of programming: media, volunteer groups, and grassroots lobbying.
Media: Most Americans have not heard that frontier AI can be paused. In mainstream media, at protests, and in everyday conversations, we bring Pause into the Overton Window. We lead with a big ask: Pause AI. If we pause, we win. If we fall short and get strong regulation, that’s still a better world. PauseAI US has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Bloomberg, Fortune, Business Insider, and many others.
Volunteer-led Local Groups: PauseAI US recruits and trains local leaders to organize public outreach in their city. We equip them to run events, collect petitions, and set up constituent meetings in their districts. We have founded over 50 local groups across 25 states.
Grassroots Lobbying: We train and equip volunteers on grassroots lobbying so they can show up in person and demand a pause. We believe constituents speaking plainly and directly to their representatives about the risk of human extinction from AI will be critical in enacting legislation. We also run the digital infrastructure that makes it easy for any supporter to call or email lawmakers. To date, we have held 194 meetings with lawmakers, and driven over 5,000 calls and emails.

Help PauseAI US get a powerful grassroots advocacy CRM!
PauseAI US is a grassroots advocacy org, demanding a pause on frontier AI development until it can be done safely. We've inspired over a thousand calls from constituents to their representatives, with 500 going toward successfully preventing AI regulation preemption. And those are the calls that are reported to us! But we could do so much more with the proper tools. Help us license the Muster Advocacy CRM (https://www.muster.com/product). Currently, we have to talk people through multiple steps to get them on the call, and we're tracking calls through a Google form. People can easily get lost on any step, and their calls can easily go untracked. A real CRM for advocacy would allow people to make calls in the CRM embedded on our website, which would include up-to-date information on their reps, and their calls would be automatically tracked without them having to fill out an additional form. And Muster would unlock more sophisticated campaigns by managing, for example, calls about all the votes on a piece of legislation in one place and giving us analytics into our advocate users. Lower friction means more calls, which means our elected officials get a stronger picture of what the people think about AI danger. $10,000 gets us 2 years (minimum purchase) of the "Advocacy Only" plan.
