LakeHub Foundation is a Kenyan nonprofit organization founded in 2016 to unlock the potential of young people through technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital skills development. Based in Kisumu, we were established to address the significant disparities in access to quality technology education, innovation infrastructure, and employment opportunities that exist outside Kenya's capital city. Our work is driven by the belief that talent is equally distributed, but opportunity is not. By creating inclusive pathways into the digital economy, we enable young people—particularly women, underserved communities, and those from low-income backgrounds—to build sustainable livelihoods and contribute to Africa's growing technology ecosystem.

Our mission is to empower young people with future-ready digital skills, entrepreneurial capabilities, and access to meaningful employment while strengthening innovation ecosystems that drive inclusive economic growth. We envision an Africa where every young person, regardless of geography or socioeconomic background, has the opportunity to thrive in the digital economy.

Since our founding, LakeHub Foundation has grown from a community technology hub into one of the leading innovation organizations in Western Kenya. We have developed a strong track record of designing and implementing programs that respond to local labor market needs while preparing young people for opportunities in global technology industries. Our work combines technical education, entrepreneurship support, innovation, mentorship, ecosystem building, and partnerships with governments, academic institutions, development agencies, and the private sector.

Our activities span four interconnected areas:

  1. Technology Education and Workforce Development

Our flagship initiative is Zone01 Kisumu, Kenya's first peer-to-peer software engineering school based on the internationally recognized 01 Edu model. Unlike traditional education systems, Zone01 Kisumu uses a project-based, gamified, peer-to-peer learning methodology that removes barriers such as prior coding experience or university degrees. Learners are selected based on aptitude and motivation through a rigorous assessment process before embarking on an intensive software engineering program.

Students develop practical skills in software engineering, algorithms, systems programming, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, web development, cloud computing, and data technologies by completing progressively challenging real-world projects. The program emphasizes collaboration, problem-solving, resilience, communication, and continuous learning—competencies that employers increasingly value in today's rapidly evolving technology landscape.

In addition to technical training, learners receive career readiness support, professional development, workplace skills training, mentorship, and opportunities to work on commercial and community projects that provide practical experience before entering the workforce.

  1. Entrepreneurship and Innovation

LakeHub Foundation supports entrepreneurs and early-stage startups through incubation, business development services, mentorship, networking opportunities, and connections to investors and markets. We believe that entrepreneurship is a powerful driver of job creation and economic transformation, particularly for young people.

Our innovation programs support entrepreneurs working across sectors including agriculture, climate resilience, healthcare, education, financial inclusion, manufacturing, and digital services. Through structured incubation and acceleration support, founders strengthen their business models, improve their products, validate markets, and prepare for investment.

We also organize hackathons, innovation challenges, startup showcases, and community events that encourage collaboration between entrepreneurs, developers, researchers, businesses, and public institutions.

  1. Digital Inclusion and Women's Economic Empowerment

Ensuring equitable access to technology opportunities is central to our work. We intentionally design programs that address barriers faced by women and marginalized groups, including childcare responsibilities, financial constraints, lack of safe learning spaces, and limited access to professional networks.

Our women-focused initiatives create supportive environments where women can build confidence, develop technical skills, and access career opportunities in technology. We have implemented women-only software engineering selection programs, digital skills initiatives for women entrepreneurs, and e-commerce programs that help women-owned businesses increase their income through digital platforms.

Beyond technology training, our programs strengthen financial inclusion, digital literacy, business management, and leadership skills to improve long-term economic outcomes for women and their families.

  1. Innovation Ecosystem Development

LakeHub Foundation serves as a convening organization that brings together government agencies, universities, development partners, technology companies, investors, entrepreneurs, and civil society organizations to strengthen the regional innovation ecosystem.

We actively facilitate partnerships that improve access to technology infrastructure, industry expertise, employment opportunities, and funding. We also host public events, conferences, workshops, policy dialogues, and community engagement activities that promote knowledge sharing and collaboration across sectors.

Over the years, we have worked with a diverse range of national and international partners to implement high-impact programs focused on youth employment, digital transformation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive economic development.

Our work has demonstrated that world-class technology education can thrive outside traditional urban centers when learners are provided with the right environment, support systems, and opportunities.

Looking ahead, LakeHub Foundation is entering a new phase of growth focused on expanding access to high-quality technology education across Kenya. We are scaling the Zone01 model beyond Kisumu through strategic partnerships that will allow more young people to access industry-aligned software engineering education regardless of their location.

We are also strengthening pathways from learning to employment by expanding apprenticeships, employer partnerships, industry projects, and freelance opportunities that enable graduates to gain practical experience while earning an income. At the same time, we continue to integrate emerging technologies—including artificial intelligence—into our curriculum to ensure our learners remain competitive in the global digital economy.

In parallel, we are expanding programs that support entrepreneurs and micro, small, and medium enterprises to adopt digital technologies, improve productivity, and create jobs within their communities. We also plan to deepen our work in digital public infrastructure, innovation for sustainable development, and inclusive digital transformation that benefits historically underserved populations.

Ultimately, LakeHub Foundation exists to ensure that geography, gender, or economic background do not determine a young person's future. By combining innovative education models, entrepreneurship support, ecosystem partnerships, and a strong commitment to inclusion, we are building a pipeline of skilled talent, innovative entrepreneurs, and technology leaders who will contribute to Africa's social and economic transformation for decades to come.
