Here's how it works: Each year, the three park superintendents and their staff identify critical projects in need of support. With our community, WNPF raises the funds to make these projects a reality. Together, we sustain between 30 and 40 projects and programs each year that would otherwise go unfunded.

Beginning in 1989, a small group of individuals guided by Ken and RuAnn Ewing of Rogers started meeting with the single purpose of developing a concept plan for a residential field science center in the Arkansas Ozarks. Those early planning sessions resulted in The Ozark Natural Science Center incorporation in 1990 and subsequent non-profit, 501 (c)(3) status in 1993.

In 1992, the Center hosted its first residential program: a two-week Wet’n Wild camp, part of the Arkansas Enrichment for the Gifted in Summer (AEGIS) program of the Arkansas Department of Education. Since the science center was under construction, campers stayed in platform tents and dined in a partially completed dining room. By 1994, the Ewing Centre was complete and housed administrative offices and the kitchen and dining hall. That same year, ONSC began offering residential school-based programming for 700 Rogers and Bentonville fifth grade students.

Currently, the central campus includes three lodges, an education building, guest housing, faculty housing, the Stewart Springfield Memorial Outdoor Classroom, an observation deck, and almost eight miles of maintained hiking trails. ONSC’s school-based programming now offers hands-on, experiential field science opportunities to more than 3,000 students from northwest and central Arkansas and northeast Oklahoma..

• Critical - due to a biodiverse and rich ecosystem, water importance, CO2 relevance or the severity of its threats.

• Unknown - with poor media coverage and lacking of effective safeguards.

• Underfinanced - running budgets that barely allow for the subsistence of the project.

Our current main mission is supporting Upemba National Park in DRC. This is one of the oldest and largest African wilderness at 13.000 KM2 (1.3 M ha) with an outstanding biodiversity that has lived in harmony for millions of years, until now. 

The park is facing some critical challenges:

• The DRC Government launched a oil and gas exploration rights auction in August 2022 (https://wapo.st/3zV59Bw) that covers most of the park! Check the "Upemba" block here: https://bit.ly/oilblocks. This activity would undoubtedly destroy its ecosystem and pollute the waters of the lufira basin (https://bit.ly/lufirabasin) an internationally recognized wetland and river with endemic species that supply water to most DRC and Africa! 

• The DRC Government approved in July 2022 a project for the construction of the Sombwe Dam (https://bit.ly/articledam) in the park itself. This also constitutes a major threat to the park's ecosystem.

• Predatory poaching, illegal mining and lodging. These activities are carried out by multiple actors that include armed militias, local communities for subsistence and organized mafias from abroad. Their goal is to finance their criminal activities obtaining ivory from the elephants, coltan (that mineral on your phone), Copper, Tin and many other minerals.

• Generalised corruption from the political class further difficult the labor done on the field.

Our plans include:

• Launch and fund regenerative finance (ReFi) communities and projects based on web3 that provide a sustainable income for the stedwards of nature.

• Run awareness campaigns that involve the international, national and local communities and advocate from the top (diplomacy) and the bottom (grassroots movements).

• Run sustainable development projects that allow supporting the local communities that live in poverty.

• Fund to a proper level all the conservation activities that are already taking place.

• Provide a decent income to the hundreds of rangers that protect the park and risk their lives for nature.

In 1939, a small group of passionate local citizens saw the need to conserve the beautiful desert environment. One was Swedish botanist Gustaf Starck, who found like-minded residents by posting a sign that read “Save the Desert.”

With the support of social influencers of the time such as Gertrude Divine Webster, the Garden’s presence grew. Nearly eight decades later, thanks to leadership and investments from many individuals, Desert Botanical Garden has blossomed from a dream into a living museum.

The Garden’s vision is to be the premier center in the world for the exhibition, research and conservation of desert plants. The Garden strives to be an indispensable resource for learning about cactus, agave and other desert plants of the Sonoran Desert and the world. Founded in 2004, the Civic Center Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the City of Denver restore, enhance and activate Civic Center Park.    To accomplish these goals, the Civic Center Conservancy's efforts focus around events and programming to activate Civic Center; public awareness and engagement; advocacy on design, connectivity and infrastructure issues; and fundraising for capital improvements, activities and initiatives to support and revitalize the park. The Conservancy has a formal cooperative agreement with the City and County of Denver designating it as the official fundraising vehicle for Civic Center Park.
