World Resources Institute

TREES combats hunger, poverty and land degradation by training farmers in sustainable land use.

Around the world, modern and industrialized farming practices are destroying the environment—and, at the same time, failing to provide reliable income and nourishment for the farmers we all depend on to survive. At Trees for the Future (TREES), we recognize that unsustainable land use is the root cause of our most pressing challenges. We confront these challenges by serving the people at the heart of our global food systems: farmers and their families. As a global leader in agroforestry training for over 30 years, TREES provides hands-on, immersive education, skill building, and support, encouraging farmers to work with nature, not against it. 

Our signature methodology, the Forest Garden Approach, helps farmers transform their land with thousands of fast-growing, ecologically appropriate trees and dozens of other crops, creating new possibilities for themselves and their communities. By embracing sustainable land practices, farmers are reclaiming their agency, breaking the cycles of climate change and generational poverty, and rebuilding our food systems from the ground up.

Trees for the Future

To cultivate creativity and grow mutual empathy as the building blocks for a more peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future.

The arts can cultivate students' creativity, a survival skill in this Artificial Intelligence age, and can grow mutual empathy, essential for a "more perfect union." 

We employ the power of the arts for a dual intervention. Firstly, students' creative development through our school art program, the Arts Olympiad, followed by their empathic development at the World Children's Festival on the National Mall across the U.S. Capitol. 

The Arts Olympiad 
Objective: To transform children's self-identity through the arts for higher-order thinking and enhanced self-worth that teaches students to foster their creativity and engage in physical activity to counter the epidemic of declining creativity and rising obesity. 

The Arts Olympiad introduces students to the "Artist-Athlete Ideal" of the creative mind and a healthy body (mente sana in corpo sano). The structured lesson plans motivate students to think of themselves and others not as techies, nerds, jocks, or artsy but as artist-athletes. The coalescing of artistic and athletic mindsets sprouts outside-the-box thinking and instills healthy lifestyles. 

The Arts Olympiad requires students to visualize and depict themselves as artist-athletes in their paintings, drawings, or digital art, which solidifies their revised self-image as artist-athletes. When the number of artist-athletes grows, the school becomes a more creative, healthy, and forward-looking community.

The World Children's Festival
Objective: To develop mutual empathy with three days of workshops, activities, and training at the National Mall across the U.S. Capitol.

The Arts Olympiad winners from the participating U.S. school districts and countries convene at their World Children's Festival (WCF) to celebrate Creativity, Diversity, and Unity.  

The WCF workshops, training, and activities are designed to provide a transformative experience that infuses children's creativity with empathy, inspiring them to become "creative-empaths" who can work together to make the world a better place.

To be a creative-empath requires a quality of character that can help overcome adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and disrupt the intergenerational transmission of trauma and hatred that seeps into the young, like physical traits or melanin. The WCF is not only fun and entertainment but an effective intervention that makes it unlike any other children's festival, nationally or globally.

ChildArt Magazine
Objective: Creative and empathic development of young readers.

Published ad-free since 1998, ChildArt is a unique magazine that focuses on a single theme for each issue. Recent themes include Creativity, Human Security, Young Leaders, The Moral of Your Story, The Power of Words, Mindfulness, and Metaverse.

ICAF's Impact
Over the past twenty-five years, ICAF has changed the world for children. More than five million schoolchildren have participated in and benefited from ICAF's free-of-charge programs. An estimated two million students, parents, and teachers have attended ICAF festivals, exhibitions, and conferences in over twenty major cities worldwide. ChildArt quarterly’s readership has grown to about 220,000. 

Funding
The National Endowment of the Art, the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the Skillman Foundation, and the Robert J. Bauer Family Foundation supported ICAF in 2022. ICAF is independently ranked among the 25 Top Children's Charities in the United States. The U.S. Olympic Committee has granted ICAF an exclusive license to use the "Arts Olympiad" mark. 

ICAF is raising funds to launch its 7th Arts Olympiad in June 2023 and produce the 7th WCF in June 2024.

International Child Art Foundation

Pushing philanthropy to fulfill its moral and practical duty to build, share, and wield power and resources in pursuit of justice.

NCRP promotes philanthropy that serves the public good, is responsive to people and communities with the least wealth and opportunity, and is held accountable to the highest standards of integrity and openness. We envision philanthropy at its best investing in people and communities with the least wealth, power, and opportunity and in the movements and nonprofit organizations that engage, serve, and represent them. 

