Science & Technology

At Homeworld, we believe we can engineer the creativity of an entire field. As individuals, we operated in environments that transitioned into hyperproductivity, namely Silicon Valley for AI and Kendall Square for medical biotech. Now as Homeworld Collective, we create the conditions for the climate biotech community to transition into rapid, self-perpetuating progress to planetary challenges.

We have funded 25 projects and engaged more than 1,000 researchers in high-impact initiatives around the world. Our portfolio ranges from carbon capture to proteins that unlock local fertilizer production. Everything we do is part of a cohesive thesis for field growth: building connective tissue for the community, catalyzing exchange of ideas, capital, and collaboration.

Inspired by successful community-driven initiatives like ImageNet and the Human Genome Project, Homeworld implements three interlocking systems:

  • Problem Repository: Mapping frontier challenges into actionable research questions accessible to labs everywhere.
  • Garden Grants: $50K-150K awarded within eight weeks in radical transparency to de-risk bold ideas.
  • Community Infrastructure: Developing resources—open-source software, financial models, and networking hubs—to streamline biotech progress.

These systems create the positive feedback loop: better problems attract stronger talent, bigger wins draw more funding and expertise. As we’ve seen AI and medical biotech, a maturing field shifts from consuming to producing resources (eg, grants and philanthropy), which ensures an enduring and growing impact. Our goal is to mature climate biotech into self-sustainability.

Our focus areas in 2025 are: (1) Pollution: transforming biotech’s role in ubiquitous chemical poisons (2) Geobiotechnology, accelerating practical science efforts for better metal mining

We see grantmaking, roadmapping and internally incubated resources as all part of the same process of fieldbuilding. We host the Climate Biotech Jobs Board, the Climate Biotech Podcast, the Climate Biotech Community and the Problem Statement Repository. Each asset reinforces the others.
