Global Leading Light is a nonprofit organization working within underserved communities (townships and rural areas) in South Africa’s Eastern Cape to create opportunities for young people, especially girls and young women to reduce generational poverty through STEM and Entrepreneurship skills.

We run focus on empowering children and youth with real-world digital skills through educational and economic empowerment programs:

Coding, robotics and AI for rural schools: This program aims to lay a strong foundation for children in STEM careers by nurturing curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The program teaches coding, The program is a transformative solution to the pressing issue of youth unemployment in South Africa, addressing the skills gap and cultivating interest in STEM fields. In collaboration with the department of education we provide a cost-effective hands-on coding, robotics and AI programs in under-resourced schools to children from low-income communities. Financial inclusion through IT repairs and entrepreneurship: Since 2018, our IT repairs and entrepreneurship program has trained over 100 young women, most of them single mothers—in mobile device repair and business development.

Fuel a Rural Child’s Future with Robotics & Coding

Over the past 12 months, we have trained over 1500 learners and 40 teachers and provided 11 unemployed youth with meaningful work as STEM facilitators through our Recyclebot Builders program. This program aims to lay a strong foundation in STEM for children in underserved communities STEM through a coding and robotics program that uses recycled materials and low-cost modern robotics kits. We also reached nearly 20,000 students in 24 schools with internet safety in the same year. Watch this short video of our robotics project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwV50eZQfqE&feature=youtu.be Our program made a big difference. Despite this great work, global challenges facing the philanthropy space stopped our funding and had to pause the program. At the same time, the demand is higher than ever. Rural schools are asking us to return. Teachers want to keep the momentum going. students are hungry for hands-on, exciting learning that connects them to the future. WHAT WE NEED We are now working to launch 3 Rural Robotics Labs in public schools across the Eastern Cape, South Africa’s poorest province. These labs will give students aged 5 to 12 years old direct access to coding, robotics, and basic AI skills using affordable, innovative kits made for low-resource environments. Each lab will: Serve 300+ students every year (Allow 30 students to participate at a time) Be run in close partnership with school staff we train to continue the work Our Goal: $7,500 for 3 Labs We’re raising $7,500 to equip and support three labs for one full year. Each lab costs $2,500, and covers: Low-cost innovative robotics and coding kits, as well as recycled materials from the community Basic setup and safe storage in the school Training for teachers and support for facilitators Tools to help learners explore robotics, programming, and AI, even offline Together, these labs will reach at least 900 learners per year. Why this matters Most kids in these communities have never touched a robot or tried their hands on coding. They’ve never imagined themselves building anything digital because no one showed them it was possible. This project makes it possible. We’re not just teaching robotics. We’re building confidence. We’re giving kids a reason to stay curious. We’re creating access where there is none and doing it in a way that’s low-cost, high-impact, and made for the realities of rural Africa. FOR DONORS All donors will receive a digital thank-you from the students and teachers who benefit from your support. If you give $2,500 or more (to fund a full lab), you’ll also get: A short impact report and photos from “your” lab Recognition on a sign at the school and on our website An invitation to visit the lab and meet the students (if you're nearby or visiting South Africa) Opportunities to connect virtually with the students or support as a company team JOIN US We’re ready to relaunch and students are ready to build. Help us bring robotics and real opportunity back to these classrooms. $2,500 = 1 Lab = 300+ students impacted. Let’s get it done.
