Rescue is a risky business, especially right now. With adoptions at historic lows, our fosters are keeping more dogs than ever, and sometimes heartbreaking accidents happen. On Christmas evening, one of our fosters rushed Bella  to the ER after a sudden dog attack left her with a severe wound dangerously close to her rectum and colon. Bella required urgent surgery  and a two-day emergency stay , leaving us with a $5,000 vet bill. She will need continued care to prevent infection and heal properly. Bella is a young, under-confident Cane Corso who didn’t have the best start in life. None of this was her fault, and this incident was completely unanticipated. We’re a small, grassroots rescue, and we need our community now more than ever. If everyone gives a little, it truly adds up. This friendly, adventure-loving middle-ager stole our hearts the moment he arrived! Despite being let down time and again, Dexter has never lost his faith in people (or dogs!). He truly loves everyone. Pulled from the county clink by a hopeful adopter, Dexter’s plans unfortunately fell through. After bouncing around for much of last year, he finally joined our foster family earlier this year. BUT his journey just took another unexpected turn. A mass in Dexter’s neck suddenly developed, grew, and ruptured — sending him into emergency surgery. Both bottom incisors were removed due to infection, which vets suspect caused a rapidly swelling/burst lymph node. We have a biopsy sample on hold, just in case this doesn't resolve the mass. The Good News: Dexter is healing well and in great spirits. Now, only time will tell if the surgery has fully corrected the problem.
