Help rural populations in Malawi to access safe drinking water.

BASEflow was founded and established in February 2017 with the following vision for change: 'a world where no well runs dry'. BASEflow's core mission is to improve the sustainability of groundwater sources for rural populations to access safe drinking water, by empowering both public and private sector actors with the appropriate knowledge, skills, technologies, and innovations to sustainably harness groundwater sources. Our slogan, '(re)discover groundwater', highlights the importance of reimagining our understanding of groundwater sources, in order to leverage it sustainably and meet the needs of rural populations in the context of an ever-increasing demand on this resource. To ensure the effective achievement of our mission, the following implementation strategies are employed: - Model innovations: BASEflow develops innovative models to address some of the most pressing challenges in groundwater service delivery. These models are tested to determine their effectiveness, and the learnings are documented and shared with the sector for potential adoption at scale. - Partnerships: BASEflow engages in strategic partnerships with academia and influential actors from government and non-governmental organisations. We will also participate in high-level forums for knowledge exchange and advocacy. - Evidence for change: BASEflow conducts evidence generation activities and disseminates key information in a creative manner to ensure that evidence is used for effective service delivery. These activities have included research, mapping exercises, borehole forensics, and sustainability checks, among others. - Capacity building: BASEflow builds the capacity of sector actors on sustainable groundwater service delivery by conducting trainings, developing guidance documents as needed and conducting field demonstrations where necessary to impart skills and knowledge. - Demand generation: BASEflow engages in awareness raising activities, using their strengths in creative communication, to create demand for quality water supply service provision and increase accountability.

BASEflow's Emergency Response to Climate Shocks

Flood. Destroy. Rebuild. Repeat. Let’s Break This Cycle! In March this year , thousands of Malawians ran for safety as heavy rains turned into floods. 69,088 households were affected. Over 6,000 families were displaced. Lives were lost. This is no longer an emergency. It is a pattern. Climate shocks are becoming more frequent and intense, and communities cannot rebuild their water systems every time it floods. BASEflow is breaking that cycle. BASEflow piloted 20 flood-proof hand pumps in the areas hardest hit across Southern Malawi. After floodwaters subsided, the water still kept flowing. Families continued to access safe, uncontaminated drinking water, which played a vital role in their ability to recover and rebuild their lives after the floods. This is what resilience looks like. Now we want to reach more communities with this solution. We are raising support to flood-proof 10 water points across southern Malawi, protecting water access for more than 3,000 people before the next disaster strikes. Your support will help us: Protect critical water infrastructure before floods hit Ensure continuous access to safe drinking water during and after disasters Break the costly cycle of damage and rebuilding We have already developed a Flood-Proof Hand Pump Manual , which is open-source and now being used in 21 countries. The solution is ready. The need is urgent. Now we need your support to act at scale.
