Lagos Food Bank Initiative is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing hunger, improving nutrition, and strengthening food security for vulnerable communities in Nigeria. Many families in underserved communities struggle daily to access nutritious food, leaving children and mothers particularly vulnerable to malnutrition. Our mission is to bridge this gap by providing immediate food assistance while promoting sustainable solutions that empower communities to achieve long-term food security.
The Nutritious Meal Plan Intervention (NUMEPLAN) focuses on improving nutrition among pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children. Through the provision of nutrition support and education, the program helps prevent malnutrition and supports healthy development during the critical early stages of life.
The Family Farming Program promotes sustainable food production by empowering women and vulnerable households with training, seeds, and farming resources. This initiative enables families to cultivate vegetables and rear livestocks, improving household nutrition while also creating opportunities for additional income.
The School Feeding Program provides nutritious meals to children in underserved schools. By addressing hunger among students, the program helps improve school attendance, enhance concentration in the classroom, and support the overall well-being and development of children.
Through the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), Lagos Food Bank Initiative distributes essential food supplies to widows, persons living with disabilities, and low-income families in underserved communities. This program provides immediate food relief and helps families meet their basic nutritional needs.
The organization also implements the Agricultural Recovery Program, which focuses on reducing food waste at the farm level by recovering surplus or unsold farm produce that might otherwise go to waste. Recovered produce is redistributed to vulnerable communities, helping to feed families while strengthening sustainable food systems.
Through these integrated programs, Lagos Food Bank Initiative addresses both the immediate and long-term drivers of hunger. Donations from individuals, foundations, and corporate partners enable the organization to expand its reach, provide nutritious food to vulnerable populations, and create sustainable solutions that help communities move from food insecurity toward resilience and self-sufficiency.
