The Musée Cernuschi (Cernuschi Museum) is an Asian art museum, specializing in works from China, Japan, and Korea, Vietnam, located at 7 avenue Vélasquez, near Parc Monceau, in Paris, France. Its collection in Asian art is second only to the Musée Guimet in Paris. The Cernuschi Museum is one of the 21 City of Paris' Museums that have been incorporated since January 21, 2013 in the public institution Paris Musées. Founded by Henri Cernuschi, an Italian republican banker immigrant, the Cernuschi museum's rich history has collected more than 14 000 Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese art. By coordinating its resources and by taking advantage of its dynamic exhibitions, the museum has established itself as a privileged place to discover Far Eastern cultures, through the artistic exchanges which link China to Japan and Korea to Vietnam, while remaining a reference on Chinese art and archaeology. At a time when the contemporary Asian artistic scenes have become particularly active, the Cernuschi museum offers a creative and contemporary approach to its collections, nourished throughout the interaction of their cultural context. By relying on collections kept in storage, and by widening the acquisition policy to modern forms of expression, it has been possible to offer an itinerary retracing all the steps of the development of cultures, sometimes perceived as being conflicted between the heritage of a rich past and the present modernity. Henri Cernuschi's mansion is a space designed theatrically, in order to recreate the atmosphere of an Asian temple in contrast with the Haussmanian environment where it is located. Even though the museum has kept its capacity to fill its visitors with wonder, it guides them in their visit providing essential keys to the understanding of Asian arts. This mansion from the XIXth century is a museum space on a human scale, which enables the visitors to go through more than five thousand years of Asian art, in just two hours.

THE REBIRTH OF TWO BEAUTIFULLY CARVED DRAGONS

Dear Friends of the Cernuschi museum, We bring to your attention the museum's enterprise regarding THE REBIRTH OF THE TWO BEAUTIFULLY CARVED DRAGONS OF OUR COLLECTION The two golden-eyed dragons are surrounded by clouds and flames in a crimson scenery and decorate two twelve meters long wooden carved panels. Conjuring up the rain, the dragons are meant to bring a good omen to avert fires. The delicacy of the execution, the technical skill of these panels strongly suggest the work of Takeshi Nobuyuki (1751-1824), a famous sculptor of the Edo era highly sought-after by well-informed collectors for his renditions of waves and dragons. This beautiful work, an outstanding witness of Japanese architecture of the Edo era was offered by Mr. Sosthene de Turenne, the first diplomatic representative of France to Japan. Henri Cernuschi chose to place it behind the great Buddha, in the atrium (Kwok room) of the elegant mansion that he built to house the 5000 masterpieces from China and Japan. As you well know, Henri Cernuschi (1821-1896) was a gifted and visionary collector to whom the museum will dedicate a major exhibit in 2023. The cost of this important undertaking has been precisely budgeted at 135 000 USD. In the hope you can bring your support to this precious project, please receive our heartfelt appreciation for your attention. Rene Abate, Chairman Societe des Amis du Musee Cernuschi

CENTENARY OF SOCIETE DES AMIS DU MUSEE CERNUSCHI

Dear Friends, In the wake of a century of acquisitions, the Cernuschi Museumhas a major project with the entry into its collections of an ink painting by Gao Xingjian, Nobel Prize for literature and a key figure in the cultural relationship betweenChina and France. Gao's contributions to literature and visual arts are of the first order in the cultural and artistic circlesthe world over. We have the exceptional opportunity for the American Friends to acquire a masterpiece ,« Dark Moon », for the museum. This work, which combines symbolism as well as abstraction through the tonal richness that ink offers, comes within the long history of Chinese traditional painting. We invite you to join us in this exceptional endeavour which would herald the entry of Gao Xingjian into the contemporary art collection, not only of the Cernuschi Museum but also, for the first time,in a French museum. Nota : As always, your donations will be eligible for tax reductions purposes.
