NCTFJ is a non-governmental organization with charity status, designed to be the primary source of financial support for Jamaica's Protected Areas System, in collaboration with government and non-government partners. We bridge the funding shortfall required for the operation, improvement and ultimately self-sufficiency of protected areas. NCTFJ is unique in that it has the legal mandate to work with the full cross-section of actors in Jamaica's protected
area management and use: NGOs, community-based organizations, private sector and government-designated protected area managers - thus the only organisation that can support Jamaica's entire ecosystem of actors. This overarching mandate allows for avoidance of duplication, exploitation of synergies, and centralized coordination of funds towards greater efficiency in protected area management. NCTFJ works with government to fill funding gaps; with civil society to provide technical support and a stronger voice to issues of concern through formal channels; with international donors and
private sector to provide a recognized structure, through our formal status as a trust fund, to mobilize and manage resources for conservation; and with both donors and beneficiaries to provide accountability.
NCTFJ has provided JMD 145,000,000 in grants since 2020 supporting effective management of 188,000 hectares of protected areas, strengthening capacities of 467 persons in sustainable livelihoods, conservation, research, infrastructure preservation and development, as well as education and enforcement. The trust fund has also been instrumental in providing recovery grants during Covid-19 pandemic and Hurricane Beryl that affected the island in 2024.