We work with foundations, nonprofits, and social justice movements to advocate for moving more and better resources to frontline organizations fighting for migrant justice, Black lives and liberation, reproductive access, gender justice, climate justice, democracy, and more. Individuals and institutions involved in grantmaking use NCRP’s resources and insight to inform their own practices and advocate and organize with other funders to change practices sector-wide. Nonprofits working for social justice, particularly NCRP member organizations, use NCRP’s work to better understand the philanthropic landscape and to feel empowered to advocate for their movements to funders individually and collectively.

The Sunrise Movement is a youth movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process. We’re building an army of young people to make climate change an urgent priority across America, end the corrupting influence of fossil fuel executives on our politics, and elect leaders who stand up for the health and wellbeing of all people.

We call ourselves Sunrise because we know this dark hour in America, when fossil fuel executives and climate deniers run our government, cannot last. The sun will rise again.  We have a 4-year plan to make climate action an urgent priority in every corner of the country, expose the fossil fuel executives who have purchased politicians and blocked progress, and lift up champions who will work for the people at every level of government.

The Institute for Local Self-Reliance has a vision of thriving, diverse, equitable communities. To reach this vision, we build local power to fight corporate control. We are a national research and advocacy organization that partners with allies across the country to build an American economy driven by local priorities and accountable to people and the planet.

Local self-reliance means that people are able to exercise power over our lives: how we provide for our families, how resources are shared and allocated in our communities, and how decisions made by government, corporations and business affect all of us. 

We recognize the biggest challenges in the U.S. today are corporate control and diminishing community power which undermines the strength of our democracy and local economies. For us, local self-reliance is the best answer to these challenges. 

So whether it’s fighting back against the outsize power of monopolies like Amazon, ensuring high-quality locally-driven broadband service for all, or advocating to keep local renewable energy in the community that produced it, ILSR advocates for solutions that harness the power of citizens and communities.   

WHAT WE DO

We believe that democracy can only thrive when economic and political power is widely dispersed. ILSR works to achieve this vision through five key initiatives that center local communities, giving citizens the authority, capacity, and responsibility to exercise power over their lives:  

Our Energy Democracy Initiative empowers households and communities to produce their own local, clean, and renewable energy and oppose the excessive power of monopoly utilities.

The Community Broadband Networks Initiative promotes locally rooted, democratically accountable broadband networks that provide fast, affordable and reliable Internet access to all Americans.

Our Independent Business Initiative champions locally owned businesses, leads efforts to fight the unchecked power of corporate giants like Walmart and Amazon, and seeks to reverse the government policies that work against these small, independent businesses.

Our Waste to Wealth Program focuses on moving toward a zero-waste economy, exposing corporate control of the waste sector, and supporting local community efforts to shut down garbage incinerators. 

Our Composting for Community Initiative is advancing local composting to create jobs, enhance soils, protect the climate, and reduce waste through advocacy, training, research, demonstration sites, and coalition building.

HOW WE DO IT

Fighting Corporate Control: Across all of our initiatives, we’re fighting unfettered corporate control in all its forms, from giant tech platforms to monopoly utilities, Wall Street banks to garbage incinerators. We show how public policy currently favors bigness and perpetuates inequality, and we identify, develop, and promote policies at the local, state, and federal levels that help build healthy, sustainable communities.

Building Local Power: We provide community members with the research and advocacy tools they need to reclaim power over local decision making and hold corporations and government accountable. We direct our efforts to support the people most impacted when democracy is threatened, especially rural residents, diverse communities, and economically disadvantaged Americans.

Partnering With Others: For all of our existence, ILSR has been building coalitions and working closely with allies, from entrepreneurs to city planners, retail workers to engineers, neighborhood groups to national advocacy organizations, as well as communities of color, low-income communities, and other people pushed to the margins of the existing economic and political structure. With our partners we conduct research, run workshops, produce podcasts, and create popular education tools that support local campaigns.

Muflehun is a resource center that designs contextualized solutions to complex social challenges.

Muflehun is an independent non-profit founded in 2010. We are at the nexus of society, security and technology, and serve as a resource center for preventing and countering hate, extremism, and violence, and for building resilience. Our mission is to facilitate a world with justice for all by cultivating prosperity.

Muflehun works with stakeholders to design contextualized solutions to complex social challenges aimed at increasing social resilience. We conduct research and analysis of current violent extremism challenges, identifying root causes and developing relevant solutions; applying the learnings from research to pilot programs to counter the threats faced by society; sharing lessons with partner organizations and providing support in their capacity building for adapting and delivering localized versions of the programs; and regularly providing analyses and learning to policy makers for improved macro level decisions.
