SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION CENTER – ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE

  1. Background and History

The Sustainable Innovation Center (SIC) emerged from a growing recognition that traditional development approaches were not sufficiently addressing the complex, interconnected challenges faced by vulnerable communities—particularly in areas of climate change, poverty, food insecurity, and social inequality. Across Kenya and Africa, innovation hubs such as Kenya Climate Innovation Centre have demonstrated that locally driven, innovation-led solutions can unlock sustainable economic growth while strengthening resilience.

Inspired by this shift, SIC was founded as a community-rooted organization with a clear purpose: to bridge the gap between grassroots realities and innovative, practical solutions. It began as a small initiative working directly with communities—especially women, youth, and schools—to introduce climate-smart practices, sustainable livelihoods, and local innovation ecosystems.

Over time, the organization evolved from simple training interventions into a broader center for sustainable innovation, integrating research, community engagement, and hands-on implementation. Like other emerging innovation ecosystems in Kenya, SIC reflects a wider movement where innovation is not just technological but social, cultural, and community-driven.

  1. Vision, Mission, and Core Values

Help a girl stay in school

I know what period poverty feels like because I lived it. As a young girl, I missed school every month because my family could not afford sanitary pads. I used pieces of old blankets to manage my periods, lived in fear of embarrassment, and was mocked by my peers. Those experiences stole my confidence—but they also gave me a purpose. Today, through the Sustainable Innovation Center, I am helping girls who are facing the same struggle. We currently support more than 200 girls in Grades 5–9 with sanitary pads, menstrual health education, and mentorship so they can stay in school with dignity and confidence. But hundreds more girls are still missing classes simply because they cannot afford a pack of sanitary pads. Your gift can change that. $2.5 can provide one girl with sanitary pads for a month. $10 can help keep one girl in school for an entire school term. $30 can help keep one girl in school for a whole year. Together, we can ensure that no girl misses school because of her period. Join us in turning period poverty into opportunity—one girl, one month, one future at a time
