The Heart Care and Research Foundation was registered as a not for profit in Kigali in 2018. It is governed by a board of Rwandan and international architects, medics and educators.

The corner stone of the hospital was put down in December 2021 in the presence of First Lady Jeanette Kagame who is now the Patron of the Foundation.
Construction of the hospital is ongoing with the Foundations completed. The Plan is for the Hospital to be completed by Summer 2024.

The Hospital will offer state of the art cardiovascular care for children and adults in Rwanda and the surrounding regions. The health care will be free at point of entry without discrimination.

The aim of the Hospital is to build local capacity in the region by creating a Centre of Excellence. The Heart Centre will be a Training hub for doctors, nurses, technicians and clinical researchers. In particular the trainees will link in with the Aswan Heart Centre which will act as a training hub for the Rwandan Heart Centre.
