For the past 13 years, the EKAM Foundation has worked to provide quality healthcare to underprivileged children and mothers in India, as well as to facilitate their holistic well-being. By collaborating with the government, private sector, civil society organizations, and communities, our programs bridge the gap between public health centers and the community, making quality healthcare accessible to everyone. EKAM Foundation aims to reduce child and maternal deaths and bring about sustainable development by improving the overall well-being of the mother, child and community.

Dr. Sailakshmi Balijepalli, a presidential awardee and an Ashoka Fellow, founded EKAM (https://www.ekam.ngo/) in 2009. The mission of Team EKAM is to carry forward Dr. Sai’s vision of “No child should be denied the right to healthcare due to financial constraints.” EKAM helps the most vulnerable mothers and babies not only survive, but also thrive.

  4. More than 4,000 Para-medical staff trained

  5. More than 14,000 children in Tamil Nadu provided life-saving medical care

  6. More than 63,000 children benefitted from medical camps and referrals

• Save a Child - Financial support provided towards lifesaving medical treatment of children

• Maternal and Child Health awareness

• There is an imminent need to strengthen the health system of Tamil Nadu and create maternal and child health awareness among the marginalized communities.

A Hug of Life: Kangaroo care for premature babies

It takes just $9 to save a child. “A Hug of Life” is a campaign aimed at raising awareness and funds to provide KMC kits to mothers of premature and low-birth-weight babies. This initiative aligns with EKAM’s commitment to reducing infant mortality by promoting life-saving practices for vulnerable newborns. India accounts for about 3.5 million preterm births each year, the highest in the world . This makes Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) essential as it helps reduce mortality in these vulnerable newborns by providing critical warmth and bonding​. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) includes early and prolonged skin-to-skin contact for 8-24 hours per day (as many hours as possible) with the mother or a substitute caregiver and exclusive and frequent breastfeeding. KMC is proven to save premature babies by reducing hypothermia and occurrence of illness such as severe infection/sepsis, reduce hypoglycaemia, improving baby’s growth and reducing death of the babies. Ekam's KMC kit contains Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) sling bag, cap-booties-mittens set. Just at $9, a baby's life can be prolonged.
